The Shape Of Things To Come: Denis Shapovalov!

Good for Dennis getting another top 10 win against Z today. He kinda threw that second set away today, but he managed to keep it together in the third.

Playing against LaMonf tomorrow. As a certain Spanish player would say, "gonna be a tough match, no?" Playing Monfils in Paris is going to be a daunting task, but I think he has a shot. Their US Open match was close, and LaMonf's match ended late against Albot. Youth and an early bed time may yet prove victorious.

I also thought Dennis had just played Monfils twice in two weeks, but that was Sinner... maybe I should look into an early bed time as well.

Calculate more! What outcome vs Le Professeur???

Also, my calculations say Shapo still has a shot at top 11 if he runs the table! He would have had a shot at top 10 if LeMonf had clowned it up vs Paire.
I'd give you my calculations on Shapo against Monfils but the number buttons on my keyboard are still too hot to touch after those buttons predicted the win against Zverev today. I can't explain that phenomenon.

Did not catch today's match until after work. Menace faded a bit in set 2 but was a terror in set one. I think Denis is building his own funhouse. If there is young young guy who I could really enjoy seeing get to the top, it's this one.

Denis has BIG weapons. He has a huge 1st serve, generates effortless power off both wings and has decent net skills. I hope the Shapo-Youzhny partnership continues to grow. And also hope, his mum stays away.

More realistically, if Denis wins today he will hit a new career high in ranking anywhere from 17-19 in the rankings after the tournament (assuming he lost in the semis). He would also make his 4th Masters 1000 semifinal, his second of the year (a first for him).

Denis has to play doubles before his single match against Monfils.
It should be not easy emotionally to play two matches in the row without a break.

With scheduling like that, its no wonder the top players never play doubles anymore.

It would've been zero trouble to put him on first and he'd already be done. Maybe the organizers are trying to help the hometown favorite in Monfils? Be a little more subtle, messieurs! :p

Oh I'm so jealous of raph6 for being able to watch in person. That was an epic beatdown of Monfils. Revenge for the USO! More of this, please! Maybe he could even beat Rafa? Of course, Nadal has to beat Tsonga still.

Wow, that's a big prediction. I don't like to predict, it makes me nervous, LOL. But, I'd love it if Tsonga could take out you know who. Still, Denis would have to beat Djokovic and he will be on fire too.

You are looking too far ahead. Shapo is probably not going to beat Nadal. But this is a great result already. Looking good for a better 2020.

Wow. Denis added a bit of consistency with a pinch of holding-back, and he dismantatled a good Monfils playing at home. Youzhny already made a huge impact. This is the Denis the tennis world is waiting for, and he could still improve so much. Top 10 in 2020? Highly likely when playing like this.

I would love to see him win the NextGen title. Although I'd rather he had the Paris title, LOL. One step at a time though. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. This is the tennis we've been waiting for, the tennis we knew he was capable of playing. There is still work to do, but the foundation is there. Always wishing him well. BTW, he's still in the doubles too.

Denis and Youzhny really should focus on this match and emulate it more. Playing like this (with the patience, point construction, and not pulling the trigger too soon), not many can beat this Denis. If he can add a slice/block return to ensure that he can stay in more points on return, watch out!

It’s The Nadal in the SF.

He was headed into a Superbreaker for SFs in the dubs but they were broken at 5-2, second set. Let’s go!

Stinks for Milan, if FAA or ADM pull out it’s going to start feeling like NextGen 2nd and 3rd tier.

FAA has already pulled out.
I was at the match today also, I won’t be able tomorrow cause I have a tournament but this was again fabulous tennis by Denis. Despite being French, it seemed to me the crowd was appreciating his tennis and if he can get to the top, he will be very popular.

So glad to here you were there @raph6 ! It sounded like the crowd was appreciative, even if their "guy" was taken down. Thanks for sharing your view on the atmosphere.

Will the Shapovalov-Youzhny partnership take out the Bull? Interesting measuring stick for the young canadian.

Clearly The Bull definitely has the upper hand, and is favoured to win. But I know that Denis will not presume that and he will go for it. That's one of the things I like about him.
Never presume. Who knows what might happen?

Today’s one-sided win should give him a nice injection of confidence for tomorrow and he’ll be fresh for what will be the hardest task.

Shapo's been pretty consistent since the end of the summer, actually. I think if he wins only 2 games that would be a very bad result.

I would expect the "most likely/average" case is that Shapo keeps it close but can't quite win.

And obviously if he wins it's great. He's certainly playing well enough to have a shot, if he takes advantage of this being Nadal's weakest surface.

This is what I like about Denis....win or lose, this is how he responds to the opponent across the net. (and how he deals with children and the media -- are they the same group?)

That is genuine.
And, he is out there taking no prisoners.

Agree. And who knows if he might have a good day or a bad day? Shapo might only win 2 games. And even that wouldn't be surprising. But I don't mind looking at the upside surprise.....
Keep being optimistic, there are grounds for it:

The other lefty Nadal played this week lost 5&4; Mannarino had a decent week in Moscow but lost his final while Shapo got that elusive first title in Stockholm. Shapo could very well improve on the Frenchman’s result.

Nadal’s set scores until Tsonga faded tonight have been TB or one-break differences.

He has played and beaten Nadal on HC and that was well before he added the nuances that Youzhny has added.

While Shapo is the decided underdog, it just doesn’t seem like he will roll over and I’m not sure Nadal has an extra gear he wants to exhaust before the final.

I’m not betting cash but I did take the long shot extra points for a Power Play League upset.

And the main plus for Denis is that Nadl won't have that huge CC FH advantage he normally has against most righties. Denis showed a great game against Monfils. Shadal should be good.

He just needs to have that first serve working. Nadal is winning 22% of return points on first serve but a big 62% of second serve points. Serving in the 60% range and defending better than Mannarinkaonga will make this a match.

Also, in 2019 Shapo has cleaned up his horrible record in 2018 vs fellow lefties to a perfect 4-0. There’s no mental block like last year when he lost to five lefties in a row beginning with Nadal in Rome.

So Nadal has withdrawn from the semi-finals in Paris, leaving Shapo to face Djokovic on Sunday in what will be the Canadian's first Masters Series 1000 final. Hopefully Denis will be able to play his best tennis against the world no. 1.

Well, unexpected events today. Denis goes into the final on a walk over as Rafa is out with a sudden injury. I certainly didn't want him to go into the final this way, but it's a two-part gift. One, he gets to his first Master's final and second, he gets an extra day's rest as he's out of the doubles. His ranking will go up to 17 or higher.
