Thiem and big finals

He gets nervous and then foolishly admits to it. Yesterday in his presser after he beat Novak he said, "I was, like, so tight in my whole body, I was so nervous I couldn't, I don't think, think or move."

Can anyone imagine Rafa or Fed ever admitting to this? Not good to give your opponents any advantage.

He's now 2-7 in big titles finals.

How come he almost always comes up short?
Sometimes it just doesn't come naturally to folk. He isn't the first for whom this is the case, and he surely won't be the last. It's been obvious for years too. When he played Zverev in the Madrid final a few years back, he was the older more experienced player, he had 2 Roland Garros semi finals under his belt, he knocked Nadal out en route to the final and he was the toast of the town going into the match, and then he went down like the Titanic in two easy sets without so much as a whimper. He's incredibly lucky Zverev has since developed a case of the worst second serve yips I've ever seen in my life, or he'd have nothing.

Interestingly this is now the 3rd time he has made back to back finals in a big title event and come up short:

2017-18 Madrid (l. to Nadal and Zverev).
2018-19 Roland Garros (l. both times to Nadal)
2019-20 WTF (l. to Tsitsipas and Medvedev).

In fairness he also pulls out huge winners on big points. He chokes a bit on the biggest stage but it’s nowhere near the worst.

His game is terrible for nerves - he puts everything into the strokes so there’s a lot to go wrong. Shorter, simpler strokes with a DHBH (think Andy) are more reliable and easier to reproduce in tough moments.

Mental midget sadly and he doesn’t have the luxury of a big serve or the kind of consistency the Big 4 had at their peak to win ugly.

His playing style is inefficient (huge swings from far behind the baseline, unnecessary running caused by changing pattern prematurely), and he runs out of energy at the end of big matches.

Against somebody who is truly in-form i.e., somebody he'd face in a big final, that slight attrition over the course of the match is often decisive.

Exactly, he plays a high risk game, hitting the lines at max speed.
When you are tight/nervous you chance to miss increases a lot.

He is unfortunate that a lot of his early years were spent getting beat on by Big 2 in big matches in public. The scars are tough to heal.

Thiem and big finals does not get along unless your names are Federer and Zverev, aka, chokers!

Its simple. Hes playing nice to watch tennis but you cant consistent hit lines with game like that its that simple. If you can hit lines every match on and on, i think Nadal and Djokovic would play like that aswell, but you cant.

He’s not the same player like two years ago when he used to hit powerful backhands all the time and rarely missed. He seems to have lost his confidence in his backhand because this year he has been slicing over 70% of the shots, and missing a high percentage of his drive backhands. This is something he has to work on if he wants to remain in the picture.

Yesterday was bad because he missed two easy sitters into an open court for what would have been the go-ahead break in the second set. No line painting was necessary :(
