Zverev will never win a slam as long as he lives

Up 2-0 in sets and somehow he throws the next 2 sets. Thiem being wheeled out for the tiebreak on one leg and still beats him. This was the golden opportunity. By the time Djokovic and Nadal go away Tsitsipas and Medvedev will be winning. This guy is finished, he won’t come back from this.

I hope not, but unfortunately as long as he keeps his ranking top 5/top 10 there is always the possibility open like at this slam of only having to play mugs to make the final if there are a couple of upsets

Technique weaknesses always show up under pressure. His inconsistent serve toss and many DFs (2 in fifth set TB) can’t make him ever feel like he is the best player deserving of a Slam title when he is in another final. No wonder he played so poorly in the end including throwing in a 89mph 1st serve and 68mph 2nd serve in the very end there. What a horrible unforced error on the last point to hand Thiem the title after Thiem choked away two CPs with short FH errors.

Zverev is dominating tennis after the big 3 retire. Many won’t like it, but it is what it is.

Of course the loss was extremely disappointing for him (and me), but he will take away important lessons to be learned.
If he goes back and studies the 'tape' which I'm sure his coach will force him to do, he will see how he blew so many
opportunities.
Zed didn't lose today because of lack of talent, MAKE NO MISTAKE ABOUT IT.
It was his head, and stupid decisions made at various times in the match.
Oh, and with his serving capabilities, you SERVE OUT THE MATCH, you don't choke there!

It's about 50/50. He's past 22 now with no Slam and took him past 21 to make first SF. Doesn't mean he won't win but does mean he won't be an all timer.

99 FO Medvedev, 04 FO Coria and a slew of other less prolific examples of high seeded players blowing chances show the mental scarring many often carry. More recently you look at a guy like Dimitrov after 2017 AO

Who exactly is gonna beat him? He can't play any worse than that and still was a whisker from winning.
Thiem, Medvedev, Tsitsipas.

Thiem
exactly the way he did it today. Remember he was badly cramping in the 5th, so Thiem is normally much better.
Medvedev in 2019 form defeats 2020 Zverev quite easily.
Tsitsipas choked at 2020 USO even more badly than Zverev did it in the final, but it was at much earlier stage, so everyone is going to forget it. H2H: Tsitsipas 5-1 Zverev.

His top level is higher than that of Tsitsipas and Medvedev. He played well for the first 2,5 sets, won't let that slip away again. Plus no way they are gonna beat him every time at every Slam. Also Thiem is 4 years older, not a big difference now when they are 23 and 27 respectively but 2-3 years from now it's gonna show.

And I'm saying this as one of the founders of the ABZ club. Barring some injury or a real ATG emerging (like a new Becker at least) the guy is gonna win at least one Slam in his career.

As long as he lives? So if A. Zverev is hit by a truck tomorrow and dies, could M. Zverev win the next AO? He beat the World number one at the Australian Open 3 years ago. LOL

I just hope he will learn from this match. Very tough loss, but he reached his first GS final and almost won while he was very far from his best level. He can only play better. He has a positive H2H against Federer. Nadal's game suits him well, he almost beat him several times and won the last match. If he can avoid Djokovic in the draw of a GS, he will have other chances. Once the 3 goats have retired, he and Thiem and Medvedev will always be outsiders to win the slams. I have no doubt.

Let's give the guy some credit. He has silenced those critics that said he would never get to a Slam final. He showed grit to come back from 2 sets down. He played inconsistently in 5th but so did Thiem. They were both a mental mess.
To Zverev's credit, he blew Thiem off the court in first two sets and had his chances to win the match in the fifth. He could have just rolled over and lost in straight sets like all the experts predicted.

I was at the 2016 IW match on center court at IW. Zverev blew a match point against Nadal with a volley that many 4.0 players could have made.

I was also thinking of the AO match in 2017. Zverev had not even won his 1st M1000 at the time and he pushed Nadal to the 5th set. Nadal who 10 days later was 10 points away from the trophy.
I remember the IW match very well.
And of course, the Rome final. 6-1 in the 2nd and 3-1 for Zverev in the 3rd set when the rain stopped him. Didn't win a game after that. We'll never know what would have happened if not for the rain but it proved that even on a slow Clay, he has the game to put Nadal in huge troubles.
Nadal wasn't injured at all in London last year, or he wouldn't have beaten Tsitsipas and Medvedev in the RR. Zverev beat him in straight sets.
I would love to see them playing each other in a slam again.

He'll win some. Maybe not as many as people expected him to, imo he'll snag a few slams. It was a good sign on more occassions than expected he attacked and moved forward as he does show signs of having good hands at net, those half volleys were impressive. Was driving me nuts when he hits a 136 mph serve, the return floats back and he retreats BEHIND the baseline for his first ball. His team better get on him regarding those 90 mph 1st serves and 68 mph 2nd serves. That was difficult to watch.

Fact is that many didn’t even think he would come to Finals and he proved them all wrong by winning in 5 sets two days ago; playing two weeks on court does make any human to tense out when you are that close to win the trophy, and matter of fact even Domi had his tense moments in the match! We see a mature Zverev so far, just That he couldn’t convert! he will have more chances for sure!

I think the OP is over-reacting as I do expect Zverev to win multiple Slams especially in 2-3 years when the Big3 are likely no longer a threat. But, right now he needs a sports psychologist to prevent choking like happened today and a serve coach to help cure his 2nd serve technique problems. If you don’t have dominant self-belief when you step up to serve out a match, it’s tough to win tight matches against good opponents.

As long as his 2nd serve toss varies by almost 3 feet from left to right and his 2nd serve speed varies from 68-130 mph, I don’t see him winning Slams in the near future against higher-ranked opponents. Maybe he will get lucky and play a lower seed in an upset-stricken Slam next year and find a way to win as the lower seed might choke even more than him like PCB did in the semi.

Pretty bold thing to say about a 23-year-old who's made the Semis and Finals in his last two slam appearances.

Seems like he's starting to figure it out.

Zverev is almost 25. He's got at least 5 prime years. Even if he only has a 1 in 20 chance to win a slam per slam, over 20 slams, he has a 64% chance of winning at least one. That means he's more likely to win one than not. I agree he's not going to win one with a tough draw at his level over the past year, but if he got, for example, Nadal's 2017 U.S. Open draw, he could win one or more.

I'm sure he will win one at least. Its not like theres many great players now on tour. No ATG. If Johannson can win a slam, Zverev can in an era of complete bums. . LOL
