The Shape Of Things To Come: Denis Shapovalov!

If Denis manages to beat Simon (it will be tough, Gilles is a bad matchup for Shapo and will be even worse than Carreno Busta in Vienna), I think he will reach the 1/8 with a chance to go in 1/4.

Someone pointed out that Shapo is only the second Canadian (Raonic the first) to win a ATP title in men's singles in the open era. That I never knew.

I was surprised too. I thought that Nestor won a few but I guess he didn't. He was primarily a doubles specialist, and won pretty much everything he could in that area. Recently retired at 48!

Yeah, Nestor was incredible. I remember near the end of his career, the stat was that every single tournament he entered he had won at least once in his career. So all 4 GS, all 9 Masters, and every 250 or 500 (excluding ones that he'd *never* entered).

Not sure how that accounts for tournaments changing names and locations, but still, was a fun stat.

An amazing athlete, and a wonderful ambassador for the sport. Still a young man and I wish him all the best with his next journey.

Hopefully they're right. I've never thought Elo represented tennis skill very well so I don't find that persuasive, but it agrees with all the other metrics here so hopefully they're all correct about who's better.

At the Roger's Cup last year Fognini said to Shapo after being beat "You're so arrogant". I wonder if there's still bad blood between the two.

I watched the few games that Shapo played today and he was setting things up well but then going wild. Seems he isn't quite used to the court speed. He has a good chance here if he can keep his form for a SF.

To date, he's defeated Nadal, Tsitsipas and Medvedev (not this year as they didn't play). So, this would be his fourth win. H2H he's 2-1 against Medvedev.

Some backhanded praise from Fabio, if you will permit me the pun: (google translated)

"
"Unfortunately his service made the difference, given that for a good set I just couldn't answer. I made three unusual backhand mistakes that cost me the game at the end, that's why I got so angry.

I have to give him credit because his performance has gone up a lot, although I don't really like the style of play of the Next Gens. They have a tennis that is too fast, very based on service and straight, so for a rhythm player like me it gets harder ” - Fabio explained to our microphones.

Oh, ST, I'm sorry. I thought you were referring to Denis. He's blond, but doesn't Zverev have brown hair? You must be referring to all his gold! Alas, my senior brain isn't functioning well in this moment. Just looked at betting predictions. Not one is betting on Denis. Also, I don't know if he's even taken a set off Zverev in their previous matches. Believe me, I would love to see Denis win. But, he has a few players with whom there seems to be a mental block: Struff, Carreno-Busta and Zverev. He has defeated the first two once, but lost in their last two matches with each other. Sometimes a player gets in your head like Medvedev with Tsitsipas.

Fognini says that to players and umpires alike. It's like his go to tirade in English, "you're so arrogant" lol... Though I do remember he doesn't like the idea of this next gen sort of thing and gave an interview a while back...

Wow! What an eventful fall indoor season...a first title, a week at the WATLYNM and now at least a QF at P-ercy thanks to a top 10 scalp of Goldilocks Zedraffe.

Shapo has also matched his career high #20 in the live rankings and needs just the QF win to become Canadian lead dog on the Great White North sled.

Bravo!!!

A thrilling final game as Shapo beats Alexander Zverev to reach the quarter-finals of the Paris Bercy tournament. Two breaks and 5-2 ahead in the third set the Canadian saved three break points in a 14-point game to achieve a well-deserved victory by 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.

Shapo wins the doubles too! Pretty good. A long way off but when was the last time anyone has won both a doubles and a singles at a Masters?

I was at the match today and put all my heart (and voice) for Denis. I have many videos, does anyone know how I can put them here from my phone ?
