Reading all the amazing posts in here is killing me. I only ordered my TC97 18x20 yesterday but I want it already. I'm about equally excited about this purchase as my Pro Stocks! I would not have thought that was possible!

I think it will play as well as your pro stocks honestly, do you have the PT57A? I doubt you will notice any quality difference. In fact you may notice the paint and grommet quality to be higher.

Yeah it's certainly sounding like the quality is very high. I don't have a PT57A unfortunately. I have a PC600 which is perhaps my closest comparison to that. All of the comments on similarity to the PT57A is really what made me so interested in getting one.

The TGT292.1 was the hardest racket transition I have made. If I totally fall in love with this racket I could see myself getting a matched set of four for me, and perhaps a couple for my wife as well, thought probably the TC100 :)

Oh ok cool. I had the TGK237.3, and the angell has way better feel.

The PC600 has awesome feel though. I just prefer the Pt630 because it suits my style of play better and the feel is insane for being a midplus frame. You are as connected to the ball as with a mid.

I brought what I was expecting (and advertised) to be a YouTek Prestige Pro. Turned out to be a TGK238.5. That's what got me obsessed with Pro Stocks and my eventual purchase of the four TGT292.1s. The tip speed is just so much faster it was an adjustment.

I have no trouble with the MID size, but a MP is probably preferable. And a recent exercise trying to find grommets has been a bit of an eye opener. So the Angell option, being very well regarded for quality and feel, being readily available (and parts) is a big deal. Compound that with them being (what I consider) very well priced compared to mass retail rackets it really does become pretty compelling.

Yes, it is a big deal. Especially when you find the frame that works for you. Although I suspect you picked right the first time since the 18x20 has nailed that amazing Head feel.

I respectfully do not agree with @Power Player's comment in that statement, if he is talking about TC97 16x19. I have flattish FH and OHBH, and the TC97 16x19 gives me significant amount of topspin, this was one area of my technique that had left a lot to desire and I was amazed how a racquet could help me with this issue. I have to admit that my topspin is not like @Backhanded Compliment when he describes his shots as "high-kicking," but still so much that more of it is actually detrimental to my game.

With the TC97 18x20 had trouble generating topspin with my technique, I had to flatten my trajectory and preparation. It and I just could not get along, and I'll soon be selling it and sticking with my current TC97s. I think if you currently do not rely on topspin, the TC97 16x19 will help generate more of it, which may or may not be what you are looking for. If not, then the 18x20 maybe better suited IMHO.
So my quandry is this: I currently have the TC97 16x19, which I enjoy (also have the Yonni Xi98, which I also enjoy; love those 16x20 patterns). But, my FHs and OHBHs are normally on the flattish, driving side of things; that said, I will impart some top when I set up correctly for a particular shot, or sometimes when on the run and I need to flick a shot back to give me some time to recover. However, I've found that sometimes/often, they will launch on me. Probably 90% technique, but since I don't regularly use a lot of topspin, the launching is likely due to lack of use as much as technique; or both. So, me thinks that an 18x20 will help me tame my infrequent attempts at more loopy or even moderate topspin shots. And, it sounds like if I wanted to get better at hitting more heavy topspin shots, the 18x20 won't hold me back.

Transition from YY xi98 to TC97 18x20 was a breeze once I dialed in the setup. Honestly the Angells don't need much lead, if any. Don't think that should give you too many issues.

Which Angell plays somewhat similar as the Yonex DR98, and will potentially improve on it?

For me the DR98 had a low launch angle, was very control orientated, and was hard work on defensive shots. I find the Angell TC97 (16/19) and 100 to be significantly more powerful, more spin friendly and higher launch. For me these are all improvements. However, if you want to get closer to the DR98 in terms of response and launch i think the 18/20 patterns, in either the TC95 or 97, will do that, as they will be more control orientated and lower launch. Indeed, you may even favour the 70RA version of the 18/20 TC95 (67RA strung). Whereas that may sound counter-intuitive, the Angell range plays, in feel terms, below the published RA due to the foam fill (and overall lay up), whereas the DR range plays above its RA (due in part to the throat/beam design which adds dynamic stiffness).

On the other hand if you are looking for something more markedly different, the 16/19s, in 63RA (95 and 100) or TC97, will do that for you. But they will be more of a departure.

If I understood some comments here, Angells play all by themselves. They serve, return, spin, push around, make winners, with each ball out of the string bed being incredibly heavy.
But in case those racquets don't quite do all that for you, it means they're not for you. Or better said, you're not for them.

Perhaps Paul should make a test, a racquet embedded in stone, like Excalibur. If you're able to pull it out, then you're The One and you should play with it, together with other Immortals of Tennis.
All the others are meant to serve their purpose as a mere tennis cannon fodder.

Angell-alibur, at your service :)

I haven’t played the DR version but I played the AI98. I’d say the TC97 16x19 plays closest except it has more feel and super plush.

I assume the only difference between the Pro and Tour version is the weight?
With 310gr, the DR98 seems to be right between the Pro (290gr) and Tour (320gr). Would you recommend a Pro or a Tour version?

Correct, it's the weight. I can't give you advice on specs as that is very personal. I played the 330g weight custom version. If you feel you can go up in weight from the DR, then by all means the 320. The frame is maneuverable but your call what weight balance is your comfort zone

Ask Paul to find the frame that is as close as possible to DR weight and ballance. He will be happy to do that.
I switched myself from DR98 and both TC97 and TC95 came in with ~ 314g/310mm.
Due to the foam core Angell frames will have higher swingweight than DR98. Angells hit heavier ball, but DR98 was more manouverable for me.
If you want the SW closer to DR98, then you probably go with RA70 Angells.

Will do.
What I would like is a racket which has the maneuverability of the DR98, but the power and spin of the Aero (have played the Tour version of this one as well).
So I can imagine that the 16x19 97" version will suite me well.

I have had now two outings with TC97 18/20, 320, 310mm. There is a lot positive and then something less positive.

The less positive is actually my fault and can’t be seen as a negative attribute of Angell. Ironically I order my first custom made frame and I get it wrong J. I ordered mine with weight and balance of Prestige MP just assuming that I would end up with strung and over gripped balance to 32cm like my all other Prestiges except intelligence one. The balance is actually 31.4 cm. And as I assumed the problem would be in the serve and it was. I actually have same balance on my iPrestige and I don’t fancy serving with it either. I applied 4g at 12 and it helped for the serve as the balance got up to 31.8 cm but same time of course SW climbs up. I will try 2g extra when the SW would be around 350 and balance 32cm. If I can get used to this SW then problem solved. If not then I need to consider ordering another one. Because the racket itself is that good!

Then the good. Well, I have been looking for alternative to Prestige for long. This one fits the bill but admitted – it is not much easier to use. But the feel is impressive. Soft but not noodly by any means. Firm but not harsh by any means. And the hoop is all around solid, no dead spots, no flimsiness in any part. Just solid solid solid, like iPrestige but with more firm response. The impact felt familiar and oh yes, the good old POG mid is the one that I could trace back that feeling. Only that this is 18/20.

I felt there is power when you command for it. It is controlled as long as your technique reaches. Obviously any racket with SW 340-350 will feel powerful but this is so smooth. Spin for me is not down to string pattern as much as it is to the weight distribution. In other words I expect no problems there once I get the balance to my liking. But I can tell that when you get your shoulder fully behind the ball and blast your FH cross court the ball really goes. And when you can trust the frame to go for it you probably will more and more.

Serve returns with this control and power are truly enjoyable. Let’s see if I can still manage with added SW. Same goes for slices. It is quite easy to get them deep and low. And at best really low. Actually I am slicing only on my backhand side as I fractured an bone on my left wrist. So I guess I will play Steffi Graf backhand for some months still.

So to sum it up. The racket feels probably as good as it can get in modern market. Will it help me in long run in match play remains to be seen. But as long as you have the technique and have disciplined feet the reward is at hand. Literally. Perhaps I will try bit less HL option with same weight. But this really is contender for Prestige MP. Oh, last but not least, the steady THUMB sound on clean hits is surely addictive.

No, the comments are more like - have good footwork and know how to play and these things being mentioned will be the results. The reason I personally mention heavy shots, since you are targeting me a little here, is because a lot of people will wonder how big of a ball can be hit with a softer frame. Additionally with the users saying this about the TC95, the pattern is very open so it generates a ton of spin for being a 95.

But, carry on.

i tested all 3 models recently (dr 98, tc 95 63ra 16x19, tc 97 16x19). if you want a racquet with more spin potential than the dr 98 i would recommend the tc 95 over the tc 97, without a doubt. also they come with a relatively high swingweight, so if you want a racquet with the maneuverability of the dr98 its better to contact the owner of angell, so that he can find a racquet with the desired swingweight.

I used to think like that. But now I truly believe they are indeed magical.
Where else can I find a very powerful frame, with lots of spin, great feeling, pinpoint control and no harsh vibration that will still sound like a pro frame everytime I hit the ball?
Magical, I'm telling you. If there was a better frame, I'd own it.

Of course I'm kidding. But really, not by much.

Yeah I agree it is a magical frame if you are looking for certain traits. For someone looking for a Pure Drive or power Tweener, it will not be magical at all. For me, the incredible feel and connection to the ball makes me play my best. That is all I can ask for.

I also really enjoy playing tennis again with the racquet. This is the most I have played in a long time simply because I really enjoy the perfect feel of the racquet and my results on the court as well. Many times it is just one thing or the other, but this is not the case with the TC97 for me.

Do you layer your 4 grams of lead at 3 and 9?
Or do you do four 10cm strips on each side at both at 3 and 9?

There are frames with qualities you mentioned out there but other important aspect is long term availability(frame+grommets) and production consistency. Put this all together and there is really nothing else out there like Angell racquets(...that I know of), at least in the same price range.

Which strings are recommended? I was thinking about RPM Blast + VS hybrid

I'm considering string options as well. I have KLIP Legend Tour natural gut, RPM Blast, Xcel, NRG2 and Hyper-G in stock to choose from.only had on outing with the KLIP in another racket so thinking either then Xcel or NRG2.

Wow, lots of variation there. If I didn't use full poly, I'd go full natural gut. If you go poly, you can string low, but the Hyper G I'd probably want in the high 40's, as it is rather powerful.

Yeah I keep a bit of string stock as I string for a few club members, as well as my own rackets. I have always played full poly, last few years has been Lux 4G. The past year it has been a lot of RPM Blast. I've been changing rackets so much the last 12 months (searching for that one that just clicks) and managed to develop mild TE. It's been about a month with the TGT292.1 rackets, strung with a quality multi and also using the Tourna Sampras O dampener (don't usually use one). Touch wood, TE is better. So I'm entertaining going back to a poly again to get some of that control back. Fairest test for the incoming TC97 18x20 will probably be Xcel or NRG2, just to normalise the sting as get a better appreciation for what the frame is bringing.

League starts for me real soon so I am waiting on my RSLyon to show up tomorrow. I was going to put Hyper G in the frame but I realized I needed a day off and then need to just stick with one frame and string from there on it. Consistency is my friend for match play. Speaking of that, I need to get another TC97, as I'm going to switch to it. I'm surprise my TC95 has not been grabbed yet, although I do get emails about it.

Do we have pics of the different grommets in the frames? I am curious how the red looks. The green is also really cool looking.

Hi everybody

I have worked through this incredible informative thread over the last week after getting some good feedback on my question what custom Angell racquet would suit me (TC97 16x19).

Before I contact Paul I would like to get so more feedback on the following:

Most of you have stated that the Angell racquets -- due to being foam-filled -- play super-solid ("plush" is the word) and with enough plough-through. Some of you have also stated that this allows you to play with a less leaded-up racquet - both in static weight and swing weight.

Now this I find confusing. I currently lead up my Prince TT95/100P racquets to 345g/12oz static weight with SW of 325-330 and to get to 8 points HL balance. I do this to get 1) a bit more power & stability and 2) more comfort with the increased weight since the Prince racquets are hollow (I cannot play them stock as my shoulder feels it after 30m of hard hitting).

Also some of you have stated that the resulting balance after adding strings, OG and dampener was not what you were used to and it made swinging the Angell more difficult. So some of you had to add lead to the grip to bring the balance up to your spec again - which increased the static weight again.

Questions:
So should I now mirror those specs for my custom Angell racquet order?
Or should I actually go for a lighter static weight & SW since the Angel racquets plays more solid due to being-foam filled ?
How did you handle the whole personal preference for the racquet's balance?

Thanks for some insights on the above. This would add some value when I message Paul.

If you want 8 pts balance and the same SW, I'd go with the 10 Pts HL option and 320 grams. You should not have to do much past that as the SW will be right where you want it.

Those are kind of my specs that I feel most comfortable. I can play almost anything at this point but to maximize my potential I usually end up with specs you posted.

So if that helps I ordered 320gr 31cm

And Paul sent my final specs after leather grip
319 30.8 and 301sw

I was going to put Hyper G in the frame but I realized I needed a day off and then need to just stick with one frame and string from there on it. Consistency is my friend for match play. Speaking of that, I need to get another TC97, as I'm going to switch to it. I'm surprise my TC95 has not been grabbed yet, although I do get emails about it.

Do we have pics of the different grommets in the frames? I am curious how the red looks. The green is also really cool looking.
Have you tried Weiss cannon silver string vs rslyon?

No, I like RSlyon and found reels overseas for a good price so I did not try both. I do believe topspn has and they play somewhat the same. Probably can not go wrong with either, but I just really love the control and feel of the RS.

Those are kind of my specs that I feel most comfortable. I can play almost anything at this point but to maximize my potential I usually end up with specs you posted.

So if that helps I ordered 320gr 31cm

And Paul sent my final specs after leather grip
319 30.8 and 301sw

dgoran - Ok excellent thank you. So now I can be as specific as needed with Paul.

For those who have mentioned that the SW is right up against, or even beyond, their normal spec threshold, I recall reading somewhere in this thread about folks who have experimented with removing the pallets and taking out one of the circular installed weights. While working with Paul at the outset to find the right SW is preferable, for those who already have the racquet and feel that the SW may be a bit unmanageable, is removing a weight a credible option? Or will that mess up the overall feel of the frame? Anyone here tried it and, if so, what have been the results?

in my humble opinion removing the weights from pallets (inside the handle) not going to change swingweight, it will change the static weight and balance only.

I also think that many people who need low swing weights would probably benefit from the 70 RA 95 frame anyway. It should have a little more pop that would replace the loss of true power from the lowered SW.

Yeah I agree it is a magical frame if you are looking for certain traits. For someone looking for a Pure Drive or power Tweener, it will not be magical at all. For me, the incredible feel and connection to the ball makes me play my best. That is all I can ask for.

This is how I prep for every match with my magical Angell TC95 to summon spin and huge serves.

The fact that Im in the best athletic form of my life with all the agility drills and I guesss some would call advanced tennis relevant yoga poses has nothing to do with it. All those lessons with a former tour pro and a Great Grandfather that was a former Olympic Gymnast in the rings (for genes and good shoulders/body control) has nothing to do with my results. It's all Angell.

but seriously the TC95 is the best sub 60RA control frame for dynamically contrasting spin and flat hitting available. This is partly because it wasnt value engineered for profits and marketing but for player demands and his own decades of pro player frame service.

(waves hands magically)

I pulled the trigger on frame 2. Same exact thing, just green grommets. They look too damn cool. That should have me set for league play.

green is cool... Ill put mine on some time.

Repeated because its good advice... Im big and very strong and I train... the 63ra is great but if I wasnt fast on the court the lack of time to set up would be a deal breaker. As it is I enjoy the way the TC95 can crush or finesse so well... my forehand has less variety but my BH well all those options makes it hard for my opponent to prep fow what comes next... a slice approach, a dtl flat or topsin screamer... a deep heavy topspin ball to the center baseline or in the corner... a drop shot? Pick a racquet that emphasises your strengths... for me its a power/finesse variety game that varies flat and heavy topspin with some S&V and aggressive returning. I believe most players need more consistency... especially on depth and serve placement. The TC97 and TC100 should both provide that more readily.... but not magically.

Haha..yeah its funny when people come in here and try and spin frame reviews.

Green Grommets remind me of the old Head Prestige with a similar black/green color. I have a soft spot for that look. The blue are also awesome. I would suggest to anyone buying an Angell for the first time to go with a color besides black. It just makes the frame pop and looks awesome.

This thread is Working out for Angell tennis. Ordered a TC97 18x20 last week in an attempt to come close to the specs of my old PT280. Since my 280 is about 345g strung with overgrip and dampener I went with the 330g, 10 pts HL version. May end up a tad heavier than the 280 but I am fine with that since I don't like adding lead tape to my frames.

yeah though black looks really good... I too have a thing for that green and grey prestige classic colorscape. Its always the wizard not the wand... I play fine with an IGPMP too just I like the Angell better...
