You can choose to not shake hands if you want, but if a ref is there he could code you as you mentioned. It would usually take a few codes before anything officially is done to you. They might send you a letter saying your on probation, and if you get another code of something unsportsmanlike, then you would be suspended from all league play for 6 months. Or they send you a bill/fine for each code in the amount of 100 bucks

so like I know Lots of guys that don't wash their hands after they go to the bathroom,,,even after #2,,,,so I am really afraid of these men.

Been hanging out at the loos a lot lately, huh? Maybe you could spray some Purell on their hands before shaking.
I have no hands so you will have to shake my foot. Let me remove my shoes and socks. I dont want to be rude.
Please have the official read the Friend at Court and point out where shaking hands is required or it is a Code Violation. Poor Sportmanship, sure but unless there is some chattering and name calling at the end of the match, can not force a player to shake hands, especially if it was contentious.

I will always shake hands but i dont need to talk to you if you cheated your way to win. Some people are complete cheats, i will shake your hand at the end of the match but dont expect me to small talk.
Most matches arent like this but some people are just pathetic. i love a competitive match but i dont like some of the players or team tactics in league matches. Some people or teams are gaming...we all expect to lose some calls per match but holy crap, i saw some bs at sectionals.

I agree, but it must be done ONLY when both parties are on the same pageYup. Fist bump is a lot more sanitary

I usually prefer to fist bump, depends on the person but you don't know where their hands have been!

Why don't we just kiss each other like the French men do ? that is probably better sanitary and form more close bonds among players , I think.

Generally speaking, if the person looks healthy, survived the rigors of a tennis match and doesn't have any open festering sores, I feel safe shaking hands--if they're creeps, I'll do the minimum knuckle thing.

The hand shake used to worded as a concession of the match, He who offers his hand out first is the winner of the match when the other player accepts and his hand is second to be offered and a handshake done, this rule hit the fans when a few pros put there hand out first over the net, got the handshake and walked off the court, match over-I win, 2nd to offer his hand lost the match.
Now the handshake is sportsmanship thing-thus code violation if someone is enforcing it, If you don't remember this I cant help you with that.

just suspension points that could add up in the end, especially for a consistent offender, also believe USTA has ramped up suspension points if it happens after match.

wow. So much unfounded worry about hygeine in this thread. As if your germs are suddenly more sanitary than someone elses. If you are concerned about infectious spread of bacteria and viruses, just wash your hands after the handshake and before you put them in your mouth or rub over and open wound.
There are about a billion ways to catch an illness and tennis handshakes have to be at near the bottom.
As for the OP, always shake hands and don't worry about it. Tennis and golf are gentleman's sports. Act like it and respect your opponent with a handshake at the end of the match/round.

Though I think the punishment is apropos,I think it is equally important to allow the players to enjoy the game without such childish exploits, if only for a while.
because people..pick their nose..use the restroom...eat..grab public hand rails...and then play on their touch screen smart phones....then someone calls and you hold all that up to your face.
not to mention you wash your hands daily....how often do you wash your phone?
studies on cell phones showed them as 18x dirtier than a public toilet
and hand shakes bother you?

Look, goods sports shake hands, better, approach the net after you are beaten, hand extended to congratulate your opponent. This is in the letter and the spirit of the rules, and longstanding tradition.

So by that logic, in order to make something better, we should not try at all because there are lots of other things that need fixing?
What?...I was pointing out germs are part of our daily lives and it's hardly an excuse not to shake hands.
I suppose you use that excuse not to wash your hands after urination if no one is looking? And it is only your germs too, so unlikely to harm you.
I was at a doctor's office the other day and they had a hand-reader for ID. I was given a sanitizer after using it. Since germs are everywhere, why are they doing that? And a handshake is more dangerous than someone having placed his hands on the reader 5 minutes before, because in 5 minutes many germs will be dead once outside the body.
