Je préférerais que les athlètes (en particulier les milliardaires) fassent leur don de manière plus discrète, bien que l'important sera toujours l'acte d'aider les personnes dans le besoin et avec moins de ressources.

So, these donations should be anonymous ? :)

As Rob Reich, professor of Political Science at Standford University, says in his book Just Giving: Why Philanthropy Is Failing Democracy and How It Can Do Better:

"Foundations are an unaccountable, nontransparent, perpetual, and lavishly tax-advantaged exercise of power."

Big philanthropy is often an exercise of power, the conversion of private assets into public influence. And it is a form of power that is largely unaccountable, often perpetual, and lavishly tax-advantaged. The affluent—and their foundations—reap vast benefits even as they influence policy without accountability. And small philanthropy, or ordinary charitable giving, can be problematic as well. Charity, it turns out, does surprisingly little to provide for those in need and sometimes worsens inequality.

look like white nationalism to me. Swiss are predominantly white. He needs to divide it up equally among countries with people of color. Racist White Nationalist funding. Might as well buy some slaves while he is at it.

another Federer Fail.

I am joking of course. Its a nice gesture.

A great gesture, but I do wonder why these people choose to announce it to the world. Just do it anonymously.

this way, Federer gets to varnish his public persona and feed his boundless arrogance, while the less successful bankers of Switzerland get to keep drinking Moët et Chandon (the 2004 vintage, if it were up to Fed -- it reminds him of his excellence) along with their raclette instead of stooping to undrinkable stuff like Martini Asti through these already trying times.

Everyone wins, I don't see the problem

You didn’t say if or think it since you didn’t have the slightest clue he said it.

On the one hand I entirely agree.

On the other hand if part of the reason of announcing it is to publicly shame other super-rich people into doing something to help out then I guess it's worth doing.

It could be worse, he could be doing the tennis player equivalent of that awful Imagine sing-a-long - wouldn't it just be great for all those people drowning in their own lung fluids to know that tennis players the world over had put together a video where they did an imaginary rally?

how much did you donate
This is great that he feels responsible and more sportsmen (who wouldn't be rich if we didn't love their sport, if Roger played ping pong he wouldn't be able to give such money even if more talented and more generous) should do as Roger.
But you can't count in absolute terms. When I give 10 euros to a homeless man, I am being more generous than Roger because in my life every euro matters.

$1 million is $1 million. I’m sure the charity getting this money is more than happy to receive the donation. Most celebrities I see on social media aren’t doing much more than holding up a sign saying who they’re staying home for.

No one million is not one million. Great for the charity yes, but if you give it while having 10 millions in your bank account your are being more generous than if you have one billion.
Otherwise you can argue than if you are rich you are a better person.

Helpful translation: "I would prefer that athletes (and particularly millionaires) donate more discreetly, but the important thing will always be the act of helping people in need and with less fewer resources."

I agree.
