Well, it wasn't a jab at you, but a jab at North American mindsets.

I've seen it a million times! North American women will always call another girl beautiful when they have 'classic beauty', ie definitely not anyone who would be considered sexy and grab attention from current or future boyfriends/husbands.

But when Ms. Sexpot does enter the room, a conversation will occur amongst many women that has the intention of devalueing her in an attempt to level the playing field, and making themselves feel better.

I know many women who fall into that category. Myself, I have some very beautiful friends and have no issue at all having them around a b/f. I don't surround myself with less attractive people so that I will shine above all else - I actually do not even consider looks when picking friends believe it or not. But I do hear what you are saying.
As for making fun of people, I always will slam someone for their personality or actions but won't criticise on looks - either way.

I have seen a lot of players up close and although Maria is pretty, she wasn't really that stunning. Believe it or not, Elena Dementieva was more stunning when I saw her.

Hmm, I don't read that in the poll. All I can find it asking, is about MS' attractiveness, nothing about the top 2 percentile. What really blows my mind is that some of y'all actually voted that MS "is not particularly attractive at all", specially after you posted the pic in post #77!!! Hey, y'all tell me WHERE, geographically speaking, MS isn't/wouldn't be particularly attractive, and that's where I want to move to! 'Cause I guarantee you, compared to the girls I'm used to looking at/playing tennis with, she is a full-blown HOTTIE!!:grin:

What is this garbage? I don't knowingly edit after someone responds based on their response, or based on what I read after I post. That's nonsense. I edit frequently, but never as some sort of "trick". I have no problem responding in a new post to something someone says, as I'm sure you well know. Plus, I often don't even see responses to my posts right away -- I even occassionally notice odd blips on this website, wherein new posts seem to suddenly appear wedged in between posts I've already read. Very strange.

I often ask myself that question Armand, and simply make allowances for others on their shortcomings. After all, not everyone can be me (but they can certainly strive to no?) and I take this into consideration. I have been called one-of-a-kind before and never know quite how to respond. ;)

My response to the poll was not based on the poll in itself but to the thread this poll is based on as Heycal pointed out somewhere near the beginning. I do not think she is hideous by any stretch (although her personality does appear to lack, well...personality). I just do not feel she is in the top two percentile of beautiful women in the world which was the original assertion.

I didn't say she was in the top 2% of "beautiful women in the world", I said she was in the top 2% of ALL women, and suggested that if one were to stand in Grand Central Station at rush hour, say, and watch thousands of normal everyday women stream by us, Miss Sharapova would be more attractive than 98% of them. Now, I may be willing to budge ever so slightly on this 98% figure if you want to negotiate, but don't come back to me with any offers below something in the 90's or it will show you're not serious about making a deal here.

I think Sharapova is above average, but not the hottest. For tennis players, both pro and amateur, she's probably near the top though.

Some are easily impressed, and I guess that says more about the poor/odd/bad/frightening appearance of the majority of pro ladies that someone like Sharapova could get so much unwarranted praise for her appearance. As I posted in another thread about her:

"...a flat butt, very high hips, a small, underdeveloped upper torso (read: small breasts) and broad shoulders is anything but "well built". ...and that's not even getting into her Euro-peasant features of the inverted, triangular head and eyes too close together..."

Sharapova is not even up to average level on the streets.

How often do you get to see these women on the streets without makeup and while sweating? I think most women look way less attractive without makeup.

Here's a pic not too glamorous but wearing some makeup. If this isn't up to par with average, then I'd sure like to see you post a pic of an "average" looking woman.

Well having never met her (though i did spy on one of her US Open practice sessions) I must only comment on physical traits (since personality equates to increased sexiness in my book).

GREAT LEGS!!! phenominal - very long and I like that.

GREAT FEET!!! not in the fetish way. I live in Arizona and have been bombarded with evidence that people with ugly feet including twisted toes or bunyons(sp?) should not wear flip flops all-year round. It advertises a negative feature ...and trust me there are many like me who take notice.
Thus a breath of fresh air when Maria does a photoshoot and there is actually something pleasing down there!

The butt... It is toned and fit - enough said. I appreciate it.

Her EYES!! not to much attention there but I saw the SI photoshoot and they seem to be a smoky,but piercing green. I am a sucker for it.

everything else kinda gets lost to me. i don't rank her especially high in my personal book but the above features make her better than 80% of the female population.

When I think average, I think of someone who would not make you look twice. She isn't a perfect 10 obviously, but she is attractive. And that picture could not be anymore unflattering, couldn't it ?

Cause, if I was down at my club and looked over on court 7 to see this:

Your theory only applies if the guy is desperate for anything with a pulse. Look around you--streets of the world have legions of women who are REAL head-turners, with striking or just flat-out, naturally sexy looks; Sharapova is nothing special at all--dog factor applied or not. Pure peasant features.

Most excellent post and accompanying photo, Nick. That should make it game, set, and match, Sharapova ("flat butt", Thundervolley? Me thinks not), but I suspect we're going to hear from some more knuckleheads claiming she's nothing compared to the girls on their tennis courts or in their two-bit city.

Like that other guy, I too saw Sharapova practicing at the US Open -- and she is striking, even from 20 yards away. You see someone like that on the court next to you and you'll pretty much have to cancel your match due to hindrance.

Most of us look around us all day (if for no other reason than to make sure we don't step into traffic), and while we may see some real striking head-turners now and then, 98% of the women we see are not as attractive as Sharapova. I just don't think you guys are being realistic about what women look like in the real world.

haha so if we choose to play in the top 1.9% (since u claim masha is in the top 2%) of the top women we cant do that? and if now ur gonna say masha is in the top 1.9% then i think its not a matter of whether shes attractive or not but more like shes ur taste.. heck if you think that only 2 in every 100 girls u see is as good or better than sharapova then i really don't know what you mean.. we don't even need to go to the streets we can just stay on the wta top 100 i could name names thats more beautiful than her..

What part of "ALL women" do you not understand?

I never said Sharapova was hotter than 98% of professional tennis players, though I do think she is close to that, and more attractive than a few of the girls on your hottie list. I said she was more attractive than 98% of all women in the world.

Let me let you in on a little secret, young fella, something which might come as a surprise to you and others: Female tennis players are, on the whole, more attractive than average women. Yup, MORE attractive, not less.

"But how can this be, Heycal?" you ask. "I thought female athletes were the butt of jokes about not being very attractive looking, or even looking feminine, and have been for decades. Surely you jest!"

Good point, son. They are indeed often joked about as not very good looking. But there is a reason they aren't considered very attractive, bc-05, and the reason is this: They are being compared to other celebrities and images of women in advertising and the media. It's not a level playing field. Female models, actresses, TV anchors and so on have risen to the tops of their professions in large part due to their good looks, while tennis players succeed based on talent alone. Of course Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova and Amelie Mauresmo aren't attractive when compared to the other female celebrities they share space on your TV screen with and in your media-saturated consciousness -- they got famous because of tennis, not because they looked good in a swimsuit or because they had lovely breasts.

And here is the last lesson for you today, young bc-05: There is a reason female athletes are more attractive than average women -- two reasons actually. And these two reasons, the two ingredients most female athletes possess that makes them more attractive than the hordes of women streaming through Times Square, are.... youth and fitness. Youth and fitness contribute greatly to attractiveness, and most pro tennis players are young and fit.

Many female athletes also go through premature aging of skin by being out in the sun all day. By their mid-20s, many female tennis players look well into their 30s.

Also, female tennis players tend to not do a whole lot for their hair. When she has the longish air parting down, it emphasizes her wide, ruddy cheeks rather than her face's nicely oval structure. Plus, because she has just straight, strong brows, which implies a strong, almost masculine, forehead. If she tweaked her brows a bit to emphasize roundness, it would give her a softer look. She could also use some kind of bang structure to soften her forehand.

Maria's best facial profile is her side though. When her face is shot from somewhere between side and 3/4, she's very pretty.

As for aging and the sun, most professional athletes are no longer professional athletes in their 30's and thus out of our sight, so what happens after their prime tennis/looks years is basically irrelevant here.

Sure you've "seen better". We all have. But we've all seen a lot worse -- all the time, everyday. They don't even register in our consciousness or memory banks, as I said in the other thread, but the pretty ones stand out, and those are the women you are thinking of now, Mucat. Your forgetting the counter lady at your local Scotia Optical (ka-ching!) or that chuby clerk at the Esso station where you buy your Molson, and all the rest of the average women whose path crosses with yours on a daily basis.

Nah, it's something I really notice with tennis athletes. My relatives played at Stanford, so pretty much all the tennis players have played since they were kids. In other words, they've been out in the sun a lot. They and the players were really, really, really tanned, and you can already see the splotchiness, spots, and dryness associated with it. Also kinda applies for the guys too.

That said, most college tennis players have nice, lanky bodies. Great legs, tight butt, etc.

Maria has really gorgeous blue eyes, but what happens is that her high cheek structure and square browline creates this very strong horizontal line across the top half of her face. And unfortunately, this is really accentuated because of her tan.

If she had a fairer, softer complexion and some hair to redefine her forehead, she'd look much different.

Phil is probably busy in another thread debating some dreary topic like school prayer or something instead of with us here talking about truly important matters. I have my hands full here anyway countering naysayers and trying to decipher posts almost completely devoid of punctuation, grammar, or comprehensible sentence structure.

But let me clarify one important thing, Canadian Club: I am not in any way "knocking 98% of the women in the world." Maria Sharapova is a very attractive young women, and the fact that she is hotter than 98% of the female population should in no way be taken as a knock against the rest of the women in our society. We are in the process of evaluating attractiveness here, and if you tell me that you think Brad Pitt is hot, I don't take that to mean that you are denigating anyone else in the process.

Well, it's all a joke in the larger sense, sure, but I thought I made some thoughtful and reasoned observations in that post about females, celebrities, fitness, and the interplay between those things, not biased remarks.... Did no one appreciate my analysis in that post?:-(

Doesn't she have predominantly green eyes, Tricky? For a beauty salon owner, I'm not sure how you missed that one...

lol hahha u dont really need to be working in a soho lingerie store.. i promise u.. i was in goldcoast a couple of weeks ago.. and i kid u not i swear on my life.. there were so many goodlooking girls there.. and i was at the surfers paradise beach.. and i kid u not every 2m square on that beach ud spot a much more beautiful girl than maria sharapova.. and im not kidding..

This chick is hot. Sure, she'll have some acne here and there once in awhile, because she sweats her ass off in the sun for hours a day. When in makeup, though, she's really good looking.
