Right before Indian Wells there were a bunch of threads about how awful Vincenze was to ballboys, etc. All I knew about him was that he looked intense on court. Once I saw him interviewed about his comeback, etc., and thought he was funny.
At IW I watched his second-round match against Escude - a great tennis match, by the way, played at a very high level. Nicolas had beaten Schalken in the first round and was brilliant out there, but Vince was very tough, very smart. Served well and smacked that two-hander all over the court, and stood in tough with his passing shots against the super-athletic Escude pressing him, attacking the net. Three sets of brilliant tennis. I was right behind the court, Grandstand 1, I think it's called. Spadea never said a cross word to the ballkids, never gave any trouble to the ump, and both he and Escude showed each other respect. Compared to Roddick, Agassi, Courier, etc., a gentleman on the court. He had a group of friends rooting for him, and a massive crowd of maybe two hundred at its height.
Escude and Spadea was the best match I saw in three days.
