...if Roger Federer announced his retirement after winning #19 today?

I know a similar question was asked after #18, but the circumstances are different here. Federer finally has the record at Wimbledon, his favorite tournament, the birthplace of tennis. He has nearly nothing left to play for. He has had a multi-slam year at the age of 35 (nearly 36!). He also stated that his wife may decide that he should stop playing tennis. If Federer just hung up his racket after becoming a tennis legend today, what would you do?

I know some posters are already thinking about the US Open and other events, so I just wanted to see what the general consensus was.

I voted "yes" but only to see the results.
And improve life on the forums
And not see any more hairy leg poses on bear rugs caressing Wimb trophies
And to make room for some youngsters while Rafa collects another 4 or 5 slams
And to spread the joy, the bounty
And for so so many other reasons ...

Some will say sour grapes but I don't feel sour today at all, just sad Marin couldn't give it his all due to that blister.

Doesn't matter whether he retires now, after his 30th slam. Him retiring will be an incredibly sad time for tennis fans after nearly two decades of being such a great ambassador

If I could separate Fed out from his fans and the media drool, I might be able to return to my initial feelings about Fed (before coming online or becoming tennis obsessed, due to Rafa) i.e. sensing he was the greatest tennis player I had ever seen (I had yet to see Rafa) and feeling indifferent towards him personally. No animosity, just indifference. It has to do with the way you can't see what he's feeling when he's playing. I could never get behind them due to that.

But when I can ignore all the Rafa bashing I read on the threads, and all the GOATing in your face, I can still appreciate the elegance and the ease of what Fed does.

Very Sad. He's an all time great and makes tennis interesting. Seeing him retire on Wednesday wasn't the most pleasant of sights.

No way he should retire. If he loves it still, which we know he does and we know he loves winning. Fed will want more history and number 20 at us open might be just around the corner too. The sky is the limit. It's up to Nadal, Djokovic and Murray to respond!

Well it just goes to show how awesome Djokovic was playing in 2015 and early 2016. He was the only man to stop federer then. If it weren't for Novak, fed would be sitting on about 23 slams. Fed maintained his high level whereas Djoko dropped away.

I hope Novak comes back as tennis misses him and federer misses him for the challenge he presents. However, Novak needs to take a rest and for him target Aussie open 2018 for his major comeback.

huh? where did you read that. he said if mirka ever tells him that she doesn't enjoy traveling anymore, he would hang it up b/c he couldn't do all of this w/o her. however he said she is quite content traveling and loves it all at the moment.

I'd be disappointed his final match was so poor. But alas that's the way it is for most players.

I want to see Federer competing for years yet as long as he still enjoys the game and the lifestyle.

I have started getting worried now if Novak will retire in an injury break that is maybe coming. So then I would get sad if he retired and wished I bothered to watch him more really.
Has he had months w injury breaks before? He hasnt skipped a slam, right? I wonder how he will take it. Maybe something to discuss in another thread. Many things he has less love for tennis than Fed and Rafa, even some Novak fans said that in here, but I find that strange as he is probably more connected to tennis hence his tough past w the war and tennis gave another focus and joy.

Would seem strange to retire right now. But should he take USO and end the season at #1, I think he will be tempted to quit on top.

I think it's Mirka's desicion, anyway :)

It seems people out there are more concerned with the preservation of a perfect legacy, while Roger Federer is more concerned with playing tennis. As someone who had enough of Federer winning in 2005 I would be perfectly happy if he called it a day, but I don't think for a second that he would be, and why would anybody wish unhappiness on someone, or want them to stop doing what they love? Let him do what he clearly enjoys, stop trying to predict when he'll give it up, and when the tennis world will become a lesser place.

At Roland Garros, following an interview with Bedene on his struggles with motivation, Fabrice Santoro spoke about how Federer is still like a little kid in the locker room, in love with the game, and the travelling, and the occasion. Contrast that with the crap that comes out of the mouths of people like Kyrgios and Tomic, and it should become ever more apparent that tennis needs more people like Roger Federer, not less.

I don't want to see him retire now, especially since there are hardly any other guys doing well. Almost all the (limited) fun that happened in 2017 is because of him.
