US Open’s Prestige?

How does a slam lose prestige bc of uncontrollable weather? Yall are fickle af
Not the weather (although the design of the stadium has actually made the situation worse and shows a complete absence of common sense) but the scheduling of events forcing every major male QF to be completed after midnight (which is a huge are you *****' kidding me).
The cameras as they were originally positioned in the new stadium making it almost impossible to actually view the matches, yes they fixed it but isn't that something you would normally check out before the matches started?

What do you mean by quality? The AO this year was really poor for matches I thought if you mean match quality, and for all the little subjective things I give it a fat F because the final was on at like 3am in the timezone I was in :D. I went to the USO 3 times last year and thought they put on a great event, certainly just as good (but obviously different) to Wimbledon, the WTF and Queens Club which I've also been to. Side note, for food it goes WTF>>USO>>Wimbledon>>>>>>>>>>>Queens.

Slam prestige is overrated. Ultimately, winning the USO or AO counts the same as winning Wimbledon or RG on a players resume. Arguably, the least prestigious slam is the best slam overall these days.

As an outsider this year has restored some rapidly diminishing prestige to the USO. It's the first time in a long time that the vast bulk of contenders have shown up fit, in good form and produced high quality matches. In terms of prestige it seems to me most would have Wimbledon as the pinnacle, and the USO has this year restored parity with the other 2.

compared to the other slams, where does the US Open rank in terms of prestige? Especially after this years $hitshow (heat, humidity, court speed, etc).

Mine would be:

1. Wimbledon
2. Aussie
3. French
4. US Open
Uhh what....US Open has historically always been 2nd in prestige. Roland Garros was third.
People ranking Roland Garros over the premiere hard court tournament of the year lmao. Federer doesn’t skip HC season...he skips clay.
Federer, as other top players in the past, gave up on the FO after turning 35 because it is the most exhausting and demanding of an all court game. Strong Serve Specialists and power players: Sampras, Becker, Edberg, McEnroe, Vines, Gonzalez, Roddick, among others, have rarely won at RG.

not dependent on level of play. Like the fifa world cup is by far the most prestigious football event, though the level of play is below champions league

Having said that, tennis is completely off the radar here in the US so it's difficult to tell what it is globally. Good to see that it is more popular in OZ.. sad to see what tennis has become.. a fringe sport here in the US.

I’d agree with all of that except I’d rate the USO ahead of Wimbledon in terms of quality. In fact, as far as overall entertainment goes, Wimbledon is the most prestigious, but frankly also the most boring.

I think it used to be a ranking when it came to Slam prestige but now it's just Wimbledon and then the rest, which are all equal in my view. USO doesn't lose any prestige because of the bad weather this year since they have no control over the elements.

This post made me recall being in high school in the U.S. back in the 80s and daily passing by the one tennis court on campus. It had broken concrete and a chain-link net. I started playing recreationally when I was 10 and enjoyed the sport, but seeing that shabby court at school every day just made me think that tennis was not a sport to consider seriously, that baseball and football are much more worthy of one's time and effort. Had tennis been better represented, I would probably have dedicated more more time and energy to it than I did to baseball and football, which are temporary sports. Tennis is a much better sport that can be played throughout one's life.

I'm sure there was socio-economics at work here. In the 80s, my high school was more working class. Today, it is an upper-middle-class high school that has wonderful tennis courts and probably a tennis team as well.

The US Open right now has the most prestige cause it is surface where it evens out everyone's game. A lot of the players game are most balance at US Open.
Wimbledeon and French Open are no longer prestigious cause of the politics, pettiness and it only benefits certain players.
The one thing about the US Open is that it does not benefit anybody nor was there any politics at place to favor one player over the other.

The order of prestige will never change:

Wimbledon
Roland-Garros
US Open
Australian Open

It has already changed in the eyes of the majority of the knowledgeable public, but at this point I believe that you are busy making whatever statements that will bring you any attention.

It is already a fact that the AO is better organised, better positioned, with better facilities and better vision Major than USO.

In fact, for a number of years now the USO has been copying unsuccessfully the AO in more than one way.

Wimbledon will always be the most prestigious. Spot two is really dependent upon the cast of characters who are at the top. If the top players are American centric players such as Agassi/Sampras/McEnroe et al then it's clearly the US Open. If it's European centric as it has been over the last fifteen years then it's Roland Garros.

I think there's a compelling case to be made that the USO is the most difficult to win so perhaps that elevates in prestige.

I think this basically dead on although I would drop Wimbledon big on quality. The tennis itself isn't at the highest level and the organization totally botched the most important match of their tournament this year. Delayed matches with a roof available on two courts is inexcusable. Another example being the Fritz/Zverev match. Roland Garros also suffers in this regard. From a quality perspective AO is the best run, then probably the US then the Europeans.

LOL Roger doesn't determine the value of these events. Fanboy alert.

as anyone who's watched and played tennis for more than the past year (and isn't a Nadal apologist) knows:

1) Wimbledon
2) US Open
3) French Open
4) Australian Open

1 and 2 are reasonably close. 3 is pretty far removed from the top 2. as for the gap from 3 to 4, the distance from Paris to Melbourne is a decent approximation.

In the 70's, 80's and even into the 90's the USO was solidly behind Wimbledon as the #2 slam in influence, interest and prestige. It's sunk to dangerously low levels now and is firmly in fourth place these days. The AO used to be a junk slam which was ignored and boycotted, but it's transformed itself in the past 15 years, to its credit.

Prestige is an abstraction that is hard to quantify. I prefer degree of difficulty, intentionality, and relevance to the rest of the tour.

1. RG—most difficult
2. AO—most fun
3. USO—craziest
4. Wimbledon—most outmoded

This is not an arguement. This is fact.

Not sure what the order should be now except Wimbledon never changes

I would say Wimbledon is pretty much at the top and 2 & 3 are close enough in terms of prestige. AUS open is by far the least prestigious
