I think the nextgen are much worse than fed's so called weak generation. So I picked the highest ranked member of the next gen and created this thought experiment

I agree with coria and gaudio. henman ppl are underestimating. he was actually a tough opponent even for the top 5. i think henman would beat zverev more times than not. moya would trash zverev most of the time

Gaudio, Coria, Henman, and he'd have a good advantage on Roddick.

Federer would destroy him as he destroyed everyone back then, Hewitt and Agassi would counter his metronomic game, Safin and Nalbandian have the unpredictable firepower to beat him when they're in form.

You sure bro? Federer is playing better than ever in 2018/2019 and Zverev owned him last time they played.

2004-2009 baby Fed shouldn’t be a problem for nextgen Titan Zverev.
Zverev will beat 2004 Fed no doubt about that, but the titles says comfortably and consistently. ;)

roddick would win most of the time with his serve and forehand. zverev would consistently beat henman on clay, but not on other surfaces. henman's serve and volley made it tough even for the top 5 of that time. zverev isn't used to hitting good passing shots.

Gaudio, Coria and i would put a strong argument for Nalbandian.

Don't know why people are so sure he would beat Henman, he was a LOT better than his record shows and i think his serve and volley and net play would completely own Zverev.

What advantage over Roddick? Seriously?

Roddick could slice and Zverev wouldn't punish it. Then when he gets an easy forehand he wrecks it. Rinse, repeat. Roddick on clay he probably beats yeah, but off clay he goes like 1-9 in every 10 matches or so, and 0-10 on grass.
Agreed that Roddick would own Zverev on grass, but on HC it's a different story, Zverev would punish Roddick's haphazard net approaches and pin him behind the baseline with his depth of shot. Roddick lacks the baseline variety and accuracy of Federer, Safin, Nalby, who would hurt Zverev from the baseline.
I'd put Zed a 60-40 favorite on hard. Roddick could still win by overpowering him with serve+forehand, but for most HC matches I'd take Sascha's consistency. Zverev would crush on clay and Roddick would crush on grass.

its the same story on hard courts. roddick would own zverev at us open and the hard court masters with his serve and forehand, and his net approaches weren't that bad, it would work against a player with crappy passing shots such as zverev. on hard courts, just like grass, roddick would win most of the time by overpowering zverev with his serve and forehand. 2004 roddick took federer to a tough four set battle on grass and won a major the year prior on us open. roddick>>zverev

Yeah, you're right. Off clay he'd be able to beat Moya pretty comfortably

I mean, 2004 wasn't one of Moya's better years. He just about held on to a top ten ranking but that was in large part thanks to high seedings. The 2005 slide was already looking likely. He played much better in 2002 and 2003 (and 1998, of course).

Actually, he did start 2004 well. But it all went downhill from the summer onwards.

Hmm good point. I’d say 60-40 in Zverev’s favour. 04 Fed might win 1-2 matches on grass or fast HC if his serve is clicking.

If anyone honestly believes this then he/she is absolutely re--****ed and yes I know your comment was sarcastic/facetious.

99-1 in Fed's favour lol.

Did you see what Raonic just did to Zverev at the AO an he is a poor man's Roddick.

Roddick would own Zverev everywhere outside of clay.

Roddick's approaches were mainly a thing exploited by Federer. It was often just a desperation move after losing multiple points in a row, not a consistent part of his strategy. He likely wouldn't even do them enough for Zverev to take advantage.

A-Rod was accused of being a ball-basher back in the day, but he's downright Federer-esque in his variety compared to most of the players Sascha is used to facing these days.

Roddick was a quality ball bashers. Quality ball bashing is underrated.

Roddick loved being behind the baseline lol. He's a grinder with a mediocre forehand, don't see him winning the majority against Roddick on HC.

Safin, Moya, Henman, Coria and Gaudio.

2004 Federer is the only player I'm convinced would regularly beat Zverev. Zverev in top form would certainly score victories against the rest and keep the H2H close.

Who voted Roddick? Dude has a Slam title and a RU plus several SF on hc. What does Zverev have????

In bo5 roddick in straight sets.

EDIT

Zverev only has a chance in bo3 obviously.

Some of this is all match ups too. Most of it is match ups actually. I voted Henman, Coria, and Gaudio for the record. Coria and Gaudio on HC are pretty obvious, and I think Henman would get passed a lot on anything that's not grass. Maybe not, but it's a gut feeling. Zverev would score wins over a few others though. He could keep it close (or beat) Moya and Nalbandian, and score a few wins on Roddick and Safin, and old Agassi in BO3. Hewitt would be a terrible match up for him IMO, and he obviously can't lace 2004 Federer's tennis shoes.

So in summary, the only guys he beats consistently and comfortably are those 3 IMO, but it's not like he'd get killed by the others outside Federer, and probably Hewitt.

In BO5 the list shrinks though. He wouldn't beat Roddick anywhere except the French. He's not beating Agassi or Safin at either HC slam either. The others are toss ups.

Roddick’s net approaches were indeed among the dumbest I have ever seen, but Zverev isn’t a great passer either. I doubt that this would be a deciding factor. Roddicks serve and forehand should be enough to beat Ziraffe.

Anyone saying Federer in the poll is having a laugh of course.

Coria probably, assuming it's not clay. Gaudio definitely
