Tsonga vs Murray

Can Murray afford to pay all his coaches after a first round defeat? ;)

In all seriousness though, Murray supposedly has a coach dedicated to biomechanics and stroke improvement. Has the guy not looked at Murray's forehand for the love of god? Put me on team Murray and I'll fix it, maybe make it a legit weapon instead of a push.

Brad Gilbert probably has one hell of a smile kickin right now.

**** sake, my uni network decided my laptop didn't need internet connection in the fourth set, it comes back on Tsonga's winning point :(

I think almost everyone thought this would be Murray's time for a big Slam result especially his tuneup event win in Qatar. Oh well, I guess tuneup events are misleading. ;-) Especially one in Kooyong.

tsonga was a tough 1st rd opponent for murray but i thought he would pull through in 4 sets...oh well, we'll see how he progresses in 2008...

One thing that should be kept in mind is the part of last season that he missed with the wrist injury, hopefully he can pick up a decent amount of points. Got plenty of time to prepare himself for that now :(

It would have been interesting to see if Tsonga had to play anyone else in the first round. I have a feeling he would have given the other top seeds a run for their money but I didn't quite go for that sprained thigh. Another irritation was the constant line calls. Don't see the top seeds doing that too often

Murray needs a full-time shrink, not Brad Gilbert. The kid is the most immature player on the circuit.

Much Ado about nothing....

I haven't seen Murray play a whole lot, so I could be wrong, but I don't see what's so great about his game!?

He uses the drop shot a lot, moonballs his groundstrokes from time to time and seems to have a decent serve and net game. He seemed neither spectacular to watch, nor does he seem to be having fun himself. So what gives?

I think the hype surrounding him stems from the British media and their premature coronation of him. Why is he any more of a slam contender than say Mikhail Youzhny or Richard Gasquet?

moves very well for his size. Arguably best return of serve in tennis. Extremely solid groundstrokes, awesome backhand. Say what you will about his mental game (and yes it is fragile) but he fights until the end. Obviously all of this wasn't on display yesterday, but often it is.

not so sure - he might not even know the outcome since he is now coaching Bagdanovic who is likely playing a futures tourny in Uganda this week (or some other forsaken place where futures are held)

im extremely happy with the result as one of my coaches is tsonga's cousin and have been introduced to tsonga through him
tsonga is hilarious and just a genuinely nice guy and im happy he won this match

Murray does not suck. It was a crazy match, Murray definitely did not bring his best and Tsonga just out played him.

Count me in with the doubters until Murray can make the quarters or semis of a major.

I hate it when the hype precedes performance. Granted, he may have solid elements to his game, but the whole is much more than the sum of parts - it takes more than talent to have consistent results.

Who knows, maybe he doesn't have a straight head (e.g. Safin), or is prone to injuries (Haas), blows hot and cold (Gonzalez), or lacks focus (Nalbo).

What excuse does he have losing in the first round (if you ignore Tsonga's perf. for a minute) of the AO?
- He won Doha in great fashion
- He's coming off of a winter break, fully rested and proclaimed himself 100%, and feeling great
- He looked fitter than ever

So if fully fit, well rested and confident Murray could not take out an unseeded player in the first round, isn't talk of winning slams and replacing Federer at #1 a little far-fetched?

Just my 2c

You're saying we just don't see the part that Tsonga played well. Whether you win or lose also depends on your opponent's play that day. And, Tsonga isn't some qualifier. He is ranked 38 in the world and is a very dangerous player.
