I just saw American Sniper and thought the production and cast handled the sensitive subject matter well. I would have liked them to explore more the 'how and the possible why' he was later murdered back in the U.S., but maybe out of respect to the family they didn't.

I also saw Kingsman which was ok, if a little laboured, for a spoof.

Saw Piku by Shoojit Sircar yesterday. The critics (both Indian and abroad) have noted with approval its atypically progressive leanings, which admittedly piqued my interest, but the movie doesn't escape its Bollywood trappings entirely: the title character (Deepika Padukone) is a senior-level architect who's good friends with his colleague Syed, whose own friend Rana (Irrfan Khan) runs a taxi business that is constantly patronized (and terrorized) by Piku for her morning commute, and her father Bhashkor (Amitabh Bachchan) is a retired 70-year-old hypochondriac living with and taken care of by her daughter who groans constantly about his constipation problems to everyone around him and who is looking to sell his family house (closer to a mansion than a commonplace bungalow) in Kolkata. In other words this is a decidedly upper-middle-class world, however quirky and endearing it may be (and it truly is both), and given India's crippling poverty rate I doubt I'm the only one that needs more convincing when Hindustan Times praises the movie's "realistic view of a typical Indian family." (Another telling moment is when Piku disses her date for not being a fan of Satyajit Ray, though much of the saltiness comes from her getting dumped for talking on the phone about Dad's bowel condition at dinner.)
Also while Piku is indeed a feisty, self-reliant woman (one of the movie's running gags is her father shamelessly telling her potential mates up front about her lack of virginity) one of her parting thoughts near the end of the film (after a personal tragedy, which I won't spoil here but should be easy to guess) is that parents, however irritating they become in old age, should not be judged. That of course shows her deep love for her father, but the implicit preservation of existing hierarchical family structure is clear.
But I really don't mean to sound too critical here, because Piku is a movie and character well worth knowing. All the leads are exceptionally strong, and the story movies along with such verve and levity I was never once bored despite its 2-hour length. And its nearly nonstop humor even at its most scatological doesn't feel formulaic. This was one of the few Bollywood films I've seen and if there are many more Hindi gems like this I should be a fan for life. Highly recommended.
AS is really neither pro- nor antiwar but rather about the weariness of war, so looking into Kyle's untimely death would've served no real purpose.
I didn't care for the gleeful cartoonish violence of some of the action scenes, which reminds one of Tarantino at his most infantile and irresponsible, and of course Vaughan is nowhere near as stylish. A barely passable popcorn flick.

Duel, one of Spielberg's earliest films. If I had a car, that film would put me off driving down deserted highways for life!
Great film,if a little unrealistic. I mean,trucks are normally stuck to a strict schedule and don't have time for that sort of horseplay...
You Don't Know Jack (2010). Great late performance by Al Pacino,too bad it was ineligible for the Oscars...

Thats one of the most beautifully produced and amazing action movies ever made. Let me know when you see something with that level of detail to it.

Pales in comparison to the original Jurassic Park, which still counts as a classic and is many times better than any of its sequels.

I agree. I was super excited to see it and was pretty underwhelmed. They could've done so many different and cool things with the movie.
On Netflix I watched a Mexican film "The Perfect Dictatorship" or in Spanish, "La dictadura perfecta". I enjoyed it. It was one of the better films I've seen the last few months.

They really stuff the timing up with release too if they had a propaganda message to tell. They should have waited until like June of next year and got the pro-Republican benefits of it for the upcoming elections.

I agree. I didn't even find it that enthralling while watching it even. It was just too silly and really averagely done - especially the script. Nothing about it was memorable imo.

Considering people are walking around to this day saying "what a day, what a wonderful day", I think there was a lot that was memorable about it.
The entire concept of how the culture was created and how they would gladly sacrifice themselves for Valhalla, and spray their faces with chrome before death stuck out to most people.
The Sandstorm scene which was simply unreal stuck out to me.
The final battle on the pogo sticks that was actually done in real life was incredible.
The guitar player with fire coming out of his guitar - epic.
Hey not everyone needs edge movies that are creative. I'm sure many Mad Max haters loved Jurassic Park.

The movie deals with:
1. Migration - throughout history, people migrated to places where they can have security. (last year at least 80,000 people applied for asylum in Sweden. 25,000 so far this year).
2. Natural resources - today people kill for oil. There will come a time when people will kill for water.
3. Power - people in power will do anything to keep their power by subjugating or eliminating the competition.
4. Feminism - why is there war? is it because men get to decide everything? Will a society ruled by women become less chaotic.
5. symbolism and metaphors - the movie is littered with it.
All in all, it wasn't that bad....

Ok, movies this past two months....
I watched Boyhood. Again. It changes every time. If it rains, i might watch it for the fourth time this weekend.
Also saw another ethan hawke vehicle, dead poets society. First time. I was too cool for school when it came out and i never got into it until now, watching it with my eldest. Heavier lifting than I had planned. Great fun talking about it with lax sticks in hand.
Also saw Food, Inc. and Fast food nation. Fast food nation (linklater) ran along with boyhood. Some of the same dialogue, almost! Man, Food, Inc. is just depressing.
Saw. Few minutes of Swingers and Blazin' Saddles. Mel Brooks is so money.
