Quite regularly players getting a lot of hype in the earlier stages of their career don't make it to the expected glory. Even more - my opinion is that quite often hype rather damages a career than helps the player. Recieving a lot of early hype might eventually turn out to be a career's Kiss of Death!
A perfect example is of course Richard Gasquet. In the early 2000's, as a youngster, the propects were that he would win "many slams for sure". A lot of folks actually jumped on the bandwagon and lamented for years on forums every time he didn't manage to get past a R16, QF or the like in a slam - whereas that is in fact a pretty decent result...
A more recent example being, of course, Grigor Dimitrov. Though his time window hasn't yet ran out completely, it's getting more and more likely that the Hype Train won't turn out to be very fruitful to him either.
On a lesser scale anyone, except a few Dutchies over here, remember one Thiemo de Bakker? Winner of the Boys Wimbledon tournament in his youth, right now, nowhere to be seen in the ATP top-100 and incapable of even winning his first round in the qualifications...
Lately, a couple of young (and not-so-young) players have received tons of praise (i.e. hype) on this forum because of, indeed, impressive results at minor tournaments, beating a semi-retired former GOAT-candidate, or perhaps even because of pushing the reigning #1 and/or #2 to a TB.
So folks, grab your crystal ball, and vote who you think the next major Victim of the Overhype will be, and poast why you think this sorry candidate will grab this deplorable title in the upcoming year or few years.
