A study from Pen America warns of the long-term effects of studios censoring content to appease the Chinese government
A new report has found that the Chinese government’s influence on Hollywood is posing a serious threat to free expression.
The 94-page study, from the literary and human rights group Pen America, details the many ways that studios and film-makers continue to change “cast, plot, dialogue and settings” in an “effort to avoid antagonising Chinese officials” in films including Iron Man 3, World War Z and the upcoming Top Gun: Maverick.
“The Chinese Communist party is increasingly shaping what global audiences see,” said James Tager, deputy director of free expression research and policy at Pen America, also a lead author of the report. “While we are all well aware of the strict controls that China’s government maintains over dissent, independent thought and creativity within its own borders, the long arm of Chinese censorship – powered by vast economic incentives – has also reached deep into Hollywood, shaping perceptions, inculcating sensitivities and reshaping the bounds of what can be shown, said and told.”
Through dozens of interviews and case studies, the authors explain the many changes that have been forced upon films before they are granted a release into a lucrative market. LGBT content was removed from Bohemian Rhapsody, Star Trek: Beyond, Alien: Covenant and Cloud Atlas, scenes where Chinese people were killed were taken out of Skyfall and Mission: Impossible III and a major character was changed from Tibetan to Celtic in Doctor Strange, a decision made by the screenwriter to avoid the risk of “alienating one billion people”.
In the report, Stanley Rosen, professor of political science and international relations at the University of Southern California, says that the government “will focus on everything that has a China component in it. Don’t think that if you’re doing something that’s not intended for China, that’s an indie film meant for a small market, that China won’t notice and that it won’t hurt your blockbuster film. It will.”
The report recommends that “Hollywood studios commit to publicly sharing information on all censorship requests received by government regulators for their films”.
In 2019, American films made over $2.6bn in China with Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: Far from Home and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw making more money there than in the US.
The release of the report comes after the US government has openly criticised Hollywood for kowtowing to Chinese intervention, also blaming the studios for pre-emptively censoring or canning potentially difficult projects.
“Many more scripts never see the light of day because writers and producers know not to test the limits,” the attorney general, William Barr, said in July.
“Chinese government censors don’t need to say a word because Hollywood is doing their work for them. This is a massive propaganda coup for the Chinese Communist party.”
In June, Richard Gere appeared before the US Senate to warn about the dangers of letting China control content. “The combination of Chinese censorship, coupled with American film studios’ desire to access China’s market, can lead to self-censorship and overlooking social issues that great American films once addressed,” he said.

Berlin had an incredibly chaotic and electric energy the first time I visited in 1991. There were people from so many different places, and the contrast between East and West was still so stark. The bombed-out church and old government buildings were a reminder of the city's history. I stayed in the house of a girl's parents in a wealthy, leafy suburb not far from the city center. It was very dreary and like a different world from the city.
History of Achtung Baby
Although Achtung Baby was released on November 18/19, 1991, you might say it was actually born — at least the idea — nearly two years earlier. U2 was wrapping up 1989 with a series of shows at the Point Depot in Dublin and the end of the decade had Bono in a reflective mood.
On To Berlin
In early October 1990, U2 flew to Berlin to formally start working on what would become Achtung Baby, arriving just as the city was celebrating its Liberation Day. The band gathered at the famous Hansa Ton studios in Berlin, where David Bowie had recorded his Low and Heroes albums. But U2’s early recording work was a struggle, with no consensus over what direction the band should take after Bono’s promise to “dream it all up again.” Larry described it as a period of “immense strain.” In a later Rolling Stone article, Edge described the divisions this way:

Traveling to Berlin on a school field trip (3 days in between overnight rail trips from and to Kaiserslautern in then West Germany) was a highlight of teenagetom’s freshman year of high school. At the East German border we were ordered to shut all window curtains and keep them in the closed position until arriving in the West Berlin Bahnhof. Orders were obeyed...the Stasi were too nasty a bunch of folks for innocenttom to even consider dealing with.

I knew a guy who had to teach a top Russian scientist defector to drive during the Cold War. He was a high-ranking officer in his agency, but only top people could know about the defector. The defector stopped his car in fast traffic on the 101 in San Francisco, because he panicked. The intelligence officer had to yell, "Go, go, go!" and had the double worry of an accident and drawing attention to the Russian defector who is officially not there.

The Hard Truth About Guns N’ Roses

Name a city on their tour itinerary, and Guns n’ Roses probably have a story to go with it.
In Atlanta, Axl jumped from the stage to grab a security guard who, Axl says, shoved a friend of his without provocation. The police held Axl backstage while the rest of the band played “Communication Break-down” and “Honky Tonk Women” with a roadie singing. To avoid a trial, Axl pleaded guilty to assaulting the police and paid a fine.
In Philadelphia, just minutes before a concert, Axl got into a fight with a parking-lot attendant who, Axl says, shoved Stuart, Axl’s younger brother and personal assistant. Doug Goldstein, the group’s tough but temperate and shrewd tour manager, persuaded the police to release Axl in time for the show.
In Chicago, the band members got hassled when they tried to check into the hotel early. A fight was narrowly averted. Later that night, in the hotel bar, Axl punched a businessman who hassled his friends and called the singer a “Bon Jovi look-alike.” Dozens of cops broke up the brawl, and Axl and Steven went to jail.
Axl is so sensitive and so erratic that even the other members of the band are awed by — and maybe tired of —his “mood swings.” He travels on a separate tour bus, not only because he stays up at night and sleeps during the day but also to reduce friction with the other band members. “Axl’s a real temperamental guy,” says Slash. “He’s hard to get along with.”
A psychiatrist has diagnosed Axl’s problem as manic-depressive disorder, a condition that can cause people to swing from impulsive, reckless and argumentative fits to catatonic and suicidal periods. “I can be happier than anybody I know,” Axl says. “I can get so happy I’ll cry. I can get completely opposite, upset-wise.” Many manic-depressives turn to drugs or alcohol to lessen the pain of their illness.
Although Axl takes lithium to combat the disorder, he thinks it’s ineffective and claims to be in control of his moods.

Jimi meandered across the continent from Berkeley CA on May 30 to Byron GA on July 3 to play a slightly larger venue outdoors at the 2nd Annual Atlanta International Rock Festival. Arriving on stage at around 11pm, Hendrix played a long set before breaking into his signature solo version of The Star Spangled Banner at midnight to usher in the 194th Independence Day with about half a million fans.

The Courson family cooperated with Oliver Stone's film, and wouldn't allow speculation about Courson's heroin habit playing a part in Jim Morrison's death.
Jim Morrison mostly liked alcohol, and would often have to be carried back from UCLA parties after passing out. Most of the lyrics for the first two albums were written at UCLA, and right after when he lived in Venice and took a lot of LSD. He still took LSD during the band's early days, but his drug of choice slowly became alcohol, and reckless consumption of other drugs while drunk.
Robbie Krieger told his son that Morrison's best writing was spent by the first two albums. Pamela Courson got into heroin, which Morrison hated. Morrison hated needles, and the seediness of "scoring drugs." When they moved to Paris, one of Pam's heroin connections was a French "aristocratic" guy. The theory is that Jim overdosed on Pam's heroin.
Alcohol and heroin are a lethal combination, as both are depressants. This is why so many rock stars die of heroin overdoses.
Among the theories regarding Jim's death is that he met a dealer at a Paris club to buy heroin for Pam and snorted some in a bathroom stall while very drunk. It was dangerously pure, and combined with the alcohol, killed him. The owner didn't want the attention drawn to his club, and he had his people take Jim home and put him in the bathtub.
Another story is from Marianne Faithfull, who claims her drug dealer ex-boyfriend supplied Morrison with a lethal batch of heroin the night he died, and that it was bought for Pam. Once again, the story goes that he sampled it while wasted, and died from the combination of alcohol and lethally strong heroin.
Pam eventually died of a heroin overdose.

Needle phobia is often a hereditary condition and can lead to fainting (reflex vasovagal syncope). This happened to me once when I voluntarily submitted to a required blood test for a marriage license. My body was trying to tell me I was making a big mistake.

I also hate needles, which didn't help when I got a serious bacterial infection and had IVs in me pumping antibiotics, and then had to keep getting blood tests to see if things returned to normal. I tried not to think of Uma in this "Pulp Fiction" scene:
