Highest ranked player you ever faced?

In a tournament. I was reading Trav's thread and i saw some of the posts.

For me its this guy. 4th match in two days, i was tired. He beat me 3-4 in the quarters of a money tournament. Wasnt ranked 66 when i played him

In my senior year of high school, I faced a freshman that was ranked something like 150 nationally. He beat me 6-0 6-0, but I was up 40-0 once or twice so I like to think he was petrified.

I played a Finnish guy last year twice in two consecutive quarterfinals (over-50s)... lost 6/0 6/0 then 6/1 6/1. I doubt if either match lasted more than 40 minutes. Both matches were a waste of time for the both of us. The only bright spots were that he won both tournaments (beating the same former ITF #1 each time) and lost in the semi-finals of the World Championships (to the winner) the following week. He was ranked #2 in the ITF over-50s after the WCs.

Got beat 6-1, 6-1 by a nice guy called Damien Connolly back in 2016 (I think) in the quarters of an O35 tournament in North London. He later went on to win the British seniors O40's mens closed grass court championships in 2018. Really good experience. Could of been 2-0 first set with me 1-0 and had him 15-40 on his serve. He then went up several gears and should of charged me a lesson fee.

More recently in the O45's national club champs, 2018, my partner and I played a good club in the R16 and we beat the then British number 4 player and his partner 6-2, 6-3 in a doubles match. He was from a grass court club and we had home advantage so I stuck them on the clay and ground the match out. Again really nice guy and loved the experience.

I played Jan-Michael Gambill (career high ATP #14) in juniors. Lost 6-2, 6-3. I only held serve once, as trying to serve-and-volley every serve first and second fed into his strength - his return. I broke serve 4 times because his second serve bounced high and slow enough that I could chip and charge and other stuff. Every time his service game went to deuce (with no-ad scoring) he hit a flat first-serve ace winner out wide. His net game was atrocious for a player his level, so I had some success drawing him forward and making him volley. Did I mention he was 13 years old?

My friend was a very good s%v player from cali. He lost to chang (16) 2-3 and said he had the best passing shots he had ever seen. Guy was good, he played a touranment in gainesville and beat 5 of UF's top 6 players to win the money.

Pretty sure he bageled me. This was the 12 and under Santa Barbara Junior championships. Chang was entering every possible tournament so a lot of people wondered why he came so far north for a dinky non SCTA sanctioned tourney. Back then the big name SCTA JR tourneys like Whittier were way more big time than this SB tourney. My buddy got destroyed by him as well in the next round.

Chang was truly a legit 5.0/5.5 in the 12/under. Sounds ridiculous but god damn he won the French a few years later. Lol.

Everyone else in the SCTA 12s was 4.0 compared to him. Chuckle Adams, Michael Joyce, Jon Swano Jonny Leach were all obliterated by Chang back then. He was a fuchen beast.

Played Jean-Philippe Fleurian in the early 80's when he was 17/18 yrs old and a month before our match, he reached the semi-final of the Orange Bowl. I learned this right before our match warm-up as he opened his bag and I noticed several brand new Prince Graphite OS racquets. I said, "wow, that is a bunch of new Prince racquets". He replied with a very nice french accent, "yes, a Prince rep gave me them after I lost my Orange Bowl semi-final match". Well, I knew I was in a match and very, very quickly lost 6-0, 6-0. And to add insult to injury, after our hand shake he politely asked "can you stay for a few more minutes so I can get a good warm-up". I just wanted to get the hell out of there due to my embarrassment. I can't recall my excuse but I bolted. I still get a kick out of this each time I think about our match, using match very loosely. I followed his career and he reached 37th in the world and had wins over, Becker in Miami-the old Lipton Tournament, Edberg, and Agassi.

How old were they at the time of the matches? And how old were you?

They were either 18-19, were good itf junior players on their way to the pro's. I think kim may of had a couple atp points at the time. We used to get really good players in the open here. Saddlebrook, bolliteri's and other big dev centers are an hour or two away.

Micheal russel won my old clubs tournament a while ago. Dudi sela won it as well, he won doubles too with someone who is good on the pro tour, big blonde guy.

I got to play one of agassi's hitting partners as well, i was dead tired in the third so we chatted alot, nice guy :) Agassi was a huge D to people outside of his circle, but he told me treats those inside like family. Anything you want

In badminton singles (back in the 1980s), I faced a player who was ranked #4 in the US. This guy later reached #1 and played singles in the '92 Olympics. He might have also played doubs in one or two Olympics as well. Chris Jogis was his name.

He easily beat me 15-0 in the first game. I felt no real pressure... I just treated it as a good warmup for the subsequent rounds. It was a fairly easy warmup for him, but I was able to move him around the court a fair amount.

In the 2nd game against him, I decided to up my game and try to win some points. I went from 2/3 effort in the 1st game to better than 90% in the 2nd. Did not push myself all the way to 100% for the whole game cuz I needed to leave something in the tank for the next 2 rounds (guaranteed). Lost that 2nd game, 15-4. Was ecstatic to have won those four points -- esp since this was the old classics scoring where you could only win points on your own serve.

For tennis, probably the highest level I came across in competition was a 5.5+ NTRP level (former 6.0+ level). Got a number of points but not very many games. My wicked lefty serve was really the only thing that got me the 3 games that I won.
