Poly tour pro breaking on me like no tomorrow?!

Hey guys, I am a semi-professional player ranked around 2000. I use poly tour pro and really like the string, so much so that I have been putting up with its lack of duribility for some time now!

I originally used the 1.25 version, but it broke on me every 45-60 mins. I just couldn't deal with having to restring that often, so I eventually went for the 1.30. However this only lasts marginally longer! I get about 1.5 hrs max, sometimes less. I'm pretty sure this is not down to my stringing, as I have also had it strung by tournament stringers on the road and it breaks just as fast. I have to go into matches with so many racquets strung to be sure I'll have enough to last if it goes to 3 sets.

Another thing: I prefer 1.25 guage. I used 1.3 in poly Tour Pro because I had to, but I have always prefered the feel of 1.25.

So if you know of a string in 1.25 vaguely similar in feel to Poly Tour Pro, but more durable then that would be ideal! Someone recomended I try rpm blast, but it's kind of expensive. Although if it lasts longer then it will save me money in the long run!

Cheers!

What racket are you using? I have a college guy that is about 750-800 ATP based on summer tournaments that is using it and not having durability problems.

I haven't strung an angell so I don't know how open the pattern is, but maybe the pattern density is the problem. Or you just got a bad reel. How are you storing them? My guy plays an Ezone 98. Not super tight but fairly dense in the middle.

I store them inside, so at room temperature. And I have been using this string for two years, and must have gone through 20 reels, so its wasn't just a bad batch unfortunately. My racquet has a reasonably open pattern, so I'm sure that's a contributing factor, but its not the be all and end all. A slightly more durable string would really help so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Are you stringing one piece or two piece. I ask because on all of the Angells there are some tight areas due to overlaps and blocked grommets (with a two piece job).

its the racquet pattern!!, 16/19 is open pattern on a big racquet which = string eater racquets for some players
you need to look into changing to a tighter pattern racquet, 18/20,16/20, 18/19 etc, etc.. racquet pattern
i know a college player breaking 16/19s in days,, he switched to 18/20, same racquet model, now breaks after 3 weeks
anyway, good luck

I don't break poly nearly as fast as you, but I switched over to 18x20 quite a few years ago to get more life out of strings. It just about doubled the string life for me back then. I don't play nearly as much now, mostly teaching, so I hardly ever break strings any more it seems, but I was very happy I made the switch back then.

PTP was the worst string I have used in the past 5 years so I don't know what to recommend.

The weird thing about it is that it plays MUCH better in more open racquets. If he switched to an 18x20 and strung with PTP it would be like hitting the ball with a Teflon coated frying pan.

FWIW to the OP I broke full ALU in 45 minutes of drilling and at my peak was going through 10 stringjobs per week.

I tried Kevlar and that ended up breaking my racquets and so I have settled on The Jolly Rig II, Luxilon Big Banger Original mains and ALU crosses.

I've been using it for maybe 6 years now?

Wilson Revolve could be a good option. It's still pretty soft and tension maintenance is great. Also comes in 15 gauge.

If you don't have arm problems, why not RPM blast at 15g a la Nadal?

Whoops, just saw the part about it being expensive. Well, if it lasts you longer isn't it cheaper in the long run?

Try some Babolat Elastocross string savers in the sweet spot first. A pattern similar to what Federer uses is what I use. You may find that you have to drop your tension a pound or two to get the same racquet feel as before using string savers. They will help you get some more life out of the strings and you may even prefer the feeling of having them in.

Have recently gone from playing with RF97’s primarily to Wilson 6.1 95 18x20’s for just this reason. Tired of stringing all the time and have better control with the 18x20.

the NEW (2019) wilson ultra.tour.95 is a 16/20!, imo 16/20 pattern is a good compromise between a 16/19 & 18/20,, but initial reported weight and specs will need some modification with lead to beef up the frame to your liking
im kinda waiting to hit with this one, maybe sometime soon

That will be an interesting frame. Have found that I play best with frames somewhere between 12.2 to 12.6 and head light. Have tried many times over the years to take lighter frames and get them to there but the feel just isn’t right. Have had better results starting with a frame in that range and then tweak them a bit.

Tecnifibre ATP Razor Code in carbon is muted, durable, and has low to medium power. The blue one is higher powered and would require higher tension, which brings lower durability. It's worth a look.
