Synthetic under $10 Recommendation?

I've been using a Solinco Tour Bite 17g/Gosen OG Sheep Micro Super 16L hybrid for years upon years now. Unfortunately I've started experience some pain in my upper arm (tricep) region that the doctor says isn't related to my muscles...maybe some arthritis.

I'm looking for your recommendation for a quality synthetic string that's under $10 a set and offers nice feel, good spin, and decent durability (and available at T-W of course).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Buy 2 or more reels of PPC for $90/reel that's about $5 or a string job while it's on sale. It won't stay at that price though. $5 for a multi is a great price point IMO.

I've had good luck with Tourna Syn Gut Armor - $3.29/set on TW, it is also sold in reels. I use the 17g personally, and someone I string for has gone through a few reels of the 16g (he switched to it after developing pain). I use it primarily as a full bed, but have had reasonable success with it as a cross. I'm using a dense pattern (radical) and get good life out of it, I'd say the friend probably rotates one every 3 weeks - but he plays a very open string pattern and at least 3 evenings per week.

Of the three points you picked, I'd say comfort is the highest, spin is second, durability is third.

Great to hear...one last question...if I'm used to my poly/syn hybrid at 46/49, what tension would be a good starting point for the PPC?

Have you thought about Head Rip Control. As a poly user it's the closest feeling dead-ish but still controlled and spin friendly string I have been able to use.

Actually the RIP Control is one of the few non-poly strings I have tried. I tried the 1.25mm several years ago and maybe it was the racquet I had it in (it was either POG Mid or a BLX Pro Open) but it lasted all of about 6 sets. Has durability been an issue for this string or did I just have a bum set or too open of string pattern for it?

And I do agree with the Prince Premier Control by the way. Nice playing multi with good durability. It's what I would choose if moving to a multi from my hybrid setup. As far as tension, I'll leave that to the others, but with PPC, personally I wouldn't raise it as much as you'd might think.

Is it gut>multi>synthetic>poly?

I've heard mixed things about level of power for multi and synthetic. Which is more power? I know natural gut is most powerful and poly is the lowest. Thanks to everybody and sorry to the OP for leeching onto this thread. Regards

I string my own rigs at home and I've had an enduring love affair with 17 ga. syn. gut for a number of years. I know that this stuff doesn't necessarily check off the durability box, but I don't blow through it too quickly and it just delivers for me. It gives me some inherent softness, really good touch and feel, perfectly acceptable spin, yaddah-yaddah... and it's crazy affordable in reels. Lately I've been buying Kirschbaum's standard syn. gut from TW at about $35/reel.

Not the most exotic stuff around, but every time I sample other string, it always feels like home when I get back to a fresh setup of this string. Feel is a very subjective issue, but this string really works for me. Even if someone else is stringing your racquets, you can minimize your string cost with this syn. gut and really only pay for the labor of installation.

You don't have a big tension differential. If you are accutomed to stringing non-hybrids with the same mains/crosses tension, then 48-50 pounds. This is also a good starting point if you like to increase/decrease the cross tension by a couple of pounds. I don't know what your hybrid feels like, so best that you make the judgement call based on your experience with the feel. You know what you are looking for.

I'm assuming you're still using strikes in which the tighter pattern for the 16x19 will be more favorable to strings than the POG or pro open. It lasted well for me but it was in an 18x20 prestige classic.

I just bought a reel of Prince Premiere Control (PPC) 15g to help me play through some tennis elbow. I think the 15g price was $70 per reel. Even in my 16x16 pattern, I can get about 8 sets of singles in before the string breaks.

My friend has been using the 15g PPC for years. Right after I bought a reel of white PPC, he told me that the black is more durable. Ugh!

In a 98 sq dunlop
Here's a nice cheap combo that worked well
Forten sweet 17 mains
Wilson nylon 15L crosses
String mains higher then crosses by 2lbs
Mid to upper range of your racquet specs.
Hit for 1 hour and played 2 sets of doubles
Strings hardly moved and the wilson nylon was 15 years old, taken from a cheap racquet I found in the basement.

I liked Gosen OG Micro string too especially in the Crystal and Amber color. Wouldn't you know they discontinued both.

I ended up giving Prince Premier Control 1.30 a shot to begin with. I have plenty of Gosen (both 17g and Micro Super 16L) on hand so I may end up trying those strings in my TFight 295 Dynacore as well.

Ordered three the racquets and had them strung as follows:
- Prince Premier Control 1.30 full bed
- Solinco Hyper G 1.20/Gosen OG Sheep Micro Super 1.25
- Wilson Revolve 1.25 (although it was supposed to be Solinco Revolution)/Gosen OG Sheep Micro Super 1.25

I ordered a second set of the Prince Premier Control 1.30 so I could try it in a hybrid if the full bed doesn't work out. Got a little carried away on my order, splurged and ordered a set of Klip Legend in order to compared it to the Prince Premier Control 1.30. Ordered both Wilson Revolve 1.25 and MSV CoFocus 1.18 to try in a hybrid with the gut and premier.

If these don't work out I'm definitely going to try some of the other strings you mentioned!

String Tension is a very important success/failure factor..

In testing different strings, tension plays a very important role in determining whether you would like a string or not.

1. I string my racket
2. I play with it for a few hours.
3. If I don't like it, I re-tension.

Some strings I don't like at any tension.
Some strings I like at a specific tension.

Why in the hell would I want to go buy from Amazon when I can buy Prince Synthetic Gut W/Duraflex from Tennis Warehouse for $4.75 / set? Or if I wanted a reel I could get it for $70 / reel from Tennis Warehouse.

EDIT: Assuming I can get 18 jobs from a reel that's under $4/job. Does Amazon have a better Tennis forum they have to subsidize by charging more?

I second that statement. OGSM is a great overall string. Players try to hybrid strings, but OGSM plays like a hybrid of poly/multi.

I was using Gosen OG Sheep Micro 17 for a long time and recently switched to Prince Premier Control(PPC) 16 after trying several multis like addiction, fxp, power fiber. There is no looking back even though I have almost full reel of OGSM in reserve. PPC is the total package and I have never fallen in love this much with any other string before. I use it in the crosses with Cyclone, sometimes I use it as a mains with smooth poly cross. Works great on all those setups. I have stocked up by purchasing a couple of reels of PPC 16 and I am set for the next few years. I believe it's $90 if you buy 2 or more in TW - comes down to under $6 per string job.
