What will Nike do next???

Finally, it’s done deal and move on to next.
What will Nike do next?
There are so many things which can happen in this year.
Next will be Nadal and Sharapova.
Probably sharapova will stay with whatever money Nike will offer but Nadal might want close to Federer’s uniqlo deal which might not happen from Nike.

Hope that Nike and fed will continue to have the relationship through shoe contract but his agent might not make the deal easily then it might go into very nasty battle for RF logo too.
Best thing for both sides might be Nike and fed reach the agreement to have Nike shoe contract then releasing RF logo to Federer (not uniqlo). It won’t be easy decision from Nike side since RF logo might take away Tennis apparel market shares from uniqlo.

Honestly I want to see entire new Nike Tennis division within two years.
Product development should be a priority for them.
If Nadal asks a ridiculously overpaying deal, Nike should let him go too.
I was surprised to see Federer with Uniqlo today but at the same time, I have some excitements instead of sadness.

Yeah, I don't know what they'll do, to be honest. This is a black day for tennis.

They did well with the Vapor X. Hopefully the zoom zero is good as well. Get back to making good shoes.

I don't think Nike is investing in their tennis division as much cause the sport has been stagnant. Tennis is not as popular as it was five years ago, a lot of is cause lack of new stars and champions. Also the sport has taken a hit due to match fixing and gambling. Federer leaving has to do with return, he is not a sales generator like Lebron, or Ronaldo to justify the money he wanted. Federer does not have that cross-over appeal to sell to regular people. People in tennis tournaments wear his apparel but he does not cross in everyday life.

Great comments. I agree a complete overhaul of Nike tennis would the best case scenario. Less of a European influence and a return to the glory days of their 90s lines with high quality fabrics and aggressive styling at a better price point. Some of the NikeCourt line has been a step in the right direction.

Maybe it's my relative lack of age showing, but the Nike designs of the 90s were atrocious with some exceptions here and there. Some of the 70s stuff were timeless though.

Nike couldn't care less about tennis.......otherwise Federer would still be there with them.

They are going the Adidas route. No big names, just lot's of names.

Expect a split, or a taking down of Nadal as well.....once his contract is up as well.

The market share for tennis is 4% or 20 billion a year of the total global sport industry of $500 billion a year. This includes everything from equipment, tickets, prize money to clothing and shoes. Four percent is a small number. The tennis athletic clothing and shoes industry is probably a 400 to 600 million dollar industry per year. When you divide it up by the various competition, you get a market share that is very low.

Uniqlo is taking a loss on signing Roger Federer at 30 million a year. That is a lot of tennis clothes you have to sell to cover your cost. This is more of a marketing move to get attention to their brand.

That's because they don't rely on him to sell tennis clothes, which they don't even produce, but the rest of their products. They are a USD 14 billion yearly sales company, and very profitable too, so I trust their ability to run their numbers more than anyone posting on this forum.

Do a lot of you guys own Nike stock or something?

I bought Nike tennis apparel about a decade ago. It didn't hold up and I haven't bought it since. Has the quality improved?

The quality is sh1t lol

I have some shirts from 2011/2012 and they’re good but the newer ones from 2013 onwards are awful

This!
It's not about tennis clothing at all, it's about Roger's image of down-to-earth family guy.

I hope Nike never releases the RF logo. That RF logo has zero appeal for broad audiences. Most tennis players themselves, including FedFans wouldn't really wear RF branded items, it's just too personal.

Uniqlo being a wider apparel company should be able to do much better things than Nike with someone like Fed.

People saying Nike doesn't care about tennis by letting Fed go is moronic. Nike clearly didn't want to touch a 10yr/$300M deal. I can't blame them. Fed is maybe going to play for two more years. Uniqlo will be paying him for an additional 8, which is crazy. And at the current moment they're still able to produce gear with the RF logo and not have to pay anything for it. Sounds like a win-win to.
I really wish that Fed had stayed with Nike too, but it's 2018, life is a business. Nike made a business decision.

It may be in decline in the US but it’s doing great everywhere else. I must say Uniqlo looks a thousand times better than his Nike gear.

Fed fans make me feel uneasy, his fans and his base is more like a cult. The rate this forum is going Federer is going to be crowned Mein Fuhrer.

Well done, you just scored a Godwin point. There always comes a point in an argument when the losing side makes a reference to facism to end it.

I am not a blind Fed fan. I have tremendous respect for his achievements and is the best player I have ever seen. But there are a few things about him that grate me at times. Nonetheless, I feel compelled to point that large multinational like Nike and Uniqlo do things for a reason, and I trust their business rationale and sense more than I trust baseless speculation / assumptions articulated by people who have clearly not spent a day in their life in business.

We don't need to go back there.

Bulging crotches showcased in glittering gold and hairy chests can stay in the 70's.

Well I said some, not all.

Some of the 90s kits and shoes that this forum seems to love are classic dad clothes and dad shoes.

If the resident TTW design experts had their way, Fed would be dressed like this at Wimbledon:

enhanced-21609-1457116374-10.jpg

  1. Shorts reaching the knees? Check
  2. Timeless (read: out of time) shoe design? Check
  3. Classy belt? Check
  4. Simple white thick cotton polo as opposed to garbage thin poly crew / henley? Check
