Will I get really tall?

Hi all,

I am 14 years old and am 176 or so centimetres tall. People tell me I'm really quite tall for a girl. I am still growing, and I'm wondering how tall I will get. Will I get really tall? I am hoping to grow to about 180 cm or so, as I am hoping to get a really fast serve. Will I get taller than that? Or is it too hard to estimate? And also, what is the average age when girls stop growing?

Thanks in advance,

Klippy,

Girls end their growth a bit earlier than boys, USUALLY. The only way to know for sure is to look at your growth plates...or wait. :)

My daughter stopped growing at 13. She's still 5' 7", to her disappointment. :)

But, I'm watching Justine H-H on the telly now and she seems to be doing ok.

Get very strong and you will go a long way regardless of your height.

This sounds pretty much like me. In the eight grade I was the 2nd tallest in our class. I was around 180 cm at that time. Since then I have only grown few cm.
However , the tallest guy in the 8th grade just kept growing more and more. He's now like 2m, so I think he would have a good serve if he played tennis more often(he plays like once a year :D ). But it isn't always great to be 2m since he hits his head everywhere.

How tall are your parents and grand-parents? You'll probably end up a bit taller than your mom, but that can vary. There are some suplements that are advertised to help kids grow taller. Don't know if they actually work (and by 14 it may be too late).

Being tall is great, as long as it doesn't decrease your mobility/agility. I'm 6'5" (195cm) and sometimes players don't expect me to cover as much court as i do.

Being tall is great, yeah if you're a guy. I'm 6'0" myself.
But for a girl? Unless you're venturing into modeling, a lot of women don't prefer to be taller than the average male.

There is one drawback that I have noticed to being tall. I'm 6'3 and when somone hits very flat with lots of sidespin, it's a headache. It's hard for me to put pace on the ball then. However, my height also gives me a bomb of a first serve. Also, sometimes growth can be bad. If you get too tall too quickly, your game will suffer from a lack of coordination.

Well I guess being tall would suit me. I'm pretty skinny with long arms and legs. I weigh about 55 or so kilos. Probably a little more.

From my mum's side: My grandma is short, about 165 cm. Don't know about my grandad, he has been dead for a long time.
From my dad's side: My grandad is about 180cm, my grandma about 168cm or so.
My dad is about 185cm, my mum is almost 170cm.

My guess is that you'll end up between 175 and 183.

One of my friends is 16, and the last time I saw him, he was 6'11". He plays tennis, and yes, basketball. However, height doesn't always equal a big serve. Just because he's tall doesn't mean he really takes advantage over the angles. I always outserve him, and I'm under 6 foot. (Of course, I play a bit more, but you get the idea.)

When I was fourteen, I wanted to be really tall too. But now that I'm a few years older and wiser, I want to be the height I was at 14. You probably wont grow much more - I did, but it's really unusual.

MegacedU what is unusual growing or making it past 14 . I myself 6'3'' and I wouldn't change it for the world (male) only draw back is being asked by little old ladies in the supermarket if I can get something off the top shelf for them , all good though.

I have stopped growing along time ago.

You're a guy, and guys make it past 14. Girls however usually stop around a certain milestone, which I wont get into because of the abundance of guys here that I'd like to spare. Girls want to be delicate and feminine, well most of us anyway, and there's just something so gauche about being tall and lanky.

is this true for boys as well?

the reason i ask is because at 13 i started to wear a size 9 shoe and by 18 i was 5ft9 and i am still currently that height at 21 and i still wear a size 9.
my dads 6ft and my moms 5ft3

im a bit concerned that i stunted my growth because beetween 15 and 18 i became a lazy lard ass and did no sport and didnt c much sun , i also had a lot of personal problems.

i started shaving at 14 as well , do you think i stunted my growth or am i normal.
my friends are all 6ft and i was the same height as them when i was younger and even overtook them by 14 but then i just stopped.

i think something went wrong, my hands are much smaller than my dads and are they same size as they were when i was 14.

What does gauche mean? And anyway, I reckon girls would want to be a little taller, so they're legs can be longer. Being shorter equals to your legs being shorter. Yuck, I wouldn't want short legs.

guess what feds i grew a bit more hahahahahahaha im 179cm how wiked is that.haha. i think ive got u now.if i stand up straight that is....

Gauche means awkward, essentially. I like my long legs, but I don't want to grow anymore. You can still have long legs without being monstrous.

I love tall girls.... so much legs.....

anyway, girls habitually still grows untill 16, boys until 18.

I'm 180 cm too. I was one of the tallest in my class until 13, then I grow really slow until 15 then had a boost from 15 to 18.

But evreyone is different and girls and boys are different too

When I was younger I played basketball and growing tall was mine (and others) biggest preoccupation. We noticed that tall people has the bone that goes from knee to anckle (I don't know it's name in english) that is longer than in the rest of the population. So if youh have this bone long you'll be tall otherwise not. It's not a yoke... Take a look at the basketball players.

There are two bones that do that. The tibia and the fibula. You're probably talking about the fibula, the tibia's a non-weight bearing bone.

I don't know the name of the bone, but we just looked at the overall lenght of the leg from knee to anckle and found that tall people has this part of leg noticeably longer that others. Some basketball coaches in the former Yugoslavia relayed on this when scouting young talents.
