Who are Fed’s best friends on tour?

My hunch is that he really likes Delpo, Dimitrov, and Thiem.

Doesn’t he have Delpo and Thiem in his sports management group?

Federer is much older than these guys and serves more as mentor/older brother, to the younger guys even a father figure.

I know I'm a fanboi but one of the things I really like about him is how he provides mentorship and guidance to the kids, he really cares about the sport.

As far as friends goes - from his gen idk, Tommy Hass? Stan? Seems just as likely to just hang out with his wife, Anne Wintour, Serena, etc.

Chiudinelli....

then Stan, but after the Mirka incident I'm not sure if they're still really close...

then Haas, they've known each other for years....

then Djokovic, of course.

Here's the truth. Federer is a billionaire with 4 kids and a mountain of endorsements and events to look after.

I think his best friend by a country mile is his wife. On tour I think even his strongest friendships are more acquaintance based. Obviously from his 78-82 generation Tommy Haas pops out (he's tournament director at Indian Wells to boot now and Federer apparently has some property in Palm Springs although that's more local rumors).

I think the Nadal friendship is over-blown at this point. They did a lot of events at one point and he was around during the academy opening but that's really more business than friendship. Of currently active ATP players it's got to be Wawrinka. I know there was that spat but common now. They've played together for well over a decade and at various points have shared deep runs at the same tournament, as well Wawrinka tends to stick around some tournaments even after losing.

Federer on Friends on Tour

The crop is pretty low to begin with really. I suspect he'd hang out with Dimitrov if Grigor was a better performer and went deeper in tournaments.

Marco Chiudinelli was one of RF's closest friends on tour from like the 12s or something. I think also Yves Allegro?
Like some have already mentioned, Fed came on tour when most of todays generation was barely toilet trained. His true long time player friends have all retired.

Probably Luthi and Ljubes.

He and Stan are not as close as people think they are. I think he and Tim are good friends.

Closest has to be childhood buddy Marco Chuidinelli.

He was close to Hrbaty and Niemenen if I remember correctly. Later Tommy Haas. Mirnyi was doubles partner and good friend.

Gets along well with Haase, Kohlie, Monfils, Tsonga

In his younger days he got along really well with most of the northern European players and the French from what I remember reading.

Forgot about Chuidinelli but given his comparatively meager income and limited results I think that's more of an off-season things now. It happens.

gotcha.

He's what, 12, 13 younger? Hard to call him a friend, more like a mentee

I think they've bonded a bunch due to Laver Cup the last few years. And they've practiced a lot together at tourneys before that as well. And Dom is by far classier than Zverev, Kyrgios, or anyone else from that group.

On the tour, it's Stan. Stan has said that Federer is the player he's closest to on the tour and I think the feeling's mutual.

Fed has a lot of respect for Nadal and would probably consider him a friend. However, he's also said that he doesn't think they can really be all that close while they're still playing and still rivals.

I agree with above about other obvious ones like Mirka, Luthi and Haas.

We've got to remember that not only is Fed one of the oldest guys and the tour, but he's a family man with 4 kids. He's likely not looking to make loads of new friends on the tour, though he seems to be friendly with everyone and supportive of the younger guys.

Speaks German too (Zverev too but Thiem specifically mentioned it)

Roger lives an entirely different lifestyle than almost everyone on tour and is too old to connect with the younger generations in a meaningful way. There also aren't many other Swiss players. In other words, he does not have true friends on tour anymore.

Borderline dementia, clearly. Talks fragmented, balds, forgets to zip every now and then. Soon he'll start touching his private parts on court.

Still healthy enough to raise the ELO numbers for Lou's ND goat case, though.

This is getting betterer and betterer :alien:

Do you know many 38 year olds who are legitimate friends with 20-25 year olds? I'm not saying Roger isn't a mentor to some young players but a friend in the traditional sense? Definitely not.

Last time I checked, the tour wasn't lacking old geezers. Plenty of the guys have been on the same tour as Roger for 10-15 years!

I guess none of them are friends in the traditional sense. They are colleagues (and competitors), so I rather think they are friends in the same way as you are with you co-workers in an office/ company. You're not getting along with everyone, but to my experience, age is not the most important thing in getting along well with people around you.

Norman

Not sure if he has friends per say, but more professional associates that he's close and comfortable with such as rafa, novak, stan, pouille, haas, verdasco

Then there are the younger players that he's more of like a professional uncle I guess to? like Zverev, kyrgios, thiem, shapo, edmund, sock, bencic

I thought of Henman when you said Tim. In fact they got along pretty well. Annacone was Timmy’s coach until the latter retired and then he came joined the Fedexpress family wagon.

Mentor* that's the word.

I think the way Federer carries himself is quite professional and he is old compared to the other peers on the tour. But you can tell from his interviews that the players he does like, he compliments. Zverev and Nick Kyrgios come to mind

What Mirka incident? And honestly, I think Federer is a family man now and outside of them he doesn't seem close to anyone. Not Nadal in my opinion, esp. with the comments he made recently about playing in pain.

Fed has no friends on the current tour. As others have mentioned, Haas and Chuidinelli were close to him when younger, but both are retired.

He likes Dom, Dimi, Goffin and Kohli but they're not "friends." Annacone has mentioned that Fed's friends are all people he and Mirka jointly know and most are in Switzerland. Roger addresses that point too in his 2017 GQ cover article. As a competitive athlete always on the go, he has no time or inclination for friends on the tour anymore and has said as much. He's in a completely different spot in his life than up and coming guys like Zverev or Thiem. Married, four kids, worldwide commitments and he's 17 years older than someone like Zverev.

He was and is close to Nieminen. Not childhood friends but close from juniors where they played dubs as a pait and both born in -81.

It speaks volumes that Federer played against Nieminen in his farewel exho in Helsinki in 2015, wouldn’t do that with everyone, especially since they were completely different caliber players. I was lucky to witness it live since I’m..wait for it...FINNISH
