There have been 45 matches on the WTA this year to go at least 3 hours

Came across this article, was surprised that there have been that many 3 hour matches this year. The longest match was 3:51, Haddad Maia d Sorribes Tormo at RG. Hadad Maia also was involved in the 2nd longest match of the year, and the 7th longest.

Samosonova has been involved in five 3 hour matches, more than any other player.

9 matches were from Grand Slams - 5 from RG, 2 from Wimbledon, 2 from Australian Open

I also noticed a qualifying match in Palermo on Saturday that lasted 4:12! Ristic d Büyükakçay 67, 76, 75. Not sure if qualifying matches count in official records.

Imagine them playing best of five…

There’s plenty of time to cruise past the 55 3 hour plus matches last year, led by Sorribes Tormo beating Osorio in 3 hours 54 minutes at Cleveland.

Unsurprisingly Sorribes Tormo and Haddad Maia both featured very prominently in last year’s match length ranking as well !

There have been a few 4 hour plus matches in ITF events in recent years, with Antalya being a notable location for that I believe. A few years ago, Mayar Sherif now ranked just outside the top 30 won a 4 hour 24 minute match in a ITF event in Spain. I assume that with many of those events not having the ball kids (especially before the semi-final / weekend stage), the players needing to retrieve balls themselves adds quite a bit of time to the match length.

The fact that Sorribes Tormo has only been involved in one 3 hour plus match this season, the epic against Haddad Maia at RG, is a surprise. But she has been involved in a total of 15 during the past 2 and half years or so since the start of the 2021 season.

Cleveland 2022 R1 - beat Osorio in 3 hours 54 minutes
Rome 2021 R1 - beat Giorgi in 3 hours 51 minutes
RG 2023 R3 - lost to Haddad Maia in 3 hours 51 minutes
Toronto 2022 R1 - beat Liu in 3 hours 33 minutes
Tenerife 2021 R1 - lost to Gracheva in 3 hours 26 minutes
Abu Dhabi 2021 R2 - beat Pera in 3 hours 23 minutes
Wimbledon 2021 R2 - lost to Kerber in 3 hours 19 minutes
Palermo 2022 R1 - beat Bogdan in 3 hours 19 minutes
Melbourne Gippsland Trophy 2021 R1 - lost to McNally in 3 hours 16 minutes
Palermo 2022 SF - lost to Begu in 3 hours 12 minutes
Melbourne Phillip Island Trophy 2021 R1 - beat Samsonova in 3 hours 8 minutes
Melbourne 2 2022 R1 - beat Haddad Maia in 3 hours 6 minutes
Parma 2022 R2 - lost to Davis in 3 hours 5 minutes
Monterrey 2022 R1 - beat Rakhimova in 3 hours 3 minutes
Monterrey 2022 QF - lost to Parrizas Diaz in 3 hours 2 minutes

At Parma in 2021, her match against Errani nearly last 3 hours, even though she retired at 2-2 in the 3rd set.

Some long scrappy matches. WTA has been much better in quality competitiveness that much of the ATP for years now, though this year has really stepped the ATP game back up.

Indeed, they cruised past last year - up to 74 matches with one event to go!
