They have somewhat similar peak career achievements, 2 Grand Slams each, both winning 1 in 2012 and 1 in 2013.

Azarenka has held the number 1 spot and defended a Grand Slam, Murray has Olympic gold, DC and the best of the Slams.

Both had their peak years in 2012/3 in terms of winning the biggest titles and neither has reached those levels since.

Both players have dominant all time greats to deal with to get there.

Pro's for Azarenka:
- She only has 1 all time great in the way (plus Sharapova) instead of 3.
- She is 2 years younger.
- All 3 of her matches against Serena Williams this year have gone the full distance.

Pro's for Murray:
-He has had a far better 2015 season than Azarenka and starts 2016 ranked number 2.
-He is less likely to be upset before the final stages of a Slam
-He has actually beaten Djokovic this year.

So who is more likely to reach number 3?

Mate Murray is ranked #2 & Azarenka is ranked #22...who do you think is more likely of the 2 to win their 3rd Slam...obviously anything can happen but not rocket science in regards to who is "most likely".

Biggest issue with that is Azarenka is like 8 years younger than Serena Williams while Murray and Djokovic are the same age.

Anyway this years WTA US open champion certainly wasn't ranked number 2.

She didn't go past QF's this year...there are 21 women on tour who are technically "more favored" to win a Slam than her.

Of course it doesn't always go that way but you asked who is more likely....

Murry , if he managed to find 2012 and 13 form.

I think they are both about at the same level for getting a third. Edge to Azerenka as her main competitor will be a faltering, broken down, bone on bone... Serena. While Murray will be dealing with a prime Djock.

Azarenka, because she doesn't have a mental block against the current dominator of her sport.
Yes she does. She had 3 match points earlier this year but blew them. One of them was a double fault!

I still went with Azarenka. Murray can't beat Djokovic at slams and even Federer it seems so until they leave it's a no. Vika will get a few years of slam chances when Serena goes but Murray is the same age as Novak

Pennetta was in the 20s when she won the US Open. Once Serena is out of a slam then Vika would be one of the next best favourites. I think I saw that she has similar odds for 2016 AO as Sharapova.

Arguments for Murray

Has the potential to beat them all.

Arguments for Azarenka

Has the potential to beat everyone

Murray. He will win two of the next three slams.

Who is this Azarenka BTW? and why she is getting compared with Andy? It does sound disrespectful..

This is immaterial. I can easily see Vika winning more majors than Andy

Azarenka but I'm pretty sure both will. She will be disappointed if she doesn't at least double up on her total.

You can't consider her current ranking as an indicator because she has been building it back from a long injury layoff (and the draw gods were not kind to her while doing so, resulting in earlier exits/slower build back). I don't know if she will ever regain her previous slam winning form, but I do expect her to wi nat least one more, and probably several. At her best she was better than everyone but Serena. The only ones close to her were Sharapova and Kvitova, but she was more consistent and had a better record vs Serena.

I think Murray could win another one or two, I just think her chances are better.

Not saying for a single second that Vika's Slam winning days are completely behind her but in a poll of who is "more likely" to win their 3rd Slam first...answer has to be Murray every day of the week.

Well murray has beaten djoko before in both of his slam wins.
Azarenka is 0-10 vs serena in slam matches.
If murray and aza both face off against their nemesis i'm definetly going with muzza

No doubt WTA fields beyond Serena are as open as fat mans fridge door but even still Vika's 2015 form & performances haven't exactly been to a comparable level of Murray's.

Of course anything can happen but in a hypothetical "more likely" debate, even the smallest amount of logic will hand it to Murray hands down.

I am willing to bet with you on this. Let us revisit in 2017

Seems a bit of an odd thing to say when he won both his Slam titles by beating Djokovic!

And when Azarenka hasn't beaten Serena at a Slam lol. And she's further behind in her recovery from injury

Exactly...I'm sure Azarenka has deep runs left in her & possibly even a Slam or two, based on the question of "most likely" though it's a no contest!
Surely everyone would agree that Azarenka winning another Slam before Murray at this point in time would be at longer odds than the reverse!

The chances for both of winning their 3rd looks solid. Who's gonna win first? I dont know how fit Azarenka is going into the 2016 season but if she is healthy i'd put her chances of winning the Oz Open slighly higher than Murray, who might be distracted by Kim's impending labor. At Roland Garros and US Open, id give Murray a very slight edge. At Wimbledon, Murray with a huge advantage.

I'll pick Azarenka by a very slim margin since i like her chances more in the upcoming Oz Open (provided shes healthy).

Great question & a close one. I'm leaning Azarenka, but not familiar with her recent form. I like Andy, so I would rather him win the 3rd first, but Azarenka seems slightly more likely.

Murray's going to end up with 9+ slams when all is said and done, so definitely him.
