Too much talking for the sake of talking.
The core of the matter is spin is good and best cure to hitting long or in the net!

Maybe you haven’t faced a real spinny ball yet!
I dislike that guy you played shots the most though... hacker chopper style lol

I'd probably dislike playing myself too, I slice and topspin during a rally... on grass the spin differential is huge and opponents generally don't like to change their stroke mechanics hugely because I've dictated it. Also the lefty swing I've got going esp on forehands and bh slices

Ok I’m the weird one! I prefer facing flat balls to spinny ones, especially on the serve.
flat balls are definitely more predictable, especially if you can't anticipate the bounce, or the "squirt".
but if you can anticipate the bounce, a spinny ball is usually much slower than a flat ball (arguable easier to handle if you're used to the spin)
i find that i'd rather hit against other topspinners (because the ball is my shoulder area strike zone,...whereas flat hitters ball stay low and tend to move through the court faster, and tend to land deeper)

but obviously a topspinner with good accuracty to hit side T to side T, will be hell, because he's able to create a bigger angle and force me to cover more court.
similarly a flatter ball hitter (presumeably with more pace than a spinner), will tend to push me back more

Pete ... Topspin was a teenager ... that was 5 years ago. Unless anyone tells you that you are foot faulting, how do you know. I don't play tournaments or USTA anymore ... and I saw that I was creeping up on the line in my serve video last year. I am still a nice guy.
it should be clear now that i didn't want to say anything at the time, because i was planning a 5y big reveal... lol
OR maybe i didn't mention anything because it's rec tennis and it doesn't matter.
i posted a video several years back of a good practice match and a TT poster was fixated on my opponents' footfaulting....I am so happy my opponent plays with me at the time i need him and that we are evenly matched...i did see him FF on the video but didn't care and never say anything to him..One day he told me an opposing USTA team was complaining about his FF..I said yeah some guys really care about that and changed the subject..
On the other hand there have been several instances in tournaments and leagues whereby some very good players know how to use the FF to gain an advantage..It's really sneaky and you need a lot of experience to catch it..

I played against a guy in a 4.5 USTA league doubles match who would jump forward and land 3-4 feet into the court before making contact on his serve, which was a flat dink, and then he would sprint forward and be all the way at the net for his first volley, and he was an excellent net player. I called him out on his blatant footfaulting, but he didn't stop doing it, and no one was available to be an umpire when I requested it. The player was an experienced player who had played a lot of league tennis for many years at 4.5 and 5.0 level, and he clearly knew he was cheating, but he didn't seem to care.

I was playing in a USTA tournament against a lefty about 5' 7" 60yo ..He was hitting a McEnroe angled (not the spin) serve to my backhand in the ad court..I couldn't understand how he was getting such a good angle so many times.... so i asked the Umpire to watch him..The Umpire never called a footfault but the guy heard me tell the umpire so he knew he was being watched...He never hit that angle again..He was just so good at getting 6 inches in which makes a difference if you know how to do it...

WTA players hit flat too, flat and powerful..its all about ur style. Many ways can be good and effective.

Flat is relative. Ever actually hit with one of them? Their ball is flatter than most (pro) guys but they still have a ton of RHS and spin. [emoji41]

Ive never hit with actual WTA players, but ive hit with my coach and a few juniors and also talked with her since she hits with some ex or current WTA players at times.

I also asked her about the difference between the WTA ball from one girl that was also ranked fairly high and mine just out of curiosity and she said the girls ball is more powerfull but mine has alot more spin and kicks higher, and im a rec player that started playing 2 years ago and nothing close to the topspin of ATP men.

So ues they hit quite flat.

You didn’t answer my question below.

“Do you think your spin on the ball can even be close to this girl's balls?! She probably hits twice as fast as you do and you think she hits flat”

Have you ever watched a WTA player in person practice court side?

Turn the volume up a bit to help you appreciate the quality of the strokes! And it’s open air, not the fake noise of balls you hear in some of the indoor court videos posted by members here!

I’ve hit and played regularly with two former WTA top 50 players. Both are incredibly good players. Neither hit with anything like the pace and spin of which Jarryd is capable. Nor did they hit flat. Less spin and pace than a male pro for sure, but not flat. [emoji41]

However hitting flat(ter) can certainly be an effective strategy if executed well.

Well she doesnt hit nearly as twice as hard as me so thats completely off, as for spin i cant answer your question becsause there are wta girla who hit quite alot of spin, so i have no clue what kind she hits, but the majority of girls hit dead flat and that has been my experience so far aswell, and also what my coach said from her experience.

Spin is not some holy grail, there are alot of much lower players that hit much more spin than your girl trust me, its not hard to spin the ball extremely much, if its slow.
Hitting a heavy spin ball that also has pace is much harder tho.

Just this last time we talked with my coach about a good junior 18yo girl and i was asking her how she plays and how hard of a time she gives her.
And ahe said ahe hits 0.1feet over the net and completely flat so alot of errors but if shes zoning its very hard to do much.

So you haven’t ever watched them in person and mostly rely on what you see in videos?

Did you read anything i wrote?

And also just saying.. theres a top ranked wta player hitting at the same place im training and shes there alot apecialy during off season, ive seen her hit countless times on the court next to me or the same court.

Shes a hard hitter too, one of the biggesr in wta.

Her ball is not much different from my coach nor any of good junior 18girls.

She would beat rhem easily of course, but its not because she hits much harder, she doesnt hit that much harder at all.

If you claim something then at least back it up with proof @Curious

Quote the part of the sentence in this thread where i claim i hit as hard as wta pros.

You sense it sometimes.

Your just stubborn and cant accept facts, if you think something then it must be like that, even if someone with real life experience tells you it is.

Fact is my utr 7-8 clinic male co-players hit WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more spin than my coach or any of the junior girls from the cluv with utr10+
The ball is nowhere near as fast as the girls hit but it has WAY WAAAAAY more spin.

But if you think in ur imaginary mind that its not like that then fine with me.

Your arrogance and ‘expert’ attitude despite a 2 year tennis background is just annoying.

My knees beg to differ :)

Fed will be 38 soon and hes playing at the highest possible pro level competitive level.
To say 40s are way past peak and physically poor years for rec tennis which is way less explosive and demanding is ignorant.

Your knees, elbows, wrist...whatever..can suffer at any age even teens.
Doesnt have as much to do with age as other possible factors (bad form, overuse...)

Lol what....
Fed is a professional athlete who's constantly working on his body and form. And keep in mind that Fed was way more explosive and moved way better back then. But even then, how many pros can play like Fed at 38?
Most ordinary people don't spend 5 hours a day working on their body like athletes as they get older so their bodies at 40s won't be as ideal for tennis as they were 20 years ago.

Sure, you can suffer injuries at any age but it's way less unlikely when you're young.

This is the most ignorant post I've ever seen.

Fine you can disagree if you want, but ur wrong in saying that a 40 year old rec player is way past his physical prime lol, there are ton of pros that play extremely high level in their 40s also and if you look at performance in times for example and compare the 20s 30s and 40s u wont see a big difference.
And its becoming more and more the case as medicine, recovery, fitness advances further.

Maybe Fire can reflect on this post when he hits his mid 40’s ;)

I can only speak from my experience and my body doesn’t handle the rigours of tennis like it did in my 20’s

But I never said recovery time is not slightly linger or you dont get a bit more pain or niggling discomfort aa you age more aswell as give more wear and tear to your body.

Im saying physicaly performance wise ur still close to ur peak at 40, specialy for rec players.

Some people here talk like u run 11seconds 100m at 25 and at 40 you run 20 lol

Comparing pros to amateurs is the least intelligent thing to do. Pros started playing tennis when they were young so even at 30,40 their bodies are used to high-intensity training. It's not like they go from 0 to 100 or something.
And please show me "tons of pros" who still play at high level in their 40s (compared to their 20s,30s).

Regarding rec tennis, take someone who's in their 40s and has never played tennis before, do you think he will do as well as someone in their 20s? Not to mention you learn faster (technique wise) when you're young (generally the younger you are, the faster you learn).

I did not mean tennis when i said 40year olds in sports, you have them in other sports.

Pros might be more uaed to but they are also at their absolute physical peak soon, so all they can do is go down.

How in shape is ur average 40 or 50 year old? Most likely overweight, didnt do much physical stuff, so basically far from his physical peak.

Now if he starts going to the gym, lose weigbt, work on strengthening, explosiveness.. he can gain alot of physical attributes and get much faster, stronger, explosive since hes far away from his physical peak.

Meanwhile a top athtlete can hardly improve these aspects anymore since he has them near maxed out.

So from that standpoint yes, average rec 40yo or 50yo can improve alot more physicaly compared to pros.

Do you disagree?
