What is it with Novak's serve these days?

His first serve too now. Under 60% points won vs Federer in Toronto, and 59% won against Roddick on his first serve. That's just horrendous.

He looks like he's changed his service motion too. It's almost completely from the shoulder. Very little elbow bend. I wonder if he's compensating for an injury. In any event, he's going to ruin his shoulder the way he's serving now.

His whole attitude is wrong, seriously I wish he would just stop playing and rethink his whole approach to tennis or life or something

His serve lacks a lot of power these days and I don't know why. At USO 07 and AO 08 he averaged 1st serve at around 200 kmh. Now it's around 185.

No more slams for him with that kind of serving.

Whatever it is, it's a psychological problem. Doesn't look motivated at ALL anymore.

I'm going with "Anxiety Disorder with Major Depression."

The weight loss is downright disturbing -- loss of appetite? Nothing about him looks happy. He looks like he has been sold into slavery and cannot bear another day in the cotton field.

I genuinely feel sorry for him.

He has taken some big losses, and probably hasn't recovered from them. Not everyone can become some robotoid that brushes off losses like a "pro".

His serve is also now, the ugliest serve on the mens tour. Its too bad, I quite liked him. But his serve is semi Guillermo Vilas now.

His serve used to be his biggest weapon back in the day. Combining a consistent motion and his great flexibility, Novak used to be known for some pretty big first and second serves

That was because he bounced the ball so many times, his opponents fell asleep waiting for a serve.

What has he changed in the serve? He needs to go back to his original motion.

It's like Murray saying he doesn't love playing tennis anymore last spring. It's a slump and he needs to become a hunter again.

Novak played today?. I mean i saw Roddick show up at the court but couldnt locate Novak. Some guy came in, threw the towel early and never was a factor in the match.

The reason why his serve is so inconsistent and has lost pace is because he holds the racket back far too long before reaching the trophy position. Instead of snapping his wrist (the motion that creates all the power) he is almost throwing the racket at the ball, a bit like the way you would bowl a cricket ball, which doesn't create enough pace in tennis. I had the same problem a couple of years ago and it really affects your consistency. Djokovic needs to completely redevelop his service action to correct this problem. This may be the main reason why he has had little success since '08: people can take advantage of his serve and consequently put the rest of his game under pressure.

I heard Djokovic say in an an interview that the change in his service(motion) is involuntary, and he's trying to fight it...

Brad Gilbert during Wimbledon said his coach changed his serve motion.
Yeah, it was a mixture of both of these. Nole said that his shoulder was tired during the world tour finals last year, causing some involuntary disruption of his serve. Todd Martin told him to change his serve motion entirely after the WTF, which we saw happen at the start of the year.

In the past few months he's tried to revert back to his old motion but..
