Will a single half hitch hold?

When I tied off the cross string of ashway monogut zx (black) the string broke, leaving a single half hitch. What should I do?

And if you GLUE the string to the frame or grommet, acetone will dissolve the super glue. Borrow the clear nail polish from your GF or SO. Or buy your own bottle. That's what guys do in SF. 8-B:confused::happydevil:

please send the racket to me so it can be disposed of safely and properly. It is now dangerous for you to use it. Depending on what racket and string I'll have to deal with the price of service will vary so I can't tell you what the cost will be right now........ :)

lol brand new yonex EZ98+, but you wouldn't want it as I put 3 sticks of hot glue in the handle and a leather grip. I'll take the risk as I've always been a little reckless, but thanks for your concern.

Think I've got some superglue around somewhere... if not I'll borrow my daughter's nail polish. Pink should be fine

Single half hitch will hold. The worry is that it's small enough that it might pull through the grommet.

This would be my concern. The knot itself should hold ok but may pull through the grommet. Not sure the nail polish would prevent that from happening either. At least you just learnt how not to tension a knot for future string jobs. Always a valuable lesson

Nail Polish will be better than Super Glue. Super glue can get into the grommet or frame just saying.

@srimes , I've strung reels and reels of ZX and ZXP. I mostly use 17g ZX these days. I have had ZX break just like you experienced on several occasions. Lately I have no problems if I use a Wilson Pro Knot. With either a DHH or WPK make sure you pull just enough tension for the knot to hold, not to snug up all the spaces. The inherent tension of the ZX will not allow the knot to "unravel." I have had a break in the DHH knot using ZX where it looked like there wasn't enough left hanging out to create tension so I use Bob Smith Industries Insta Cure with a capillary tip to put a tiny bit of clue on the knot surfaces that touch. I haven't had one come undone yet. I also dip the ends of Ash Kev after cutting them to spear points into the Bob Smith Insta Cure immediately wiping the tips off with a discard rag so that the last inch or two becomes comparatively stiff. The super thin viscosity glue instantly permeates the braided Ashaway Kevlar.

Are you short on string so that you can only do a HH?
If the sting is thick (e.g. 1.30mm) and healthy grommet, it will hold.

I tied a double, and as I was tightening it it broke, leaving a single.

No risk of it pulling through the grommet right now as it's a big loop. I was going to super glue it but the risk of getting glue on the grommet is high so I passed on that.

In that case, you have no option but to live with it.
Unless the HH recedes into to grommet, it is likely to hold.
Avoid super glue. More risk than reward.

Zx has weird properties unlike any other type of tennis string. It has low stiffness when stretching the string longitudinally, but very high stiffness when bending.

These properties make it prone to breakage when pulling tension on a knot. They also make it able to hold without slippage with just a single hitch.

These unique properties also earn it the title of ‘King of Crosses’, in my opinion. A soft feeling string for the crosses that stays glassy smooth without denting or notching as it wears (it hardly wears at all, and can be reused many times!).

Hijacking this thread to ask a question about single/double half hitch and poly strings.

I mainly use parnell knot, so forgive me for the potentially stupid question:
Can you cinch each half hitch seperately when doing a 2 half hitch? basically pull the first half hitch taught, and then the second one? This seems like it would be the best knot for pulling tension cause you have the minimal amount of stiff poly string interfering with the pull.

I've done this and it seems to work fine, but may be its not a real 2 half hitch? The seconod loop pretty much looks useless.
