A little knee pain - should I be worried?

Whenever I play tennis after a hour my right knee stars to hurt a little - but it is not great pain - its bearable. It lasts about 7 hours after tennis - the next day is everything ok.

Is this due to my overweight? I am 183 cm big and I have 104 kg. I am on a diet now and have lost already 10kg. 15 kg to go.. :)

thanks

I think your weight has a lot to do with it. Shoes with lots of cushioning could help too.

Weight is a part of it, but there are other factors: general leg/glute strength, conditioning, and stretching. Also, type of surface you are playing on and shoes you are wearing can impact you....

Really depends on where you are feeling the pain, but a few things I recommend doing or looking into:
-Next shoe investment make sure its not a "light" shoe, or fast shoe. Go for something with some support
-possibly invest in some shoe insoles, soft sol makes good ones
-be careful on some indoor surfaces, not all made the same
-put some time into stretching: calves, quads, glutes, IT band. Stretching should take 1-2 minutes on each stretch, and don't listen to people who say its bad to do it beforehand. There is a routine to warming up...Take the time to do this, and if your inexperienced with stretching work with a trainer a few times
-If you do any weight lifting do some leg and back work, strengthen the muscles, it will also help you lose weight quicker

Good luck!

It sounds like the early stages of knee osteoarthritis. And being overweight is a leading risk factor. Lose the weight.

I didn't listen to some people here and kept playing. One day suddenly got worse because cartilage damage was building up and finally torn. The surgeon said i could have prevented it had I stopped playing early on.

Weight is obviously a problem, but you are addressing it, just make sure to eat healthy.
Check your technique, you might be rotating that knee too muck or steeping into the ball with your weight on that leg too much.

Incorrect technique is a strong factor in injuries, so be careful with that. Make sure that you warm up properly, and then there is tennis itself.
It is a sports with great impact on the joints, so you are aiming to play regularly and at a higher level and intensity, start to think about the physical side of tennis.
Exercise to build muscle and resistance, go to a gym if necessary to make the proper exercises, and listen to your body.

Lots of simple math here... For every pound you carry the force applied to that knee joint is from 5-10 times per pound. There are many issues that can be addressed... weight is the simple one. I was going to say easy... losing weight is not easy. BTW.. the best way to lose weight is to eat less. Trying to lose weight by exercise alone is foolishness. Go eat one large bagel... and you have to do cardio for like 2 hours to burn of the cals.. If you have bad knees... how does one do it??

Better to skip the bagel. I know folks will jump on me for my general math skills... I was of course talking simple terms. You want to get OCD.. go ahead.

EAT less... to lose weight. He is the thing also... if you really want to help your knees. Lose the weight before you go back on the court.

Good orthotics with good arch support make an enormous difference for knees. I like the superfeet brand as they fit in athletic shoes very well.

I am in the dropping weight phase myself. In past 20 months have dropped a significant amount of weight, initially by radical diet change, then by 4-5 days a week on the court. My last 20 lbs just won't move now, so I need to figure something else out to make it to my goal.

i think this is very healthy - Lose the weight before you go back on the court.

thanks. I think the same - but I love tennis too much. I will go to court but I will only hit easy strokes - not sprint too much. :)

The facts are now uncertain to me, check this view --- I believe that some of the tissues of the knee involved in osteoarthritis can hide pain for some time. Maybe it was the articular cartilage, covering the ends of the bones, that does not produce much pain. When the cartilage is deteriorated in spots and bone becomes involved, the pain increases. In other words, you can get serious damage before much pain.

Played today again, with a easier tempo. 2.5h hitting session. The pain came again after 1 hour of tennis. The pain is now almost gone. So in 2 hours after tennis there is no pain and I get the pain only in the right knee - because of the right handed forehand - most of the times im leaning on this knee. also most of the time im stopping running from from left to right.

Go to betterbraces.com it has the best selection of many types of braces.

I prefer the Donjoy products. There are some that are specific to osteoarthritis and others that are best for patellar stabilization ... would need to know what you really need.

I would stay away from Ace ... low end not super awesome,

if you are willing to spend the money, I would go with something like this:
Osteo-arthritis
https://www.betterbraces.com/donjoy-oa-reaction-web-knee-brace

Patellar stabilization:
https://www.betterbraces.com/donjoy-tru-pull-advanced-system-1

and they have a 25% off sale for pres day through Monday.

The webbing spreads out pressure and absorbs it much like natural functioning cartilige will.

If you don't have stability problems, you don't likely need the hinged types, and the purely slip on ones like you pictured do not like staying in place.

More vegetables and protein. Cut way back on sugars and carbs. This should force your body to start burning fat if that's your issue. If you are replacing excess weight with muscle, I would not worry.

oh, I haven't really seen sugar in a year. I would really like to eat a piece of bread ... nice crusty bread. I am getting kinda tired of boneless skinless chicken and vegeatables for nearly every meal. :(

I am not worried about the scale per se. I still have fat around the midsection that has to go away. But I am in the precarious place of only consuming about 1500 cals a day (yes I count the darn things) so I cannot drop that any further ... so that means either more excercise somehow or being patient.

Perhaps I will just take double my prescribed thyroid meds and see what happens LOL

You have to know what you are supporting before just picking a brace. Are you supporting the patella? the acl? or lifting kneecap to take pressure off?

Are you having stability problems or just pain? That is a critical piece of information and if you have stability issues, get to a doc pronto.

McDavids don't usually fit terribly well, just a sleeve I am not a fan of.

Over my 30 years now of wearing a brace, I totally recommend the Donjoys. They are the best ones out there. (there is a reason they are used by the NFL)

Here is a very informative video that also mentions knee stress with forehand techniques.

https://usercontent1.hubstatic.com/12426032.jpg

When I watch his foot on the linear technique his foot looks planted while his body is turning. That looks possibly stressful to the knee. ?? Brown said they were working on a different technique to help with a knee problem. A clear video of your forehand might show something.

But if you are feeling any pain stop immediately and find out what is going on.

I have arthritis in my right knee. It showed in an X ray for the first time by the spacing between the knee bones.

Do air squats until you lose the weight, every 1lb of weight above the knee = 5lbs on the knee. Exercise the muscles that support the knee. Squats and bike work that spot perfectly.

If your pain comes and goes, your hitting a nerve. If its a hot pain on the lower outside of the knee, tape or other support cures it. There is a funny bone in your knee like the elbow, sometimes it flares up like your arm.

i think its the last one: lifting kneecap --- because i think the weight is the problem. I have at least 20kg overweight! I have absolutely no stability problem - just bearable pain. i played yesterday tennis and the pain was increasing slowly - in the first 30 minutes there was no pain but at the end of the session it was at max - i can play for 2 hours then the pain is starting to annoy and disturbing me.
i must loose some weight as fast i can - and maybe do some air squats? would that help?

thanks for the recommendation - but they are so expansive - i dont think i can afford it :\ it starts at 200$.

If it hurts stop. your the gauge. Maybe not go so deep if they hurt.

Your on the border of knee bad knee pain. Its circulation then bulk as far as the work out.

If an air squat hurts your knee, its already damaged since you cant take you own bodys weight.

Id start riding a bike. The inner is bad, its where you take the brunt (support), If you look at pros legs, they actually have a mucsle in that spot.

Your kneecap could be slipping but unlikely, aside from that its supporting with other muscles and losing some weight. Progress is what it is, not going to happen ovenight. Feeling better vs feeling worse

You are the one that said price doesn't matter ... so I gave links to the best ones .... try this one and build up your muscles. https://www.betterbraces.com/donjoy-performance-dual-pinpoint-knee-strap

One of the best exercises is actually incredibly simple: stand on one leg no support. Now do it with your eyes closed. Will work all those little stabilizer muscles that you likely don't have right now. Then do single leg isometric squat, not terribly deep

Yes, I suppose if you don't know braces ... my custom brace cost well north of 1500USD ... worth every penny.

I am not a fan of sleeves, they do not apply appropriate pressure to the right spots to lift the condlyar up off the weakened cartilage.

If you are going to spend 79EUR, step up another 20 to get something that works very well ... but first things first is strengthening.

In the meantime, your notes indicate that you are spending 2 hours or longer on the court at a time ... may wish to limit this to 90 minutes max while you are getting re-conditioned, dropping weight and building some strength.

wanted to ask something related to loosing weight. Is that true that you first loose some of your muscles and only then fat starts to burn!? :\

Do donjoy have a product that does both? I used to have ACL problems and I wear an athletic bandage for that. But after playing if I kneel down on my knees I.e. pressing on the kneecap they hurt. So I'm assuming I need the lifting the kneecap as well.

depends on how much muscle mass you got. If you are somewhat far from your natural potential (meaning no or very little gym time) it's perfectly possible to burn fat and gain muscle in the beginning. if you're a really muscly dude though, some muscles will go during weight loss, there's no way around it sadly...

Did not see anybody mentioning the alignment of your joints. That may also have an effect, especially, if you have excess of weight on you.

Tennis is hash on your feet no matter how much you weigh, depending on your style to move (ref. Rafa and Fede).

All those abrupt direction changes will take a toll. People with no over weight and smooth moves are best off.

Stepping excercise will help and put your feet into positions, where they can comply to the movement, required to play.

Million different factors but I experienced extreme knee pain for years and couldn't even walk in the mornings to the point I'd have to walk awkardly on the outside feet point down.

1) you need to strengthen the ankles and knees, yes the ankles because it affects how you move. I also twisted my ankle badly so I started to move differently to compensate that this made 1 knee hurt more, it also affected my usual running and if you run thousands of misagligned steps your back get knackerd also.

2) I used these gel inserts, fell for the gimmicks I own probably 50 different insoles the gel inserts are super hard when compressed. The foam is much easier on the knees.
