U.S. Open could lose 2 days of play thanks to the remnants of hurricane Ida.

The remnants of hurricane Ida could bring heavy rain and wind to the NYC area and the in progress U.S. Open on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. The result could be a possible loss of 2-days of play affecting 2nd round matches.

I dread to think what it could do to the tournament - perhaps resulting in players having to play 3- and 5-set matches on consecutive days until the schedule is back on track. It remains to be seen how this could affect the eventual outcome of the tournament. For sure, it could increase the already high physical and mental stress upon the players. And, ticket buyers will be affected too as well as USTA income.

Which pros do you think would be most affected - physically and/or mentally - by the changes the storm will bring to the tournament? Who will be able to weather the storm conditions affecting the U.S. Open?

Does it mean it will be crazy wind even if they play under the roof as I heard there are open gaps between the roofs and the stands? Part of Djokovic’s issues with winning the USO in the past is that he hates windy conditions especially when it is swirling.

Can a lady (Ida?) do what no man can do and stop the CYGS cold in its tracks?

The US Open has three stadiums with retractable roofs: Arthur Ashe, Louis Armstrong, and the new Grandstand. Between those three, plus breaks in the weather, and the use of the other indoor courts if all else failed, the tournament is going to stay on track just fine.

You might be right, but I was following the info in this article. Fake news?

I haven't been to the US Open since they built the new Grandstand, but it looks nice and still small enough to get fairly close. The old Grandstand was my favorite at Flushing Meadows. When we went, we got there real early and had front row seats for some great matches. When they announed that it was being torn down, I was worried that the new Grandstand would lose the intimacy that the old one had.

What about the courts with roof ? They should just try to fit as matches into those courts as possible, maybe just play 24 hour a day

Younger players benefit in general, but the fact that all the players on Ashe and Armstrong are going to get through their first rounds is absurd. Look at the schedule too. TWO matches scheduled on Ashe in the day session? Surely that has to change now? Not that giving an advantage to a handful of players makes much difference overall.

Storm will only be a "tropical depression" when it reaches NYC, so just a little breezy but lots of rain, maybe 2-5 inches.

There's been talk of renting some of the lounges at LaGuardia Airport to use as extra "therapy rooms" to supplement what's been already added, and bringing in massage ladies from the neighboring Chinatown in Flushing -- ten dollars, ten minutes.

Interestingly enough, that's what happened in 1969 when Laver won the Grand Slam. Rain played havoc with the schedule and the final was pushed back days to the Tuesday.

An omen?

Ida is absolutely tearing through New Orleans and the Gulf of Mexico right now. 16 year anniversary of Katrina.

Awful scenes... hope anyone with relatives down there is doing OK.

So only two stadiums have a retractable roof. They should have just gone ahead and had a third one installed while building the compound
Not needed; the whole rationale for the enclosures is so TV has two matches to bounce back and forth between in the event of rain. Three not really needed.

If there are several inches of rain then that would further saturate the ground at the National Tennis Center. Remember that the Center is built on what was originally a low laying swamp that was filled in with ash.

If there are winds from the storm they could affect play because the sides of the roofed stadiums are not sealed. The conditions might also be dangerous for the spectators travelling to and from the matches.

This is true. Remember when there was flooding on the courts. The water came up from the ground on the edges.

Of FFS. Today was a good session and tomorrow will be action packed with whatever didn't finish today.

Incidentally whatever they did since 2019 they fixed the drainage problem by the entrance to Armstrong. In 2019 when it rained (I think only one day rained) there was some flooding and it was dangerous to walk in that area. The drainage problem is gone. There was a heavy downpour tonight but no water build up at all by the Armstrong entrances. Good job USTA. I never thought I say that. :-D

2 days of rain? I hope Tsitsi will spend them in a toilet so that he wouldn't have to go there waste the time when playing then.

Yeh, it's raining. Wow. I was there today. I brought a raincoat. Problem solved. :giggle:

Walking out I did stop to watch the night crowd coming in. Because they tend to all head in the East Gate and at more compressed times than day does and there was a backup where they had to go through Vax check and then the metal detectors and it was raining very hard and interesting scene to say the least. But seriously, it's just rain and wind. If you dressed for it you're fine. And if you didn't maybe check the weather forecast next time.

Crubed. Lazy reporting. Probably didn't have funds to send someone onsite. The Grandstand is the best stadium IMO but no roof. However, it has a scrim on the West side which keeps upper people out of the sun in the afternoon. You can see the shadow in the photo. There are no bad seats in that stadium IMO except some site line issues with those plastic barriers and maybe very upper part on West side you can hear GSP traffic sometimes.

I watched Bweh on GS today. Bweh looking good. Bweh to lose to Big Foe in R3.:giggle:

I am thinking about how USO organizers find answers to the tennis players' two issues; one where they can practice and one how they can stay safe when/if practising indoors since some of them are unvaccinated. Have you heard anything on those two concerns?

Stop trying to act hard. These are ridiculous conditions for an indoor tournament.

The players (and the fans) don't seem all that concerned by the way.

They practice the same places they always have. I was told all the people working for the tournament are vaccinated. (I don't know if that includes non-USTA like the restaurant employees. I'm going to start demanding Covid papers before I order food. YOUR PAPERS!). So if you are escorting a player to/fr court whether indoors or outdoors I think you must be vaccinated. I can't be certain though because I didn't speak to a USTA official that would know for sure but what I was told wasn't exactly surprising. I don't think the players practice indoors unless it's raining but if they do no fans are getting near it.

Remember all the fans are at least partially vaccinated. A small sample size but there isn't a single fan I spoke to on the line in or inside that wasn't fully vaccinated beyond two weeks. And it's outside that players will interact with fans and the contacts with players are brief. The players are not supposed to sign autographs after matches but selfies are OK. Some sign anyway, some don't. Some are into putting the mask on right away after a match and some not. Fans for the most part don't mask. Unless they go inside like the chase lounge but I haven't been yet so I don't know how seriously the masking is actually enforced especially as you don't wear it if eating and you can nurse a coke for a long time. :sneaky:

All in all the tournament feels pretty normal for fans. Not sure what the players think. No linespeople is a little strange. I don't think the refs are thrilled about it.

It is not nor has it ever been an “indoor tournament.” You should come if for no other reason then to check out the junk food court. You would be in heaven. But stop playing the game where everything is turned into a big deal about the USO. There was a storm. Some matches were delayed. The subways and trains are having delays too. So they’ll be back to normal and Thursday will have extra matches. End story. Not sure why you’re so panicked. Worry about Louisiana.

Addendum: despite your extreme nervousness a few hours of tennis were postponed last night and it rained. That’s it as far as storm and USO. The gates opened at 11am sharp and it all looked just fine. Thursday day matches are still going. I don’t know what’s going on in Armstrong and after 12 hours I don’t care.:(

Medvedev might get stuck outside in the rain just like Wimbledon.
Luckily this is the US and this is a JUST society governed by LAW. So it won't happen here.
In Wimbledon and the UK - it was a freaking joke. Blatant favoritism and machiavellian machinations.

Clearly the stadium was originally designed without roof.

By the way, don't the organizers use a weather radar to monitor the extreme rain?

The mayor declared a state of emergency for the severe weather. US Open organizers should have acted sooner.

“Clearly” except that the notion makes no sense but you can fight it out with Raul.

Yes, they have weather people.

The Mayor is a lame duck clown. No one listens to him anymore.

Nobody, absolutely nobody, misses the linespeople cluttering up the court. They need to go the way of toll booth collectors. Good riddance. Everything is running smoothly. Refs are happy. Fans are happy. She is happy.

Back to the weather, anyone knows if there will be any delays to the tournament caused by the flash floods in NY? Just saw it in the news. Seems very serious.
