There have been a lot of "Baby Federers" over the past 10 years; Dimitrov is but the latest. This is because Federer's game is classically beautiful, a combination of old-school values and modern-power necessity. But there have been no "Baby Nadals." Perhaps by forcing the preadolescent Rafa, a natural right-hander, to play tennis left-handed, Nadal's uncle Toni created a Frankenstein's monster. No one else can produce the kind of avalanche topspin and psychedelic sidespin that Nadal offers up with his forehand. Federer has employed an assembly line of southpaws over the years as practice partners, but none have been able to prepare him for Rafa. Add Nadal's revolutionary forehand to his warrior spirit and his obsessive drive to improve, and you have a player like none before.

I don't know how serious or sarcastic this thread is but just think back to when Federer came on to the scene the bounty of comparisons to former greats such as Sampras, Edberg, etc, etc.

Nadal, on the other hand, has not only had no equals (style-wise) since he's been on the scene, but none that came before him.

So yeah. The chances of someone taking on Nadal's style and making it to the big time are thin. Enjoy it while you can, or hate it while you can - either way.

the young players all want to hit super heavy spin. just look at the racket and string forum. the only thing they care about is, is spin.

probably few will use nadals style but I think that extremely heavy spin will become more prevalent.

It's actually because Nadal's style is a dime a dozen so each new pusher on the block isn't instantly associated with him.

Fed's style, however, is trademarked and rather unique. So it's easy to contrast Dimitrov's similarities with him specifically.

I was thinking the same thing the other day. The answer is simple. Federer plays a beautiful game. The only reason Nadal has fans is because he wins. There is nothing exciting about his game that others would say 'wow I want to do that like Nadal'. The only exception to that might be his ball chasing ability.

The only thing I'd want from Nadal's game are his FH passing shots on the run, but then Pete had them too and they were arguably better since he had less recovery time as the courts were faster. As far as athletic ability goes, why would I pick that up from Nadal when I could choose that from Usain Bolt and the likes.

I can't speak for anyone else but I wouldn't want to imitate that, I doubt I have anything close to his endurance for physical pain.

If I was to imitate Federer I'd probably enjoy hitting that backhand all day, even if I did shank them all over the shop. If I tried to imitate Nadal's forehand I'd probably crack my skull open.

And those few juniors, now, that are stylized Baby Nadals are still playing in the 12s to 16s, and it'll be a while yet before they show up to where you'd see them.

A couple of people compared him to Federer merely because he was the only one out of the "young guns" from last generation with a 1hbh. The others being Novak, Murray Berdych, Monfils, and Baghdatis.

No player wins 100% of the matches he plays, but right now he is the player who got the highest percentage of wins, that is a fact, you can't argue with that, HE IS THE BEST!

There are no "baby Nadals" because his style is unorthodox, something that will only come around once or twice in a lifetime, and frankly unattainable for most.

The crazy one sided follow through, using a relatively light stick (for Pros), small grip for you hand size, tiny tight shoes to "feel the court" (yes he's admitted to using a half size small),and a brutal run down and slide attack simply put, would DESTROY THE BODIES OF MOST PLAYERS...and damn well nearly did his knees in for good.

He is great, may eventually be the coveted GOAT..but one thing for sure...UNIQUE!

Fed on the other hand plays fundamental tennis, and did to perfection, and extreme efficiency...so anyone who likewise makes tennis look "easy" will be compared to him.
