This U.S. Open will mark the 5 year anniversary of an outlier in the domination of the big 3 from the 2005 French until the 2012 U.S. Open.

The epic five set U.S. Open Final that Del Potro snatched from 5 time reigning champion Roger Federer.

Not long after that great victory, Del Potro had to take significant time off due to his wrist. Earlier this year he underwent surgery on his wrist and is still rehabbing in hopes of coming back to form. His last notable Slam run was last year's Wimbledon, losing in five to Djokovic in the semifinal.

IF healthy, can this man win another Slam?

seems longer than five years somehow...idk, certainly deserves one for his quality of play and what he's had to go through, and being a good guy

He deserves to!! with his level of play but I don't think he is consistent enough. And obviously he has a lot of injuries.

He would need a wildcard cakewalk past the semis with the likes of Gonzalez/Federer/Baghdatis awaiting in the final.

I doubt it. I think his time at the top is over. Too many injuries.

I think his earliest show, should his recovery go well, will be next year's USO. At that point the big 4 will be pretty competitive still, while guys like Dimi and Raonic will be all the more experienced. It will be tough but anything can happen

hopefully he's training like crazy while the injuries heal. if he's fit and somehow gets back to his best tennis, he's got a shot. tough for those big guys to make it through 7 matches without breaking down, but we all know he's got the game.

(if healthy)

... That's what I'm worried about. Injuries breed injuries. I hope that he manages to win again and again.

He is the only guy with the day in and day out mentality to live with the big four. He's not afraid of any of them, he doesn't choke (mentally) on the big occasions, and he's got the power to blow anyone off the court when he's in the mood.

Sadly, he's so injury prone, and has such issues physically that I find it hard to believe he'll ever be the consistent top of the game guy that he's capable of being. He also has a generally pretty one dimensional game that he hasn't really built on over the years, and can be quite easily exploited by someone playing well, like Ferrer at Wimbledon in 2012 (Though Delpo obviously got his own back the following year :D) so if another slam DOES come... I think it'll be of the one out of nowhere variety.

LMAO on what planet does Baghdatis dream of coming anywhere near the Berdych tier? Some people...

Berdych 1 slam final.
Baghdatis 1 slam final.

They are in the same tier, only Baghdatis gives his best when he plays all higher ranked player while Berdych gives free pass to one of them.

Hence Baghdatis > Berdych.

So Berdych with 5 years in top 10 is worse than Baghdatis with 1 month in top 10? Berdych has SF+ at every Slam while Marcos has two back in 2006, Berdych has near 40+ QF at Masters while I doubt that Marcos has more than five. :)

I made an eerily similar thread here-http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=502443...

I think he will if he can stay healthy for an extended period of time. He was playing the best tennis I've seen from him since winning in 2009 prior to the wrist injury.

It's pretty sad he has been plagued with injuries as he's the only player who is still relatively young that does not fear the Top 4 at all. The tour needs more players like Del potro

If Stan can win one late in his career then Del Potro certainly can as well...

But it isn't looking good. Even when he was getting better last year he never seemed like he had quite as much pop as when he went on that pretty sick run in 2009.

I still think it's unbelievable that Federer dumped that final to this guy..... still probably the most maddening slam final I've watched.. I could handle him losing to Rafa because that's a tier 1 GOAT.. but Del Potro? WTF? That's like one of those things Rafa fans are going to look back at in a few year and be like: Wow... really.. that Stan loss happened?

Berdych is most certainly the more accomplished and better player overall.
Yet if you asked me (me being a top-guy ranked above Berdych and Bagh), who I would rather see across the net in a big match, say a slam-final, I would say Birdman as he would fold more easily.

As for OP's question -
I most certainly hope so. And if truly healthy, he's in with a chance. The if part is pretty vital though. Sadly.

That was a tremendous win for Delpotro. I am sure Nadal's debilitating abdominal tear and serving 50mph had nothing to do with the match result.
