Zverev On Ferrer: ‘I Can’t Ask For More’

Seems to be going well so far:

"He is exactly how he was on court. He is like that as a coach. I can’t ask for more,” said Zverev. “He was known as the biggest fighter, the biggest competitor in the world… He is overachieving every single expectation I had of him as a coach. It is amazing.”

“Working with Ferrer] is great. Honestly, I have to say for me, that partnership so far is one of the best partnerships I have had,” said Zverev. “Our personalities are extremely similar, which you wouldn’t think because of our game styles and how we are on court.

“We get along super well and during the European swing he is going to be there. Unfortunately, he couldn’t come here but I am excited for what is ahead for us.”

“He came immediately with a notebook and said, ‘Okay, this, this, this and that’. He is extremely organised,” said Zverev. “We would practise together and if he sees after two hours of practice that I am not doing this or that well, he would go on YouTube and be spending time looking at videos from two or three years ago [to see] what I was doing better back then, what I am doing better now, how I improved and how my body developed.”

“He is doing all sorts of things to just really improve my game and that is something very special. He just quit a year ago in Madrid and he is so into it already. I have enjoyed it and I have loved every second of it so far.”

Going very well so far, but no match play to test things yet. What happens when the losses come in? That’s the true test.

They're in the honeymoon period, Zverev should be talking ecstatically after only working with Ferrer 2 weeks. Zverev talked up JFC and Lendl when they first came on board too, but those relationships lasted for very short times. Zverev has never been able to hang on to any coach he's ever worked with (except his father). Let's see if Ferrer is still with Zverev in 6 months. Based on Zed's history, it's doubtful.

I hope it goes well! Somebody has to win besides the big 3 at some point.

I guess?

But if Fed is any indication- it could still be many years before Djokdal start to fall off.

Very promising stuff. It sounds like he is back on track.

I hope it works out for them. He is my favorite in this age group. I want him to beat Thiem, Medvedev and Tsitsipas in the future years. I always thought Zverev had huge potential... you don't beat Federer, Nadal and Djokovic in straight sets in the ATP finals just like that. Nor you win 2 M1000 at 20yo, beating Federer and Djokovic in final. His biggest problem has always been in the head (mental)... When he has problems extra tennis, his quickly affects his game and sometimes when he is losing a match he doesn't even try to fight back. I'm sure Ferrer can only help him for that. Not that Ferrer was the strongest player in the head, but he was a fighter, he never gave up and he always believed in himself and his capacities... and he was a smart, savy guy, I'm sure he'll give Zverev good advices and improve confidence/faith. He can only benefit from this collaboration...

Finally a coach with a brain. The 2nd serve alone could be the subject of a masters thesis with the slide starting with JCF and worsening with Lendl.:sneaky:

Lendl and JFC are notorious slackers. Zverev has no time for such losers.

I’m glad ferrer is pulling up old videos bc zverev seemed pretty good leading up to Canada 2018.

Not that Ferrer has had much of a chance to imprint himself on Zverev yet, but in the 3+ years since Zverev broke out has anyone noticed any change to his game? Serious question. He worked with JCF, he worked with Lendl, and he has plenty of experience playing all kinds of top pros now. But does he actually do anything better now than when he was 20? Any sort of different tactics that my untrained eye isn't picking up on?

His game is actually worse than what it was in 2017
