He's now 2-7 in big titles finals.
How come he almost always comes up short?
How come he almost always comes up short?
Sometimes it just doesn't come naturally to folk. He isn't the first for whom this is the case, and he surely won't be the last. It's been obvious for years too. When he played Zverev in the Madrid final a few years back, he was the older more experienced player, he had 2 Roland Garros semi finals under his belt, he knocked Nadal out en route to the final and he was the toast of the town going into the match, and then he went down like the Titanic in two easy sets without so much as a whimper. He's incredibly lucky Zverev has since developed a case of the worst second serve yips I've ever seen in my life, or he'd have nothing. He's now 2-7 in big titles finals.

Exactly, he plays a high risk game, hitting the lines at max speed. In fairness he also pulls out huge winners on big points. He chokes a bit on the biggest stage but it’s nowhere near the worst.
His game is terrible for nerves - he puts everything into the strokes so there’s a lot to go wrong. Shorter, simpler strokes with a DHBH (think Andy) are more reliable and easier to reproduce in tough moments.
He just needs his opponent to choke harder than him. He's now 2-7 in big titles finals.

So same as the rest of the time when he's not nervous thenhe said, "I was so nervous I couldn't...think"
