Where would you have a 5th Slam?

If there is ever a 5th Slam (quite probable when you think of expansion) what surface would you want it to be on and where?

For surface I would strongly suggest indoor carpet which would become the fastest of the Slams.

As for the location, you'd think it Russia would be the perfect spot for time zone as it would be 7 hours ahead of ET in comparison to 6 for the French and 5 for Wimbledon. They also have numerous indoor courts due to climate.

An added question would be what time of year and I'd suggest October.

Russia is quite a crappy place for the 5th major, quickly locking up to become another North Korea.

My vote goes to Canada (indoors) or Africa / Asia / South America (outdoors).

It has to be a place that already has strong tennis support. It also has to be a surface that has a masters title, at least a couple of 500 titles, and some 250s to warm up the qualifiers and the top players.

For those reasons, I'd choose Argentina. South America. The surface would be clay.

They already have the infrastructure. South/Central America already has the golden swing. It would be ready to go.

Surface should be grass or indoors hard. The tour already has enough of the big clay/HC tournaments. The slam should be in Asia, preferably China.

Simple: Indoors tournament in Shanghai, in place of the outdoor MS. And add a grass MS tourney in place of Shanghai, maybe Halle?

I think it would be a big mistake to bring on a 5th Slam. Hypothetically speaking, though, I'd vote for indoor carpet in Central Eastern Europe.

1000% agree, but I would go with Hamburg converting to grass to become the new grass 1000 and keep Halle/Queens as 500s. They are just getting the bump to 500 now, too soon to give one a 1000 nod. Hamburg has been 500 for a long time and previously held 1000 designation. Plus with Stuttgart going grass and the success Halle is seeing, its conceivable all of Germany will follow suit to convert to grass.

i will go with asia. Indoor carpet and fast. there are enough slow slams now that tailor just to defensive baseliners.

Clay slam in March in Rio

Another clay slam is fair, no?... to match 2 hard court slams.

:):):)

I like the current 4 Slams the way they are, but just for kicks...

South America would be a logical location but the problem is that would likely be another clay court Slam. No reason it has to be, but I can't imagine it wouldn't be.

What about the Czech Republic? I think it's terribly underrated as a "tennis nation". Isn't tennis the 2nd most popular sport there after football? There's also the history there in terms of great players produced, especially on the women's side. Problem with this idea, though, is it would be the 3rd Grand Slam in Europe. I like the idea of globalizing the Grand Slams more.

Why would you have a fifth SLAM? Does nobody understand the meaning of the term, "Grand Slam?" A Grand Slam means FOUR. It wouldn't be a "slam" anymore if you added a 5th major.

India, cow dung. Preferably outdoors. If it's going to be indoors, I would suggest a state-of-the-art ventilation system.

Promote IW, the tournament already feels like a slam, I mean they already have all the infrastructure already in place and Larry Ellison's deep pocket.

Sports like Football have world cup once in four years. Tennis? Four times in one year!

Instead of adding more, put proper spacing between slams, and enough preparation tournaments.

no, but djokovic would win it that's why I said it

ok seriously do you think there could ever be an indoor hardcourt slam? and which country would you like to have it in?

I think it would be a big mistake to add another Slam.
If there is to be a indoor Grand Slam, I think it has be big enough for over fifteen thousand spectators. I don't know if there's one in the world at this moment.

I actually think your right. Adding another slam would be a mistake. We need to stick to the tradition of having 4 slams a year. With 5 slams as well we wouldn't be able to compare player A with player B, because player A played with 5 slams a year and player B played with 4 slams a year. Due to them not playing in the generation

Indoor hardcourt yes and I agree with the Asian choice, Japan would be better than China though, I mean they have more players, Nishikori of course but also other decent players like Soeda, Ito...

Europe already got 2 slams, don't need a third.

Actually the best would be to replace Wimbledon with a Indoor hardcourt grand slam, so the number of GS would remain 4 and grass would disappear - but of course that will never happen :)

I was actually going to suggest Japan. Japan has some tennis history dating back to the early 1900's when they had a handful of competitive players.

China, or Spain.

But as tipsa said, there are two slams in Europe, so having a 5th Slam in Asia would be great...

Why would you want grass to disapear?

Because this surface is not relevant anymore, 2nd week of Wimbledon it becomes like a potatoe field, players slip and can get injured (Del Potro 2013) I am surprising this year nobody got injured despite all these players slipping.

+ except at Wimbledon nobody play on grass except Karlovic, Groth and Mahut

+ a 4th grand slams indoors would have a massive advantage, no rain delay.

India? With so many r.ape cases there, I am sure the WTA ladies would feel really safe.

Maybe a wood surface slam?

NO! NO! NO! and NOOOOOOOO!

We don't need 5th slam. We don't want 5th slam. It would just devalue current slams, make them less special and mess up all records and history books. It would be terrible.
So no 5th slam is needed nor wanted.

There will never be a fifth slam. Someone could add a tournament with the appropriate prize money, ranking points and rules but it wouldn't be the same.

The obvious answers would be an indoor slam in China or a clay slam in Spain.

Easy: Just bump-up WTF points, so that players get 240pts for each RR win, 480pts for SF win, and 800pts for F win. Then the undefeated SF/F/W points would be 720/1200/2000, similar to slams. Then they could also have 5-set matches in SFs/F IMO.

There has been talk that they want the Indian Wells tournament to become a 5th GS. They have the money and the infrastructure with the tennis courts and a new stadium.

That already happened when people started counting GSs as equal titles, players started to care less about Davis Cup, stopped all the late night partying drink drugs and sex and actually started turning up to the Australian.

I say we have it played on ice in Canada with the players playing on ice skates.....yup I'd pay to watch Serena Williams on ice skates

Seriously....do we need to do this discussion again?!?!
