ronaldo not even top five ever, while messi been already top three before world cup and now only cementing that spot after winning, imho hes top two, its only between him and maradona should be honestly, pele is third, despite three world cups (talking about better not greater)

Maradona may not have a WC if he didn't handball.

RS is right, Ronaldo is always in the discussion surely but he won’t win it with Messi now

That being said he is easily the 2nd greatest footballer I’ve ever seen… can’t speak to Pele… but his unreal longevity, clutch goals, ludicrous numbers, and general consistency are unmatched by anyone prior to him. Pele, Di Stefano, Maradona have nowhere near the club resume Ronaldo does, or the longevity, or the consistency

did messi or pele did something similar at world cup what diego did after that goal, four or five minutes after iirc, answer is no, so this is all about how epic he was, i mean both of those episodes

Epic dribble to score but who knows if how it would have gone in golden goal taking away that anything can happen.

I actually like Ronaldo a lot because he is such a great athlete. But I don’t watch enough modern day futbol to know where he stands in the greater scheme of things in the current game.

It’s quite interesting to read what @NeutralFan mentioned about how much of a gap has opened up between Messi and Ronaldo now in futbol terms.

I’ve been watching a lot more US NFL and college football nowadays instead of world futbol, but there are some players I might start following again in the world game.

It’s no debate after what happened last night.
It's no debate in your opinion, but people will keep debating so it doesn't really matter does it? And then in 20 years there will be someone else, because great players love chasing/breaking records, proving people wrong. And the cycle continues, forever...

Messi, but Curry should be 2nd in the poll. Got his first finals MVP, and 4 championships tying with Shaq and LeBron
I think it's a close second between Curry and Nadal. Curry getting his 4th championship with his first finals MVP bascially made him a clear top 10 player ever, while Nadal's 2 majors, double career slam, and holding the slams record were both massive additions for their legacies.

Messi is number one for me in this one, this WC title basically cemented his status as the clear GOAT of football

It does, but between the set of people asked in the poll - it’s Messi who made the most of 2022.

The invalidity of comparing an individual sport accomplishment to a team sport accomplishment is so apparent when you honestly have to say a WC was not earned by either Messi or Mbappe until after they had converted their final plays in the tournament. Messi had to rely on a keeper to make a stop and a Frenchman to miss target while three teammates beat Lloris.

Had the WC result been reversed, I would think no less of Messi as a player and what he accomplished in 2022. Had either Nadal or Djokovic lost slam finals they would not have polished the luster on their careers.

Son, i am not much in to basketball but can you tell me why Some people think Curry is better than Lebron?
In the short term who is currently a better player, it’s pretty unanimous that Curry is better - he just won a title and finals MVP and has been averaging 30-6-6 on incredible efficiency this season, while LeBron is 38 and has struggled with injury/consistency since his ankle injury in 21. In football terms it’s like saying Benzema is currently better than Cristiano, he just won Ballon D’or and CL. Curry is better than Benzema all time but similar idea.

To say Curry is better all time than LeBron is a pretty strong statement, it’s definitely not common and even his biggest fans probably wouldn’t say it.

Short argument for it: Curry is 3-1 in the NBA finals vs LeBron and won two MVPs in LeBron’s prime of 2015/16. This is disingenuous for a number of reasons but that’s why people say it.

Longer argument for it is more complex, centering around how Steph’s shooting has changed the league, his efficiency numbers and offensive impact giving space to his teammates, etc.

but you’d have to be pretty delusional to actually argue curry is better due to the context of those wins (LeBron’s entire team was injured in 2015, curry’s was healthy + Curry added the 3rd best player in the league in KD after losing to LeBron in 2016) and LeBron’s significantly better career achievements and size/defense

messi is the obvious answer.
Nadal, Messi, and Brady all had the wildest "debate enders" I've seen.

Nadal ended the Fedal debate with his AO 2022 win coming back from a huge deficit to win #21 and double career slam (passing Fed in both)

Messi ended the debate with Ronaldo and Maradona when he led Argentina to the WC last week, winning his 2nd golden ball en route too

Brady ended the debate with Manning and Montana in the 2017 SB when he overcame a huge 28-3 deficit to win his record 5th SB and 4th SBMVP
