What happened in December? ATP and WTA in shambles. Summary of 2016 so far

The strange events occurred in the first week of January.
WTA Brisbane premier tournament saw qualifier Samantha Crawford reach the SF. Halep and Sharapova withdrew prior to the tournament. WTA Auckland had top seed and defending champ Venus lose in the first round as well as Ivanovic. A qualifier reached the SF and an unseeded player reached the final. WTA Shenzhen Open had 6 of the 8 seeds fall by the 2nd round, 3 unseeded playrs reached the SF.

ATP Doha had 4th, 5th and 6th seeds (including top 10 player Ferrer) lose in the first round. Unseeded Marchenko reached the SF.

Second week got stranger.
WTA Premier Sydney had a large amount of withdrawals prior and during the tournament. These included big players like Kvitova, Radwanska, Keys, Safarova, Gavrilova, Bencic and Kerber. We had a qualifier reach the final of a premier tournament and an unseeded champion in Kuznetsova.

ATP Auckland had Ferrer lose in the SF to unseeded Sock who retired in the final winning only one game. ATP Sydney had top seed Tomic controversially retire the tournament while second seed Thiem also retired. 2 unseeded players reached the SF.

Third week
was the Aus Open which was crazy for the WTA.
WTA, unseeded Konta reached the SF. Qualifier Zhang Shuai who had never won a main draw slam match reached the QF which including knocking out 2nd seed Halep in the first round. 8 of the top 16 seeds failed to reach the fourth round. These were the 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 8th, 9th, 11th, 13th and 16th seeds. 12 of the 32 seeds fell in the first round which was a record.

ATP, former champion Nadal lost in the 1st round and former champ Wawrinka lost in the 4th round. 23rd ranked Monfils reached the QF without facing a top 50 player.

5th week wasn't so bad.
ATP Montpellier had a qualifier reach the SF and a further 2 unseeded players reach the SF. The 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th seeds all fell by the 3rd round.

6th week was bad.
WTA Premier St Petersburg. 3rd seed Wozniacki lost in her first match. Unseeded Kasaktina reached the SF.

ATP500 Rotterdam had 3rd, 4th and 7th seed fall in the first 2 rounds. 3 unseeded players in the SF of a bigger tournament, one was a qualifier. Unseeded champion in Klizan. No top 10 players competed including defending champ Stan and defending finalist Berdych. ATP Buenos Aires saw Nadal lose in a 3rd set tiebreaker for the first time ever on clay. Unseeded Almagro reached the final. 3 top 10 players played in Buenos Aires which was an ATP250 yet none at ATP500? ATP250 Memphis saw wildcard Fritz reach the final despite it being only his 3rd ever ATP main draw tournament. Also the 8th seed was ranked 79th in the world showing a lack of big players at this event.

7th week was a record breaking disaster for the WTA and a shambles for the ATP.
WTA Premier Dubai saw all seeds lose their first match, meaning all QF players were unseeded. Errani won the title without defeating a seeded player or a top 20 player. It was Errani's biggest title to date. Dubai also had a bunch of high profile withdrawals (Serena, Kerber Wozniacki, Safarova, Radwanska, Bacszinsky)
WTA internatonal saw all seeds lose before the semifinals.

ATP500 Rio Open saw no seeded players reach the final. Nadal lost to Cuevas in the SF (weird). 3rd seed Tsonga, 4th seed Isner, 6th seed Sock and 8th seed Bellucci all fell in the first round.
ATP250 Marseille had an unseeded player win the title. Weirdly enough the competition offers less points than an ATP500 yet Berdych and Stan played here and not in Rotterdam where they reached the final the previous year. ATP250 Delray Beach saw no seeded players reach the final. 1st, 2nd and 3rd seed fell in the first round while the 6th and 7th seed fell in the 2nd round.
So 3 ATP tournaments were held in the 7th seed and all 3 winners were unseeded, 2 WTA tournaments were held and both winners were also unseeded.

8th week (current) is looking bad.
WTA Premier 5 Doha has seen the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th seed lose before the QF. Halep lost her first match to a qualifier whilst top seed Kerber lost her first match since winning the Australian Open (this included a breadstick).

ATP500 Acapulco has seen the top 3 seeds lose in the first 2 rounds including top 10 players Nishikori and Ferrer. 6th and 8th seed also fell in the first round. Potentially looks like only 2 seeds will be in the QF. ATP250 Brasil Open saw the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th seeds lose in the first round.

So what is happening on both tours? Are we seeing a decline in tennis? Just a rough patch? Players we thought would have breakthroughs are underperforming (Dimitrov, Kerber, Muguruza, Nishikori, Halep). Are we in a transitional era?

In the ATP, only Djokovic has been completely consistent as usual, untroubled by injury like Federer or distractions like Murray (paternity leave). Everybody else has been underperforming. I still want an explanation from Wawrinka and Berdych as to why neither chose to defend their title and finalist points at 500 Rotterdam and chose to play 250 Marseille instead? Did Richard Krajicek p1ss them off or something? Also why the hell is Isner playing clay tournaments in South America (Rio) instead of his usual home hardcourt fare (Memphis)?

In the WTA, we know that Serena doesn't give a rat's ass about anything other than a Slam and withdraws from everything else with monotonous regularity. I don't think we can fairly call Kerber an underachiever this year given that she has just won the Australian Open but everybody else is either chronically injured or seems woefully inconsistent!

Maybe tennis fatigue has started to set in for many players?

Perhaps the top players are simply getting too comfortable with all their wealth? :p

I mean a player ranked say 140 has to fight for every point to pay the bills, top players however primarily make sure their sponsorship revenue does not dry up!
And oh yeah they got to play a game of tennis by time as well. :p

Been an interesting year for me. Love seeing theim and to a lesser extent fritz make their moves. Interesting to see the utter collapse of nadal. Sloan wins another tournament, az is hurt again and wished serena played more but like another poster said she only cares about slams and Miami. Really dont blame her. Maria is a mess and i hope it stays that way. Oh and joker is killin everyone.

Krajicek was very surprised. Federer and Kyrgios had withdrawn which was a big blow and he contacted Berdych, Stan and Djokovic to play but they all refused. Annoying thing as well was Kyrgios withdrew yet played Marseilles as well the following week and won the damn thing, yet couldn't play in Rotterdam? WTF?

WTA really struggling atm. Someone posted this on twitter.
Halep, Kvitova & Wozniacki are 8-15 in 2016 combined. Insane!
Kvitova in particular is 2-6.
Shocking

Woz falling off cliff is predictable. Kvitova literally could disapear then all of a sudden win wimby. Never saw anything in halep. Always thought she had to work to hard to win. Not sure why anyone cares about Rotterdam.

I'm even more convinced now that Krajicek must have upset them in some way. Djokovic hasn't played Rotterdam since 2010 but there seems to be no other logical reason for Stan and Berdych, the defending champion and finalist, preferring to play for less points and less money in Marseille!!!

But it is a 500! Why would you prefer to play a 250?

Of late I've just enjoyed watching the players I like - their style of play, regardless of results. But of late, the WTA especially, has been a huge joke. No player - outside Serena Williams - seems capable of performing consistently well in two tournaments running.
You can argue it's the depth in the women's game, but actually, IMO, it's a much of muchness. It's boring and relentless.
Williams will be no.1 for ever because from no.2 onwards they can't string a run at tournaments.
Depressing.

All the Rotterdam money went to Fed. So the others preferred to go to Marseille for the cash.

I am liking the current scenario, different players are winning , if not big at least small tournaments, making whole tournament unpredictable

Lot's of suprises, different tournament winners, couple of the young guns having breaktrough- weak era...

I never said the words 'weak era'.
I really hate the whole weak era thing. All it is is an attack on various big 3 players. Saying this is a weak era is to attack djoko, calling the early 00s a weak era to attack Fed and the latter 00s to attack Nadal.

I did say transitional area. And obviously I'm not talking about players like Fed and Djoko who aren't losing frequently. More the regular top 10 players in Ferrer, Nishikori, Berdych, Gasquet who have lost early at quite a few tournaments.

The only notable carnage is Serena losing AO.

I still don't see any time in the near future 34.5 year old Fed and no wins over top 50 Rafa being booted out of top 5.

LOL era

Most of the top WTA players where injured at the end of 2015, most turned up for the AO first round points and money and probably hoped they'd beat a QF or lowly ranked player. It's worth turning up and losing. Unsure why there where so many injuries prior but seemed like most dated back to 2015.

The ATP is not in disarray. It's following form but not as predictably as during 2008-11 where top 8 could be penciled into QF. It's likely to be more like 90's going forward.

Players who have won their biggest career title in February:
Vinci
Klizan
Errani
Cuevas
Suarez Navarro (Doha today)
Tomic or Thiem tonight

Also despite Errani and Vinci being slam finalists and Suarez Navarro being a 6 time slam quarterfinalist, none of them had a title bigger then a WTA international tournament. Now they all are Premier tournament champions.

Could care less about the WTA and the ATP is better than ever with Kry, Thiem, Fritz, Nishi etc all playing well. The last month has been one of the most enjoyable in a long time.

In shambles? Oh no, the big 4 aren't winning for once. I'm happy someone like Thiem has done so well, winning two titles in a month with some great wins, and Kyrgios had some great wins too. It can only be good for tennis when some younger guys pick up confidence.

Actually the big 4 are still pretty much dominating the race rankings (minus Nadal). I was more talking about player from 5-20. Cilic, Tsonga, Isner, Gasquet, Goffin, Anderson, Simon, Ferrer all not in top 10 race and falling before the finals like they never used to. Ferrer has quite a few surprise losses this year as has Nadal on clay and other top 10 players aren't even in the top 30 race which I think is a bit of a shambles.

I like that change is happening on tour but I'm very surprised at how quickly it's happening with top players dropping points from last year left, right and centre.
