His Twitter shows him hitting balls on hard court in Dubai today. He previously said in March that he would announce on May 10 his decision about RG. Instead silence.... will he play, or won't he?

Maybe he is privy to inside information, and has been told that RG will in fact switch to hard courts this year.

He said before in Miami that he would continue practicing on HC and make the transition to clay about 2 weeks before RG (he doesn't want to change his game too much). I think he's on a schedule and is definitely going to be there.

This sounds so weird to me but it's Fed so he knows what he's doing.

He said to Gilbert in Miami that he wouldn't have an issue translating his hardcourt game to clay. It's all a matter of his knees and if he's excited about the clay transition.

Perhaps he feels he can practice on hardcourt and only need 2 weeks to practice on clay for RG. I mean it's Fed. He understands the game and the surface transitions better than anyone. I think he's just using the Dubai heat to get back in match shape.

2017 reminds me about 2010 when Federer won AO and Nadal won everything else. Started well but ended terribly. But it's life.

I feel like this is a silly question to ask when Dubai has freaking man-made islands but do they have clay courts in Dubai? Sureshly they must but I'm not quite suresh

He is playing like 23. He shows no sign of tiredness.
However the main problem is not lying at Nadal's level of play, but at Federer's motivation. I wonder if he has the same desire after so many successes. He had that problem in 2010. After AO, he quit mentally and had to suffer bad losses everywhere.

He's not as fast as he used to be, this is clear. He's had some success this year no doubt, but hardly had to go through the gauntlet like Fed did at AO, IW, MIA.

Nadal has more mileage at 30 than Nole or Mugg do. Expecting him to grind at RG is unthinkable. He's got to be more efficient than he is now. He looked rough vs. Fob and Kyrgios has been battling injury all week.

For Fed at this point I think it's all about him enjoying the tennis he is playing and having the motivation to play his heart out at the tournaments he does enter. If that means spending a lot less time on clay than usual, even for practice, then so be it. He knows that almost everything that he could achieve at this point is gravy, so he is just focusing on playing the way he wants to and the way he does best.

Didn't he already confirm was gonna play the French (a week or so ago)? A week on clay is more than enough for him to get used to the movement and the rest will be taken care of by match play...

Yep. Pretty much what he said himself before. "Playing the way he wants to" is essential, he'll likely play the same way he did on HCs at RG, regardless of the result. I'm eager to see how he will look.
