Tommy Haas talking to himself!

I found an interesting clip in youtube land of Tommy Haas talking to himself at the Australian Open. Gives some real insight into the psychology of a top tennis player. I speak some German and can confirm the subtitles are correct. My first reaction of this was, "this guy's a bit of a nut case", which is weird because he always struck me as a rather laid back person. I wonder if any other players go through this type of routine?

Seems like it worked. He hit a sweet backhand winner and I think he won the match as well.

Interesting, but no I (and many others I'm sure) have always known he was a bit like that...I've seen him break 3+ racquets in the 4 times I've seen him live

That was great. It really shows you that these guys are not just tennis hero machines that automatically play amazing tennis simply by showing up at the courts.... It's a a constant fight internally and externally..

Haas is extremely emotional on the court, at least he isn't blaming his coach, in the past he would cuss out his coach and than fire him right in the middle of the match, because of his own mistakes. I think in the Haas "No Strings" episode his coach said he has been fired 5 times. :)

the one thing is, he might be doing it for gamesmanship reasons too. davydenko also speaks german. that being said Im fairly sure Haas wouldve talked to himself in any case. trying to figure out what he says to himself was one of the more minor reasons why I learned german

lol  You need to watch more Haas matches, the dude is anything but laid back when he's on court.

haha omggg that was so funny, i wonder if anybody listens to music to pump themselves up on changeover, when i hit to music (mainly trance) i play sooo good

Good thing that was in Australia and not at the French Open. If that happened at the French Open, Tommy might have found himself the ruler there.

Nice to see him beating Djokovic on grass in Germany last Sunday and winning his 1st tourney in two years.

Hilarious, nice find. It reminds me of the scene in LOTR where golem has a conversation with himself and answers his own questions.

wow didn't know haas was a complicated guy, talking about paying people etc. etc. for nothing..while playing a match..wow..

maybe by talking to himself haas is trying to freak out and weird out davydenko so davydenko can lose his concentration!!

If I can increase my chance of winning a match by talking to myself, heck, I would do it all the time.

More power to Haas.

That's a whole lot of selfanalysis to be happening during a changeover. :)

He obviously hasn't read "The Inner Game of Tennis" by W. Timothy Gallwey.

That's funny stuff. I like Haas.

Nice video. No kidding about Gallwey's book ^^^, but the thing I liked about Haas' attitude was that after letting himself have it during the changeover, he finished by telling himself that he couldn't and wouldn't lose, and to FIGHT.
