The Luxurious Locamotive Lefty from Luxemborg Let Loose in London - The 'Other' Gilles

Always liked Mueller. Watched him from courtside *almost* beat Sock at IW a couple years ago. The crowd was going nuts for Sock, I was yelling 'Allez Gilles!'

Big, quiet, goofy, not too athletic looking but plays a nice old school grass court game. Also had a great comeback from injury and the minor leagues a couple years ago when everyone had written him off. He's having a nice little twighlight run in his career.

Great comeback 0-2 against Santiago 'Hitman' Giraldo today.

Keep it going Gilles!

Muller's serve is little noted but he has one of the two or three highest number of aces per match so far in 2016.
Given his game its amazing Muller has not had more success on grass. Giraldo should have been beaten in straight sets.

"Mulles" is fun. I liked how he played against Novak in RG last year, was nice to see live. He suffers a bit from an underwhelming forehand, similar to Lopez and other lefties.

Gilles forever the bridesmaid with his 5th runner up in 5 tries yesterday. He's near his career best ranking and is having a solid year however. Allez Gilles!

After the Newport defeat, I said that I thought Muller would likely never end up winning a tour title. I still think there's a good chance of that, although I'm keen to see how he gets on in D.C. this week. It's a tough field for him, so I doubt he'll win it, but perhaps he can make a run.

That said, given that the semi-finals of Kitzbuhel are G. Melzer v Lorenzi and Basilashvili v Lajovic, it's clearly a question of getting the right break at some point!

Or picking the right tourney! ;)

Or picking the right tourney! ;)

Too bad for him there aren't ever three grass-court tournaments at once...

(The draws are at their weakest right now because they are having to stack many tournaments in at once this summer because they want three of the seven weeks between Wimbledon and the US Open to be reserved for Canada, Cincinnati, and the Olympics. There's one other event in those three weeks combined. So, there are only four free weeks in which to fit in at least five weeks' worth of tournaments. Perhaps if Muller is still around in 2020, he'll have the foresight to enter one of the weak draws then).

Nice to see Gilles on TV. So refreshing to see someone hitting approach shots and following with good volleys. Wish other pros would play like this. Great win to make the semi's of a tough draw tournament.

Allez Gilles!
Broke to stay in the match in the third, a rarity in his game but something that finally bit Delbonis on his arse. A shame Betankis couldn't FINNISH the job 2R.

Gilles through to the final of Sydney with a good chance to take it against a fellow title-less veteran Dan Evans.

So nice to see a net player having success. If only the top 2 would take some net rushing lessons from Gilles, tennis would be so much more fun to watch.

Muller’s First Title ‘Like A Movie’
33 year old captures his first ATP World Tour crow

The wait was worth it for Gilles Muller. Thirteen years after he played in his first ATP World Tour final, the left-hander won his first ATP World Tour title on Saturday, beating Brit Daniel Evans 7-6(5), 6-2 at the Apia International Sydney.

The Luxembourg native had been 0-5 in ATP World Tour finals, including two in 2016. The title will propel him to inside the Top 30 of the Emirates ATP Rankings for the first time in his career. Muller, currently No. 34, is projected to climb to No. 28 when the new rankings are released on Monday.

As if it could get any better, Muller was presented with the trophy on court by all-time great Rod Laver. “I wasn't expecting that. It was a great honour. Just unbelievable. Everything that happened tonight was like in a movie. Rod Laver there, standing on centre court with the trophy, my kids in the stands, can't ask for more,” Muller said.

Before Saturday, he had been the highest-ranked player in the Top 50 of the Emirates ATP Rankings without a singles title. He broke down in tears during the trophy presentation when he paid tribute to his wife, Alessia, and sons Lenny (5) and Nils (4).

“It means a lot. Like you can see, I was pretty emotional out there on the court,” Muller said. “For the past two or three years, it was probably my biggest goal to win a title. I always dreamed of that, and I was so close last year... So I was very scared and worried that I was going to be one of those players who never win a title. Now I have it, and it just feels great.”

Muller, as he has all tournament long, served his way to the win. He hit 12 aces to finish with 81 for the week, a tournament best. He claimed 75 per cent of his service points in the final, including almost 90 per cent of the points that started with his first serve (33/37).

The 6'4” left-hander also erased the only break point he faced against Evans. For the week, Muller dropped his serve only three times (57/60). “I couldn't get anywhere near his serve,” said Evans, who was playing in his first ATP World Tour final. “I said yesterday he's got a great serve. He showed it today.”

Muller acknowledged that his serve was crucial on Saturday, but he said staying calm in the sometimes windy conditions was even more important for him. He had been oh so close to winning his first ATP World Tour title in the past. Last July, Muller had three championship points against Croatian Ivo Karlovic in the Newport final.

“The most important thing was not to let the frustration come up too much and just focus on what I had to do. I think I did pretty good,” Muller said.

Muller will receive 250 Emirates ATP Rankings Points and $77,980 for winning the title. Evans will receive 150 Emirates ATP Rankings points and $41,070. The Brit is expected to rise 16 spots to a new career high of No. 51 in the Emirates ATP Rankings.

“There's so many good players... It's always tough,” Evans said of winning a title. “I hope it takes me six years if I get one. I'd sign for it taking that many times if I got one. He got [a title] in the end, and good for him. It was his day today.

Well today I had the pleasure of watching Gilles dominate the doubles court and take our beloved Juan Martin to the shed. Querry served like a beast but Gilles showed a lot of variety and skill. JM was having fun and Paes...well let's just say maybe JM didn't want to go deep in the dubs draw so he picked Paes lol.

Even the enormous fh couldn't catch up with this ace.

Gilles celebrated his 34th birthday today by beating fellow oldster Tommy Haas in straight sets. Hoping Gilles can gain some more points on the dirt so he will be seeded higher for the grass season.

It's an alliteration (albeit a bad one lol)!

Anyway, Gilles shows the young dog what grass court tennis is and advances to the title match.

Allez Gilles!

Indeed congrats to Muller blnt Dr Ivo,,

" The match between the 38-year-old Karlovic and 34-year-old Muller was the oldest singles final on the ATP World Tour since Hong Kong in 1976, when 42-year-old Ken Rosewall defeated 30-year-old Ilie Nastase. Muller (34 years, one month) is the second-oldest winner in the tournament’s history, right behind 2016 winner Nicolas Mahut (34 years, five months).

There were no break points in today’s final, with Muller surprisingly out-acing Karlovic (22 to 19). The fourth seed grabbed an early mini-break and the first-set tie-break and rode it to an early advantage. Karlovic led 4/3 in the second-set tie-break, but Muller won the final four points to prevail in one hour and 32 minutes."

Gilles looked good in his return from injury beating Millman in straights. Had that sweet serve and volley working and the groundies looked pretty good too. Hope it's a harbinger of good things in 2018

Gilles is having a rough start to 2018 but I try and watch him in IW each year. Caught a great match with him and Sam beating Murray/Soares in a match tiebreak the other day. Gilles wasn't playing great but fortunately Sam was bringing the heat with serve/forehand and they won the big points. Maybe Gilles can take the doubles title!

Allez Gilles!
