I dread to think what it could do to the tournament - perhaps resulting in players having to play 3- and 5-set matches on consecutive days until the schedule is back on track. It remains to be seen how this could affect the eventual outcome of the tournament. For sure, it could increase the already high physical and mental stress upon the players. And, ticket buyers will be affected too as well as USTA income.

I haven't been to the US Open since they built the new Grandstand, but it looks nice and still small enough to get fairly close. The old Grandstand was my favorite at Flushing Meadows. When we went, we got there real early and had front row seats for some great matches. What about the courts with roof ? They should just try to fit as matches into those courts as possible, maybe just play 24 hour a day

Younger players benefit in general, but the fact that all the players on Ashe and Armstrong are going to get through their first rounds is absurd. Look at the schedule too. TWO matches scheduled on Ashe in the day session? Surely that has to change now? Not that giving an advantage to a handful of players makes much difference overall.

Storm will only be a "tropical depression" when it reaches NYC, so just a little breezy but lots of rain, maybe 2-5 inches.

Incidentally whatever they did since 2019 they fixed the drainage problem by the entrance to Armstrong. In 2019 when it rained (I think only one day rained) there was some flooding and it was dangerous to walk in that area. The drainage problem is gone. There was a heavy downpour tonight but no water build up at all by the Armstrong entrances. Good job USTA. I never thought I say that.

Because they tend to all head in the East Gate and at more compressed times than day does and there was a backup where they had to go through Vax check and then the metal detectors and it was raining very hard and interesting scene to say the least. But seriously, it's just rain and wind. If you dressed for it you're fine. And if you didn't maybe check the weather forecast next time.

Crubed. Lazy reporting. Probably didn't have funds to send someone onsite. The Grandstand is the best stadium IMO but no roof. However, it has a scrim on the West side which keeps upper people out of the sun in the afternoon. You can see the shadow in the photo. There are no bad seats in that stadium IMO except some site line issues with those plastic barriers and maybe very upper part on West side you can hear GSP traffic sometimes.

I am thinking about how USO organizers find answers to the tennis players' two issues; one where they can practice and one how they can stay safe when/if practising indoors since some of them are unvaccinated. Have you heard anything on those two concerns?

The players (and the fans) don't seem all that concerned by the way.

They practice the same places they always have. I was told all the people working for the tournament are vaccinated. (I don't know if that includes non-USTA like the restaurant employees. I'm going to start demanding Covid papers before I order food. YOUR PAPERS!). So if you are escorting a player to/fr court whether indoors or outdoors I think you must be vaccinated. I can't be certain though because I didn't speak to a USTA official that would know for sure but what I was told wasn't exactly surprising. I don't think the players practice indoors unless it's raining but if they do no fans are getting near it.

Remember all the fans are at least partially vaccinated. A small sample size but there isn't a single fan I spoke to on the line in or inside that wasn't fully vaccinated beyond two weeks. And it's outside that players will interact with fans and the contacts with players are brief. The players are not supposed to sign autographs after matches but selfies are OK. Some sign anyway, some don't. Some are into putting the mask on right away after a match and some not. Fans for the most part don't mask. Unless they go inside like the chase lounge but I haven't been yet so I don't know how seriously the masking is actually enforced especially as you don't wear it if eating and you can nurse a coke for a long time.

All in all the tournament feels pretty normal for fans. Not sure what the players think. No linespeople is a little strange. I don't think the refs are thrilled about it.

It is not nor has it ever been an “indoor tournament.” You should come if for no other reason then to check out the junk food court. You would be in heaven. But stop playing the game where everything is turned into a big deal about the USO. There was a storm. Some matches were delayed. The subways and trains are having delays too. So they’ll be back to normal and Thursday will have extra matches. End story. Not sure why you’re so panicked. Worry about Louisiana.

Addendum: despite your extreme nervousness a few hours of tennis were postponed last night and it rained. That’s it as far as storm and USO. The gates opened at 11am sharp and it all looked just fine. Thursday day matches are still going. I don’t know what’s going on in Armstrong and after 12 hours I don’t care.
