Quite regularly players getting a lot of hype in the earlier stages of their career don't make it to the expected glory. Even more - my opinion is that quite often hype rather damages a career than helps the player. Recieving a lot of early hype might eventually turn out to be a career's Kiss of Death!

A perfect example is of course Richard Gasquet. In the early 2000's, as a youngster, the propects were that he would win "many slams for sure". A lot of folks actually jumped on the bandwagon and lamented for years on forums every time he didn't manage to get past a R16, QF or the like in a slam - whereas that is in fact a pretty decent result...
A more recent example being, of course, Grigor Dimitrov. Though his time window hasn't yet ran out completely, it's getting more and more likely that the Hype Train won't turn out to be very fruitful to him either.

On a lesser scale anyone, except a few Dutchies over here, remember one Thiemo de Bakker? Winner of the Boys Wimbledon tournament in his youth, right now, nowhere to be seen in the ATP top-100 and incapable of even winning his first round in the qualifications...

Lately, a couple of young (and not-so-young) players have received tons of praise (i.e. hype) on this forum because of, indeed, impressive results at minor tournaments, beating a semi-retired former GOAT-candidate, or perhaps even because of pushing the reigning #1 and/or #2 to a TB.

So folks, grab your crystal ball, and vote who you think the next major Victim of the Overhype will be, and poast why you think this sorry candidate will grab this deplorable title in the upcoming year or few years.

;)

You should have restricted poll to the first five options. Half those guys are already washed up journeymen.
Really?

I see plenty posts lately claiming Raonic as a possible Wimbledon winner. Sounds like quite a bit of hype on his shoulders right now.

The rest of them aren't actually 'washed up' either. Goffin has just reached his highest ever ATP ranking.

Maybe add Borna Coric in list? Yes hes absence made us forgot about him but he is also late bloomer as Novak. Similar style, mentality, play style. Who knows?

No, hype on a forum means absolutely nothing. Raonic gets little to no hype in the media or from the ex-pro's. You really think Raonic visits TW and feels pressure when I've made a thread about him??? Please...

Do you really think this thread was made with any intent of actually being serious?

Please...

I see Borna Coric as the hype. Don't see Goffin win anything as well.

Kyrgios, Thiem, Zverev, Raonic , Nishikori will win something substantial.

As soon as he gets back on the track and adds some aggression in hes game yes. I see him also as the one. Although he will never reach further then QF of Wimbledon.

Coric definitely overhyped and will never win anything substantial IMO.

Goffin is a good player but will never beat the Elite players at Majors when everything is on the line.

Janowicz dear lord did this guy fell off the map and completely. Unless he switches back to the Aerostorm, he will never get back to the player he once were.

Dimitrov unless he gets mentally checked, will never go back to the very Top as well.

Dologopolov is immensely talented but pulls the trigger at the wrong time and is highly inconsistent. We've probably seen the best days of Dolgopolov and will only go down from there.

I expect nothing out of Kokkinakis nor Dustin Brown so they won't be overhyped anytime soon.

I do remember De Bakker being decent but yeah hardly a Top 100 Player in recent times.

Also the overhype behind Felip Peliwo was crazy years ago and nowhere to be found this year (Felix Auger Aliasme might have a higher rank than him by the end of the year).

Raonic has already passed through several hype stages. I recall when he first burst onto the scene threads were created which confidently stated that he would sweep all before him because no-one would be able to withstand his serve!

Kyrgios, Thiem and Zverev seem to be the focus of much of the hype at the moment and yet none of them has actually achieved that much yet (Zverev hasn't even won a title yet). They are currently the ones to watch to see if any of them will eventually justify their hype to any extent.

Well, if Djokovic loses earlier, Raonic could certainly benefit. There aren't that many players on the list to possibly win Wimbledon and even though Raonic winning it is a bit of a longshot, he has to be third or fourth favorite. Who would you have as the favorites behind Djokovic and Murray to win Wimbledon?

The Raonic Hype went over the roof again as soon as the JohnnyMac-coach job news came in. :D

Well Thiem's been doing pretty fine lately, reaching #8 ATP (or is it #7 by now?), but the statements of him being the only candidate to beat Djokovic in the near future and of course become #1 are over the top right now imho.
Pretty much agree.

You may well be right, but I can't see either Djok or Muzz lose early at this year's Wimbledon. Also, Raonic appears to be rather injury-prone.
Most of the recent hype is due to McEnroe taking up the coach job imho.

Djokovic and Murray are definitely the two favorites. I'm just saying that if somehow Djokovic does lose early, a guy like Raonic may be able to capitalize.

As for the hype around Raonic because of McEnroe, that is partly true but it's also true that Raonic started out the year playing fabulous tennis at Brisbane and the AO. That match at the AO vs Andy Murray was fantastic until Raonic became injured. Raonic was playing good attacking tennis so that's obviously why he hired McEnroe, i.e to try to continue playing in that style.

Which other players do you see as favorites to win Wimbledon after Djokovic and Murray?

Coric's fading pretty fast. Who knows... maybe he can reinvent himself at some point. Kyrgios made him look pretty JV though...

Which is the higher likelihood for him: wins a major, or his tattoo becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy? ;)

To be fair, Bouchard already achieved more than Kournikova ever did.
Yes, this is true however ever since she reached the Wimbledon final in 2014, she has essentially fallen off the radar as far a serious threat. The hype machine keeps her in the spotlight but a series of first round losses and consistently losing matches by a landslide keep her ranking off the radar (outside of her looks of course).

Whoever next beats a slightly off colour/disinterested Murray/Djokovic/Federer. The media realise tennis is in for a fallow period, and are desperate to hype up anyone who might be able to save the game from the impending abyss, regardless of whether they're actually any good or just a show pony (Dimitrov).

Borna and Theim are blue collar hard working type players. I don't think they'll cave in due to hype.

I could see Krygios losing all focus, partying it up and going on permanent vacation if he won a slam.

Zverev is the real deal. The guy is on point and you can tell he means business.

I guess Coric is out of the question by now, as nobody seems to remember the hype from a few months ago anymore!

Got bamboozled in straights by a fellow nearly twice his age today - Dr. Ivo.
