Yet another word game

MMA is shorthand for mixed martial arts, a full contact combat sport, and it may be perfectly understandable that it is not recognized by the International Olympic Committee, but all the same to me that is a surprise.

“Surprise, surprise!” was a recurrent phrase spoken by Gomer Pyle in the 60s sitcom spinoff starring Jim Nabors as a Marine recruit stationed across the country from his hometown Mayberry, North Carolina.

Pop the magic dragon, oh wait, it's Puff The Magic Dragon. Someone told me Peter, Paull and Mary's PTMD song meant something else, however, they claimed they'd write about it outright if it were so, no need for such mumbo jumbo.

Mouthed (via TTW encrypted text) by VCore89 is the obvious quote stringytom was paraphrasing to meet thread rules. Sally Field was quite solid as the old school Southern lady but I really really liked her as Norma Rae a bit better.

Venice in LA is quite a colorful beach community that has contributed quite a lot to Americana during my time, from Gold’s Gym and Muscle Beach to poets and musicians.

In before another reference to Venice Beach resident Lana Del Ray by Mike B.

P.S. I like Coke, not Pepsi.

Lana heard that I used to live in Venice, so she bought a house there.
Pepsi-Cola (PepsiCo) used to be one of my mother’s favorite stocks.
Stocks of Fischer racquets reside in my house.

Asylum Records was created in 1971 by partners David Geffen and Eliot Roberts after pitching for an album as agents for Jackson Browne but being refused by Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. The cordial refusal was accompanied with a suggestion by Ertegun to the young agents to start their own company with Atlantic to fund the startup and distribute any projects in exchange for a 50/50 profit split.

Within three years, Asylum became the label for Browne, Linda Ronstadt, The Eagles, Joni Mitchell, John Fogerty and Tom Waits. What a way to build a company!

California burns in another bout of autumn Santa Ana winds.

Santa Ana winds are notable for their ferocity.

Drive through your suburbs
Into your blues, into your blues, yeah
Into your blues, into your blues!
I see your hair is burning
Hills are filled with fire
If they say I never loved you
You know they are a liar . . .

Lo(o)ng Ago (And Far Away) was the most popular of the tunes in the 1944 movie musical Cover Girl starring Rita Hayworth and Gene Kelly. One of the most beautiful movie stars ever, Ms. Hayworth was born on October 17 (stringytom’s birthday) 1918 in Brooklyn and named Margarita Carmen Cansino but took her shortened given name and her mother’s maiden name as her stage name. Her parents were both vaudeville dancers when they met and her father Eduardo Cansino moved the family to Hollywood believing his daughter had the talent to appear in the fledgling musical movie genre. He was right about that but wrong in the worst way as a father, sexually abusing his teenage daughter.
