The USTA wants self rates by whatever means necessary

Wonder what it would be like to draft teams in league? All players who list as 3.5 or whatever by a certain date are placed into a pool...each listed captain then picks from the pool in some order that may distribute the talent equally. I think this takes away from those teams who intentionally stack their teams with recruited sandbaggers.

I know part of creating a team is the social, friendship aspect but I don't think there is particular loyalty to any team when recruiting comes around and players move from team to team.

Just a thought. I haven't played league all that long, but have noticed that there are teams built to make the playoffs which make for an imbalance in the divisional league.

We had a league in North Florida that was a draft league with trades and all. It was cool, but I haven't heard if it is going to be happening again. Folks liked it...

Just out of curiosity- how does the USTA make money off of nationals? I don't think that teams pay a fee to participate.

The fee for state is $250 per team and then $20 per person. Our local league is kind enough to pay the fees for all teams that advance to state. That is very nice of them to do and teams are appreciative.

Give we have very low fees of just $12 per league per person, our local players are getting a great deal with the low $12 per league fee.

Tales from sectionals

Have played the first 2 matches of sectionals today. In our two matches my partner and i played 4 self rated players with their average age ... 18

Of the 4 players 1 was clearly out of level .... 1 one is probalbly a 4.5 but It is not embarrassing and the other two were legitimate top tier 4.0s

We ended up splitting matches but both went to match tie breaks.

What is interesting to note is that one of the teams that won their local league and should have gone to sectionals had nearly half their team dq'd. So the local league ended up sending the 2nd place team ... Also with 5 self rates.

There are rumors that several players are near dqing .... But that rumor circulates very year

Sectionals day 2

Split matches again today. Finally played someone who is old enough to vote .... Almost kidding

I would conservatively say that out of 25 self rated players that could have been here, 3 are definately 4.5s and another 2 certainly could be. The others are appropriately placed.

There was one player dq'd today which was definately appropriate. He won his 1st two matches 1 and 0 and the played dubs. In the third match he played with a buddy of mine and I asked him If he was there to drop games and keep him from striking out ... His response was "was it that Obvious "..... I pointed out he was cheating and he walked away.

There were two interesting rules questions that came up which I will put in an another thread.

LOL. I know exactly who that is. He beat Corey in the Cryan last year 1 & 1, and Corey clearly should have been bumped last year (he was in your boat of up at early start and back down at year end...). There's going to be a bunch of those college kids that went to high school together around here a couple years ago that are going to make up one hell of a 4.5 team next year if they all play USTA.

I had to laugh .. that team captain shamelessly cheats and gets players out of level and tells them to throw games ... anyway he ended up going 0-5 after having two of his top players DQ'd. We beat his team 3-2 in the first match with those players but once they got disqualified we ended up with the 5-0 win. That little victory made me smile.

The team that won it was better than us. And even though they have a couple self rates who are probably not legit ... after our injuries, they likely still would have beaten us without those players. They are just much deeper than we were. At least the kids I played were pleasant and not on court cheaters ...

Actually he was not an early start bump up ... we were surprised by that.

Yeah, all those Chinese guys they have playing doubles are B-rated and, like you guys, just getting better year after year. They have a couple self rates, but the core of the team is not.
