What was the best tennis season?

Not sure why you're appealing to the authority of the Djokodal fanbase then. I've seen posters argue a guy like Safin wouldn't be top 15 today based off the AO 2005 SF. Your fanbase has lately cornered the market on stupid.
I am a Nadal fan though. Most Federer fans wouldn’t conflict with each other I know that for certain.

I have had disagreements with some Nadal fans here btw. I probably won’t respond to a opinion like that again anyways.

I ignore the Fed fans I don't like.

You said 2005 wasn't on the same level as 2009/2012, I said in terms of great matches it was - you came back with snark but have no interest in actually talking about events or matches....

Not saying you should praise it but it's relative no? Looking at all the big finals across the three years ( 05, 09, 12) the 2005 YEC is certainly not at the bottom - there's enough straight set duds to nudge it easily out of the bottom rung IMO. As far as Madrid goes it's easily in the top half of finals for those years, the fact Ljube couldn't win shouldn't dissuade from it actually being a good quality encounter enhanced by being BO5.

Well if BO5 is an enhancement than the whole modernity is historically weak due to BO5 being restricted to slams only (and DC until recently, sigh!!).

I responded in a person opinion or if they like matchup debates. The original post is was general. But if you want my view ......

AO - 09/12 , 05
FO - 09 , 05 , 12
Wim - 09 , 12 , 05
USO 05 , 09/12
WTF - 09/12 , 05
That’s for slam events and the YEC.

1987

While you guys are picking years in which there was (what you consider) one or two good matches between your heroes, 87 featured matches involving Lendl, Becker, Edberg, McEnroe, Connors, Mecir, Wilander, Cash, Leconte, Noah and others.

Draws were deep, no poly, AO on grass and Wimbledon still on proper grass. There was true surface variety and also playing styles. There may have been better matches in other years, but that was the best season of tennis since I've been watching.

Australia beat Sweden to win the Davis Cup a few days before it kicked into 1987 and Sweden won it in 87. It was just an epic 12 months of tennis.

I definitely think the diminishing amount of BO5 is watering down tennis, in 2005 there weren't byes in the first round either. It all adds.

I've not said anything about weak or strong though, I'm just talking about great matches. Already said that 2009/2012 were strong years.

As to the Q:

1995 could be the goat year btw. Peak Agassi, prime PETE, prime-ish Becker, peak Muster hoarding the kley. Not a single dud tournament at the top, beautiful stuff.

Off the top of my head I can't think of a more competitive season in the last 30 years. The big surprise here was Chang, who not only cracked the all-important 60% in GW on clay - it does speak well of Muster's run that he was still able to dispatch this Mike in straights - but also upset Pistol on carpet in their YEC SF. Plus Courier was another (if less successful) floater who pushed Pete at the HC majors (especially Down Under, of course). So you could say there were six guys who had a real shot at a major in '95, which can't be said of most other years.

P.S. How about dem DC finals:

If I were to grade them all out of 10.

2005:
AO - 9/10
FO - 8/10
WI - 6/10
US - 8.5/10
YEC- 5/10

Total: 36.5/50

2009:
AO - 9.5/10
FO - 8.5/10
WI - 7/10
US - 7/10
YEC- 9.5/10

Total: 41.5/50

2012:
AO - 9.5/10
FO - 7/10
WI - 8/10
US - 6.5/10
YEC- 7.5/10

Total: 38.5/50

Factoring in masters etc...I think 2005 makes up the ground, especially on 2012 IMO.

Fair enough. I suppose it depends what you consider when talking about the field as well.

Would probably bump 2009 Wimby up half a percentage point but overall this is exactly what my list would look like. The 2005 WTF (aside from the final, which was fun enough) brings down the season a bit, but the Masters were the best of the three years and they raise 2005 back up. 2012 has the advantage of being an Olympics year and Murray's run was pretty fantastic, but I don't think it's enough given the Masters that year weren't as good as in 2005 and 2009.

My pick was 1987, but I don't disagree with anything here.

Not only was 96 the best year end match ever, it was probably the best match in the history of tennis. I've watched it many times and have never seen anything superior.

95 would be in my top group of years too. I don't think the overall depth was as good as 87, but there were many incredible matches. Wimbledon and USO in particular.

It's laughable that anyone would consider any year in the past decade on the same level as either.

2012. Then, when the weak era beckoned and boring personalities attacked, and the world needed him most, Roddick vanished
Great year. Agreed. Big 4 split the slams. Big 3 run on all cylinders at their best slam.

Murrgoat breaks the glass sealing and grabs gold at the Olympics and his first slam at the USO.

Novak has the best year in terms of points but Fed wins back #1 for a long spell to break Pete’s record.

Fun year to be a tennis fan of any player really.

2008 was awesome, so many strong players. The big 4 obviously but Tsonga, Davydenko, Roddick, Del Potro in the mix too.

2012 would be my second choice. 2009 not far behind, but marred slightly by Nadal's injury and Djokovic was not playing as well as he did in 2008, or later would in 2011 onward.

2012 is overrated. Nadal was absent the entire second half, Federer seemed uninterested after winning Wimbledon/Cincinnati/retaining#1, there were few exciting matches, and there were no strong young guns in the mix.

Not gonna say anyone's opinions are wrong, but labelling 2012 as an overrated season while having 2006 as the best seems pretty sus, ngl.

Well, Djokodal and Murray were already 25-26, so not old enough to be needing younger guns. It was ok in this front.

Come on, 2009? You cannot pick a year in which the number one player (by the beginning of the year) was injured half of the season.
In 2009 Nadal played 80 matches, the same amount as he played in 2017 and way more than his 2018 and 2019 seasons. We all know that he skipped Wimbledon that year, but that's just one tournament. He competed in all Masters events as well as the YEC (a tournament he often skipped)...so yeah, not sure what you're on about.

2011 did this better. They met three times at the Slams that year, and if not for a strong performance from Tsonga they would have played in all four Slams.
yeah that was interesting year too. But in 2015 to AO 2016 both played at their highest level ever.

Not sure exactly. There was just a lot of buzz among the general public and especially with younger tennis players. Federer was still on the rise, and it was just crazy seeing how he kept getting better and doing things we'd never seen before. Agassi was still putting up good fights, so there was a lot of rooting for him.

Tennis is not tennis anymore after Laver and Rosewall.

Would add 2012 had Rafa not missed the remaining season after Wimbledon. And 2011. Not that i enjoyed but competition was good.
