Wilander just said so on Eurosport.

Obviously he's biased, but I don't think he's far from the truth...

Not far at all, no matter what level Nadal was playing, Soderling wasn't going to lose that day in my opinion.

just look at how he played in the 1st 2rounds this years tournament. when i saw him play i said to myself no one will beat him this tournament. i saw complete dominance in the first 2 rounds, it was really a high level of tennis

I should specify: he was talking about the Federer match.

I don't know how this applies to this arguement, but I'll go with it. Are you watching his match with Almagro right now? If you were/are, I wouldn't be posting this statement.

It was an unbelievable performance....I don't think anyone could have beaten him with that form.

Reminds me a bit of Safin's performance when he destroyed Sampras at the US Open...just jaw dropping stuff.

Of course, the latter occurred in a GS final and we will need to see if Sods can make it to the final and, if so, raise his game to that level again.

It was certainly impressive but the best, who knows? I've read about Lew Hoad, who was super strong, hitting outright winners without his opponent touching the ball except on serve for long periods of time. It's certainly up there.

was it Kramer who said that Hoad's peak was the highest?

Not so fast. Still Soderling is only a dangerman, not a real winner. There were some really great performances of clay in modern times, like the Nadal final win at RG in 2008, or Kuertens wins over Ferrero. Kuerten was called Picasso by Kafelnikov. Fedrer is a step slower now, than a couple of years ago. You could note that in his USO match with Delpo, now again. Earlier in his career, Federer with a better movement and anticipation, was able to handle the power of a big man and turn it against the aggressor.

nobody talked about "winner" or "champion" etc..we're talking about this single performance.

I agree. He was ridiculous.

I was like: "OH COME ONE, how many times can you hit that??..he was like a machine"

Gotta love it.

I'm surprised Wilander was even able to express himself clearly with Federer's balls in his mouth.

I came home from work and saw Soderling leading 2-1 in sets and thought.. WTF?!
I didn´t see the whole match just the last set and the highlights..
But wat I´ve seen was enough to say it was a ridiculous preformance..
This guy can really hit the crap out of a ball..

*******s would like to believe that someone who defeats Fed is great. Watch how that guy will perform against a fit Nadal and the illusions will fade away.

Stop with the qualifying baloney. Nadal looked fine physically vs Soderling last year and looked fine whipping Hewitt the previous rd. He got wiped, deal with it.

Yeah yeah keep believing it.

Fact is Fed was lucky that Nadal was injured last year. I would say that is the singlemost lucky event in his life.

Best clay performance was Nadal in 2008. Even throughout the tournament he was on a whole new level to anyone else. Federer had to play good tennis to win just 4 games.

No, Federer was lucky Nadal was given a beat down by Soderling or you're right he never would have won it.

Nope. It was awesome performance by Soderling, no doubt. One of the best performances ever, but not the best clay performance.

Best clay performance would be that person playing the perfect game while utilizing the properties of a clay court to perfection.

Best example: Borg '78 (as above) and in recent memory Nadal FO 2008.

Nadal FO 2008.

Almost like an opponent wasn't there, or it was a practice session.

Soderling's match against Fed was a great performance, but we've seen matches like that time and time again.

because an opponent wasn't there. at least mentally.

it was federer's worst match in history.

on the other hand, against Soderling, he was playing damn good...

I disagree. Nadal was just playing the best match of his life and Federer was trying. There was just nothing he could do about it.

Agree. That was his best performance in a long time.

Best performances in clay history, whether in the whole tournament or individual matches belong to Nadal and Borg. I don't have to say which year cause CC fans know them by now.

About RG 08' final: Fed simply implemented bad tactics, that's all and lost heart after a set and a half. He actually S&V'ed on some points and tried to attack all the time instead of waiting for the right time to strike. The result: a passing shot marathon by Nadal. This would have been bad tactics against a 2005 Rafa, who was way more one-dimensional,but it was suicidal against peak Rafa in 08'. Hence the very definitive scoreline.

I don't think it is meaningful to talk about "best peak levels". This is just nonsense that people use to attempt to elevate lower ranked players (either in the rankings or in history) above better players.

That said, Soderling has played exceptionally well.

I hope he gets to the finals and beats Nadal -- who has been handed a joke draw, btw, where are the *******s complaining? Conspiracy. ;-)

See, the funny thing is, they refuse to admit that Soderling playing well is a bad matchup for Nadal. Nadal's best weapon -- his top-class topspin -- is neutralized. They refuse to admit that Soderling actually played outstanding tennis last year, and want to knock it all down to Nadal's injuries. Nadal seemed fine vs. Hewitt the prior round, and while I would readily agree that as Nadal is either the best or 2nd-best ever on clay, his peak level would be too much for anyone there, Nadal didn't play horribly vs. Soderling last year. Soderling just played great.

But if Nadal wins the FO, using the same logic that Nadal-****s have used to discredit Federer, I guess it isn't that big of an accomplishment. We should put an asterisk next to it. After all, he had a joke draw (look at his SF opponent, who?), and Soderling isn't that good of a player.

Maybe,or maybe illusions that a healthy Nadal crushes Soderling will fade away instead, maybe we'll find out.

Are you kidding me? So Nadal beat federer 2 years ago 6-1 6-3 6-0 and Soderling beating federer in 4 tight sets is a better performance? How come?. Oh yes, you would say that federer is playing way better this year, which is untrue. He might be playing a bit better, but the conditions helped Soderling a lot. Don´t get me wrong, Sod played incredibly, but the conditions made his bombing style more effective. It was a serve festival, not the best performance on clay ever. That´s disrespectful towards Kuerten and Nadal

ha ha ha ha ha ha !!!!!!!!!!!!!

seriously, fed played CR*P in FO 2008 F ( nadal played BRILLIANT, no doubt ) , he played pretty well against sod ...no comparision whatsoever, the difference in performance level should be expressed in light years !
