Hewitt totaly disrespected on these boards!

Hewitt does not get nearly enough respect on these boards. It was very annoying to read in those dumb Sampras vs Federer competition threads some of you say Hewitt is not as good as Rafter or even Kafelnikov(what a joke). That is incredably stupid, Lleyton has finished two years at #1 in the World, won Wimbledon and the U.S Open the two biggest slams, won the year end Masters twice . He has obvious head to head advantages vs Rafter and Kafelnikov when both were in their primes, there is no way guys like that are better then him. He lost to the eventual winner in 7 straight slams at one point, in addition to his 2 slams. Agassi was still close to his peak in 2001 and 2002, and Hewitt had winning head to head with him and beat him out for the year end #1 both times even though Agassi admited trying to get it. When Agassi beat Hewitt at the 2002 U.S Open it was considered a huge win, and a surprise to alot of people, and Agassi was arguably in his prime at that point. You could say without Federer this guy would have won a boatload of slams, you cant say that about players like Rafter, Kafelnikov, and Stich the same way. You could say it about Ivanisevic at Wimbledon but nowhere else, he is a 1 slam threat unlike Hewitt.

Of course most of you probably do realize Hewitt is better then these players you are trying to put him below, since those Federer vs Sampras debates are nothing more then manipulation by both the Federer and Sampras fans to diminish the quality of the players in Federer or Sampras's time, and inflated the quality of players in the Federer and Sampras time to make their favorite look better. Since this board is full of Sampras fanboys, and Federer kills Hewitt unfortunately, most of you want to discredit how great a player he is to try and make Federer look worse compared to Sampras is all. It is pretty pathetic in the end, and certain players end up getting the short end of the respect stick.

Some ppl will agree that HEWITT came along at the right time (COURIER-like).


He's a good player but I personally wouldn't call him great. Obviously he must have got better over the years but he's just been left behind.

i always like to see him play and fight, it's a good thing he's on tour but what's wrong with his attitude, last week in the davis cup against Belgium in the doubles match he had several net balls in his favour, he didnt even appologise, why the hell he do that? its just a simple gesture...

DUnno, didnt notice that. But i wouldnt base an attitude on such a little thing. Mabe he was pissed off at the belgiums raising their finger in the air each time they won a point. Whats with that. Did you see the fight he showed in the Davis cup, what a match versus Rochus.

I think hes been losing more than he used to mainly due to his average serve.
It gets picked on too much. Theres just too much pressure when youre serving average all of the time. He just needs to start winning more of those tight matches he used to win. Also he used to play best when he had a lot of matches, but he seems to be disrupted with injuries a lot now.

But i think he'll be back in the top 10 soon.

Hewitt won the 2001 US Open & 2002 Wimbledon titles. That puts him on par with Sergi Bruguera, Johann Kriek, Ilie Nastase, and some other 2-time winners.

I think he's getting his just rewards.

Bah, He was a strong number 2 in 2004 2005 but the best tennis player in the history of tennis was number 1. If it wasn't for Fed Hewitt would have been a solid number 1 for those years.

Hewitt is not only totally disprespected on this board, he is also disrespected by his fellow players, the Aussies and the Aussie media, tennis fans, and no doubt his former coach who he dispresected in the middle of a match.

You wonder why no one likes hewitt?

It's because he's a rude, loud mouth, cranky person, to name a few of his negative qualities.

People have a hard time getting past his persona to talk about his tennis achievements.

Here's a positive. He is a stauch Davis Cup player.

Normally it'd be his personality but I think a lot of it is also his game.

No flashy shots..hmm excellent passer (maybe the best) and a great returner.

Counter punching style just doesn't get a lot of respect.

Federer put it best just after the AO win.
"I expected Gonzales to beat Hewitt, but was shocked to hear to defeated Nadal".

It's obvious what Federer thinks of Hewitt. Not much!

He came along just in time to become number 1 for two years. Give the guy some credit. Todd Martin said the best shot he ever faced in tennis was Leyton's backhand down the line. We've been spoiled with the likes of Sampras and Federer, it's tough for some of us to believe a number 1 is truly a world champ unless they thoroughly dominate for many years. Leyton was a worthy number 1. His type of game and intensity is tough to maintain though. Lets see how long Nadal stays in the top 3.

For someone to maintain #1 for more than a few months, is indeed a "worthy number 1" no matter the circumstances (he was obviously doing something right). It's just that when I saw him play, it was never exciting like SAMP/AGASSI/FED.

If he just celebrated when HE hits a good shot on an important point, instead of when his oOPPONENT tanks on an important point I could like him.

He's just to much of an a__hole on court.

He's the Martina Hingis of men's tennis. He had his moments in between the reigns of bigger and better players. He get's all the respect someone of his accomplishments and temperment deserve. Maybe more.

I never considered him a great player. He was a very good player for a few years who was able to reach # 1 in the world with hard work on the court. The game has definitely left him behind though. The guy has no fire power.

But he does have a winning record against Roddick. :)

I like Hewitt too. He's had some injuries and whatnot, but he's a worthy competitor and on a side note, when he was beating Federer like a runaway slave, or even Andy for that matter. He was never bragging or boastful about it. Hewitt has a lot more class than he's given credit for!

So much of Hewitt's strength was his speed+quickness. After about 22(or even earlier), you'll start to get slower. This is why Hewitt has peaked and why Nadal is at his peak right now(more or less).

I don't know if that was a throwaway line or what....but that was brilliant. Right down to the litigiousness.

[Hingis sued Sergio Tacchini for her foot problem. Hewitt sued the ATP for his attitude problem]yeah yeah yeah.........{I'm just paraphrasing}

Anyway, props to Hewitt. He's a fighter. I'm not a fan of his game or his public persona, but I have a lot of respect for his effort level and his intensity. Plus, he does not shy away from Davis Cup duty. In fact, he does as all professionals should -- he considers it an honor to play for his country.

Why would he apologize for net cords in his favor? Did he do something bad or wrong by hitting a ball that clipped the net?

Net cords are part of the game, and I don't like to see players apologize for them (particularly since it strikes me as a phony gesture -- do you think these guys are truly sorry they just won the point that way?) MAYBE on match point I can see extending a gesture of sympathy if you win on a shot like that, but otherwise, I don't think one should apologize for hitting them and never whine when they are hit against you. In fact, you could even argue that one should be congratulated for hitting a net cord winner -- it means you so perfectly hit the shot that it just clipped the net and fell in for a winner. And if it falls back on your side, well, then you didn't hit the ball high or hard enough to make it to the other side, and tough luck for you.

no disrespect but i guess you didnt see the match so you cant comment then, you're right about he doesnt have to appologise but EVERYBODY does and its a gesture of being polite, anyway i like Hewitt and love his fighting but a little more mature wouldnt be too much to ask. if you respect your apponent you appologise. anyway, still i believe its a good guy, just on court he's a bull, i remember he was here with clijsters and she said he such a calm guy, very relaxed and polite... untill he's in the arena ;-)

Looks like hewitt doesn't, and the above poster doesn't unless it's match point, and many friends i know. Although cheering on a net could imo would be rude then.

But on the side note, I'd like to see Hewitt around the top again, love watching scramblers.

This doesn't strike me as a "you had to be there" moment. Unless your description of the event was severly lacking and left out key details, it seems a pretty simple matter. You said he didn't apologize for net cord points like many other pros do. I say he doesn't need to, and furthermore, I find his not apologizing preferable to the typical phony attitude of "Gee, I'm really sorry I just won the point this way through no fault of my own, and I'm only accepting it because the rules state I must..." Hell, I'd rather see a guy celebrate a net cord instead of pretending he's sorry for it.

i understand what your saying but at the moments he had those netballs his face was like "eat this"! i know its davis cup and emotions are a part of the game but still, i mean the day after against Rochus he appologized for netballs. (the crowd was more involved)

again i have absolutely nothing against Hewitt but i just think a little more sportsmanship would be appropriate.

If you think he grinds as much as Nadal or Hewitt, you haven't watched 1 second of tennis(or you're brain cannot process the visual information it is viewing).

And because Federer isn't a grinder, his legs are still in ok shape for the times he does need to grind out a point here and there. By the time Nadal is Fed's age, you'll be sticking a fork in him.

I'm not a big Vliegen fan eighter but let me tell you, that guy is very nice, he doesnt think he's the man.(what people may think) ok that finger thing was kinda strange but infact its like a pumped fist, you have to admit he played one hell of a match,

very cool video! i heard Lendl did that quite often...
