Well Halep withdrew so I decided not to count her, it'd be like counting Serena for all those years she never bothered turning up to the YEC. I just chose the 8 who played and my points stands.

You can make excuses for players like going to school or just got married or **** like that but if they had truly given up then they'd retire. I'm sure Kerber and Wozniacki wish they were still qualifying and they'd definitely play the tournament but they're not, they're losing in the 3rd set of a 1R in Wuhan. Just a fact.

You used the word "qualifiers" which includes Halep whether or not she played the tournament hence my comment.

As for Kerber and Woz... it's no surprise to me and no excuse at all (none needed) since they are nearing the end of their careers for one reason or another and last year was probably the last good season for both. It's simply the natural course for every player.... Add Sharapova and Azarenka to that list. They all are former #1, GS winners, champions of the past but they crossed the point of no return towards the end of the road. Probably they will stick around for few more seasons but I would not expect to see them being a contender at the top anymore or still playing in their mid-30s. We'll probably witness the same for Kvitova, Halep and Pliskova in the next 2 years or so.

These girls, like most Europeans, are looking forward to having a life after tennis and I mean while they are still young not in their 40s.

On the other hand, the deeps for players like Muguruza and Stephens is something to talk about as they are still in their prime years.

Already knew woz lost even though it was just 0-0 (0-15) on her serve in third. I predicted for her to get broken once she lost the first point on her serve. Prediction was spot on. Have seen that story too many times before.

Just to be clear, in Simona's case, it was not a case of not bothering to show up. After playing the finals in Canada & Cincy back-to-back, she withdrew from New Haven and did not fare well at all in NY the following week. Tried to play Wuhan and China Open (retired 1R) but was definitely off her game. A subsequent MRI revealed a herniated disk. Withdrew from Kremlin Cup and took off the rest of the year.

I'm dead tired so there's no chance of me staying up... Maybe I'll randomly wake up and catch the match...

I'm still confused as to if Basiclina improved her serve or if she was always capable of 105mph+, but when I wake up I want to see total destruction of that serve (and Garbi to hold her own serve).

Halep is barely 6 months older than Sloane so to say that Simona will go down in the next 2 years while Sloane is in her prime is ludicrous.

Everyone is different. Caroline broke through at 20, Kerber had her slam breakthrough at 28, Stosur had hers around 25, Andreescu at 18.

People said Kerber was done in 2017 after her dismal year following her brilliant 2016, then 2018 was a success and 2019 has been mediocre. Trying to predict when people are declining is foolish. The only one I can genuinely say is probably nearing their end is Wozniacki. Finally got her slam, backed it up with another Premier Mandatory title. Got married, unfortunately has arthritis. She'll probably go down the Ivanovic path soon but all of the others, who knows.

There's something about Wuhan for Sabalenka. Destroys Collins (who beat Venus yesterday) 6-0 6-1.

Defending champ into the 3R.

So good to see her play so well.

#4 Halep also through after knocking out Wimbledon SFist Strycova in straights.

How do you define "junk"?
It doesn't sound flattering.

Personally I'd rather see Hsieh play (win or lose) than those that lack the skill to change a losing game.

In other news, Muguruza is out to Svitolina in straight sets.

Halep: Sept 27, 1991

That's 17 months and 21 days.....

Halep stated in multiple occasions in TV talk shows and interviews in Romanian media that she wants to start a family for herself and have few kids while she is still young. That, combined with a bit of knowledge about the culture within the minority group she belongs to, makes it very plausible that she will not have a very long professional career. Probably another 2, maybe 3 good seasons is the most I would count from her if I were to guess.

Yeah. Su Wei serve is junk but her game is not. In fact Su Wei is rarely playing moonballs. Slice is not a junk.

Gee I was off by a year, point still stands. You're tipping Halep who's 27 to retire soon and then saying the same for Kerber who's 32. Stosur's 35 and still going, Venus is 39, Kuznetsova is 34. Clijsters retired at 25, Kournikova at 21. Nobody knows when a player will retire. Stop trying to predict it.

Also what was the rationale of her getting a wildcard? I mean it paid off but a young Kazakh player getting a WC for a Premier 5 tournament? She retired last week in her first match of Guangzhou after having made the final in Jiangxi.

I caught the second set of that match. Kiki is a fighter, but Sabalenka is such a beast. That tiebreaker was epic!! The defending champ had better clean up her game if she expects to keep advancing.
