We won’t appreciate this kind of Tennis until it’s gone

Long post but I suppose it’s more meaningful than a “Nadal will be crushed by Norrie” thread
I was watching the Big 3 today and I had a hollow feeling watching them all because I realised that soon things will be over and we all don’t know how much time they will play. It sounds sad but the first time I ever saw Federer on court way before he won his first major I watched him and had a feeling that he was something special, it was an experience to watch him play even if he lost in early rounds. They were all playing the same sport but it was like Federer was operating in his own universe and he just made his own rules up and had shots that had never been seen before. I guess it’s the same if you are a Nadal or Djokovic fan. They play the game like no one else. Federer doesn’t even know who I am or knows I exist yet I worship the guy because the simple act of watching him hitting a ball over the net has saved me from some of my darkest days.
I’ll never understand the GOAT argument but to me it’s personal opinion. Federer could have 10 majors and he will always be the best there has been to me in terms of artistry and certain points that just make your jaw drop because they defy reality.
I will dread the day he retires but honestly I’d still watch Novak and Rafa play when he does because I’ve gone through so much turmoil and happiness both seeing Fed lose to them and win against them over the years that it would be foolish to not continue to watch them play.
Once they all retire though there is literally nobody I’ve seen in this generation that gave me that feeling I had 18-19 years ago when I first saw Roger. It’s just like watching 2 people hitting a ball over a net and its like there is just no heart anymore and just constant baseline exchanges. It’s just not the same.
if I could go back all those years and watch it all again and even have the same outcomes I’d go back. Fedal finals were just pure fire. Whoever your GOAT is you will definitely feel sad when all three have retired and all we have left is Kyrgios trash talking everyone and Zverev-Busta finals lol

Haha I'm JK of course, great post. I am with you. I have come to love Rafa over the years and even come to have a small place in my heart for Djoker.

It becomes nostalgic for us. I will root for Djoker if he is the last one of the big 3 still playing.

I'm always going to watch tennis, I can understand for some it might be difficult, especially if you have only seen the big 3 in action, but when you have seen several generations, I don't know, maybe it is just a little more easier.

Something about hitting the yellow ball that is addictive to me, and no freaking way am I ever missing any Wimbledon while I am on this planet.

There is now a slam called after your favorite player, and you only mention Wimbledon? Interesting.

Well said.
I was watching Fed today and wondering how long we'll be watching him play for, he looked older too.
I enjoyed watching fed before he won his first slam win too, it isn't just the winning it's the way he plays, he'll hit an unorthodox shot that just isn't in the rule book.
Like you i'll watch Rafa and Djokovic, after that I don't see me being interested, who knows maybe we'll change our minds.

We're all going to shed a tear or two when the big three bring the curtain down....don't even deny it y'all.

Federer to this day makes some shots nobody else in the top 100 makes. That's why I'll watch him until the day he retires.

To me the definition of a truly great athlete is one who makes you alter your lifestyle to watch. I’m a big time supporter of football, basketball, tennis, even NFL/NHL since I was a kid. I would nearly never miss games I cared about.. up until I learned about alcohol and girls and other things in college.

Especially pre-COVID being at work or in class or out all day I would let sports come and go, if I had time to watch then great but my commitments are to my friends grades and job. I didn’t watch the CL final the past 3 years or the Final Four or even the Super Bowl in 2019. But if Ronaldo/Messi were playing I guarantee I’d have found a way to watch. I missed every golf tournament from 2015-2019 probably but was screaming at the TV when Tiger won the Masters. Even a few weeks ago my brother was graduating from school the day of Nadal-Djokovic in Rome - I still carved out some phone viewing time and watched that match. I dont remember when I last missed a LeBron playoff game if I could help it. The transcendent athletes, the ones who pull you in because you know that maybe, just maybe you’re going to see something truly incredible, once in a lifetime, those are the rare ones. We happen to have 3 of them. And even for people who post on a tennis forum, the 1% of caring about tennis, I doubt many of us would be jazzed over a Zverev-Berrettini final like in Madrid. But after all these 10-15 years of dominance, having seen them play every match there is to play, I’ll never be able to pull myself away from Federer or Nadal or Djokovic at a Slam. That’s the testament of greatness.

I felt this way after Sampras and Rafter retired.

Wait, what? Fifteen years of Nadal "grinding 10 meters behind baseline" and you can't stomach the likes of Zverev? No offence, but Nadal is at least half the reason why players like Zverev exist.

at least Nadal can make it look nice and his forehand is so enjoyable to watch... people hate pushers like Murray yet they gave him pass because he was very good at it... Zverev well...

It would be hard to entirely avoid the ATP, dumb person. The TV people are always going back and forth between the ladies and the men. And not all the men are as insufferable as Zverev. Just pick someone else and root against that turd. Unfortunatey Zverev and Thiem are best friends and Thiem is friendly with everyone, so Zverev probably goes dancing with numerous ATP members. Bad thought.

I will probably watch grand slams but god... please do something to make big3 younger and let them play for longer... i would pay to watch them even if they were 50 years old.

Liar. The first time you watched Fedal, you hated them, and longed for the old days when tennis was real, with Sampras and Agassi being the best thing ever being ruined by new gen kids who just hit balls with no soul.

Long post . . .
Your thread title implies that these guys haven't gotten their due. I think they've been appreciated plenty. I think people have been falling over themselves to show their "appreciation" for going on 20 years now.

I think @Hitman touched on this already, but the only people who will be devastated to see this era end are those who have only lived through this era. I am (and have been for quite some time) looking forward to the future. I always look forward to the future. Because nothing lasts forever, especially when you're on top. Eras in open tennis, for the most part, never last this long. Five years, eight years, ten years, maybe. And then, change. This one has gone on since 2003. I cannot wait to see the back of it. Fifteen human years are like an eternity in sporting years. They could throw Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck in the next Slam final, and I would watch. For me, the game is, and will always be, way way bigger than any player.

Mickey Mouse vs Donald Duck would be an incredible final.

Well, we already had Mickey vs. Goofy, also known as Dumb and Dumber finals.
Referring to Thiem vs Zverev? I enjoyed the ridiculousness of it, but it certainly didnt seem like a grand slam title was at stake. I hope Thiem isn't too satisfied with it. Maybe his recent slump came after realizing that it was kind of a joke tournament.

It'll definitely be sad when the big 3 call it a day. I will be rooting for the last man standing vs the guys looking to take over the top spot. I imagine Djokovic will be struggling to fend off the young guns in a few years and taking shameless beatings in 2nd-3rd round of tournaments.
