The Tennis "Privileged sport" irony

For decades, tennis was considered a sport for upper class people because of the necessary extended learning curve to be a top player.

It all changed with Connors in the seventies, and the rest is history.

Nowadays, top players are creating tennis academies for rich people to enroll their children at a very young age.

The only problem is these rich people don't realise the sport they are pushing their offspring into provides very little monetary rewards to the lesser ranked players, which barely survive day to day.

Unless you manage to be part of the top 50, you're basically playing for free, as tennis doesn't redistribute 50% of the revenues to the players like in other sports, but just around 15%. You don't even have a pension to fall back on after your career is over.
