Im ordering some black colored strings from TW:

http://www.tennis-warehouse.com/accessoriespage.html?CREF=71

Which is the softest? I want it soft because it will be used as crosses with Technifibre red code 18 poly in the mains. Also need to last (if possible) as long as the red code, so should I go for 16 or 17 gauge?

Gamma Marathon DPC 17

Gamma TNT2 17 (or 16)

Head RIP Control 17 (or 16)

Prince Lightning XX 17 (or 16)

Prince Synthetic Gut 16 Duraflex

Wilson Extreme 16 Synthetic Gut

Thats all I can find on TW, what else is out there?

not one of your choices, but here it goes
Forten Nylon, one of the softest strings i have, good for crosses, also very cheap, got it from TW, i got the 16g, i wish i got the 17g, would have played better on some hybrids

Yeah the forten is pretty soft. Good for saving money in a poly hybrid like the PRC hybrid you plan on using. It is also fairly durable in a cross. I believe there is a 15L gauge of this. Thats probably your best bet for durability. It will probably break before the PRC, but the PRC will probably be dead by that time anyway.

You may also want to try Pro Supex Synthetics. Maxim touch, Titan, and Spiral Flex are all good soft crosses. And i think they all come in black. Just remember that thicker gauges are your friend if you want it to be durable. Google pro supex and its the URL ending in Depot plus.

Agree, the forten nylon is pretty soft (but I don't like it so much). Also, I don't believe the nylon comes in a 17g...

I know this is not "technically" black, BUT the Pro Supex Titan syn gut is a dark charcoal grey and is very soft.

Technifiber's 515 used to come in black. I think some of TF's strings may still come in black, but you'd have to find out for sure.

This stuff works great as a cross string... especially when combined with a poly or kevlar main.

im planning on using this on my next racquet i think, mains - topspin cyberflash 17g @ 56lbs, crosses - forten nylon 16g @ 56lbs, this should soften up the string bed pretty nice and the greyish white with black contract color should look good too, double bonus

Ok thanks guys for all the replies. Forten Nylon sounds like a nice and cheap option. I will give it a try.

btw between Prince Synthetic Gut 16 Duraflex and Gamma TNT2 16, which plays softer?

Ashaway Liberty nylon is black and very soft. Cheap, plays well, and is fairly durable. All in all a decent bargain for a buck fitty.

Sweet 17

Gauge: 17G/1.25mm

Our sweetest sweet spot! This is Forten’s most playable synthetic gut hands down. The unique, specially formulated bonding process employed in the manufacturing of our SWEET 16 is used in the development of this thinner gauge string, resulting in increased energy return to the ball and an even livelier response without loss of tension.

here is the site if anyone is interested on the full lineup from forten

Sweet 17 is their synthetic gut (which TW sells here as "Forten Synthetic Gut," The nylon is a different line, and plays completely differently (IMO). The Sweet is a ... well, sweet string, though!

(It's well on the cheap side, too. One of my favorite cross strings, although I never bother to stock it )
