Looks like the Millman strat was to go for Federer's forehand, take advantage of the fact that Federer is slower now, and his tendency to camp his backhand side leaves his forehand vulnerable. I think it worked. What it came down to at the end was basically just luck. 50/50 chances. I don't like this type of tiebreak to be honest. Players should keep going until one is a clear winner.

Whenever I read comments like that it's basically saying "be passive, don't fight and just let Federer completely dominate you". Makes zero sense to me.

I do overreact, but I do have zero trust in Fed after Wimb 2019 and a tough win over a journeyman won't change that.

Not enough credit being given to Millman at the end of this thread. The guy came to play, pulled off some great shots, and came up short. It's not like Fed played like garbage and Millman just gave it to him from 4-8 in that tiebreak. And getting there in the first place was a function of a well executed plan by Millman. How many guys can pull that off? Very few. Good match, Millman. I only wish you played as well against the field as you do against Fed. You'd be higher ranked.

Federer might win the title now. Just like it happened in Shanghai 2014. He was very, very lucky to beat Mayer, but then completely outplayed prime Djokovic (who didn't play bad by any means) in the semifinals.

I'm glad it's a super tiebreak in the 5th for just this reason, that is, exciting changes in momentum and big comebacks, not because Federer won. I think all the majors should adopt tiebreaks to 10 in the 5th.

Djokovic looked scary against Nishioka. Now I'm not handing him the title because there is a lot of tennis to be played, but he is just playing better at the moment. He is also battle tested. If he keeps up this level, he has to be a strong favorite plus he's playing in his favorite arena and in conditions that suit him more than some others in the draw. Shanghai is fast conditions and BO3 which is entirely different.
