They have every reason in the world to laugh now. This would have happened to none of Federer and Nadal. Nadal would most likely never hit a ball away in frustration, and Federer in his worst mood would try to hit it out of the stadium, but he would never hurt anyone.

Omg. I just woke up to this. I have to no words.........
Can't even start thinking about the implications for the slam race. This lost slam could have major ramifications when everything is said and done.

In one of his early matches he hit a shot out and when it was returned he hit a line drive off of the back fence. Even my 10 year old commented on his sportsmanship. Novak is his favorite player too. Sucks he was DQ'd, but I would agree it was only a matter of time his temper caught up to him

Rule is not dumb at all, you can't just go out there swinging balls in frustration, endangering people around.

But for the love of god, it was hardly more than a normal swing.

It's just the 1 in 1 million chance it hit the linesperson right in the neck.

Touch someone with a ball at that speed and it would NEVER get you disqualified.

It's just ridiculous because of the added drama with the lineswomen collapsing, otherwise it should not be a DQ, not on a ball like that.
Well, he didn't touch her, the ball did. What's the wording on the rule again .....

This is another reason I'll never pay 1$ to watch tennis anymore.
Intent should count for at least 75% of the judgment. I'm sick of this never-ending softing, pro-vitcim world

Unbelievable.
Why are tennis players smacking balls like that out of play anyway? They are not alone on court?

If that was your mom that he hit, you'd be talking with a lawyer right now to get as much money as you can in the lawsuit! LOL

Nadal is the favourite for RG. Not so much at the other Slams. So Nadal's still got a lot of work to do to break the Slam record.

Based on his record and recent performances, Nadal is realistcally the best player at RG and the US Open. That's two slams (he's the extreme favorite at RG and the slight favorite at the US Open, no matter what oddsmakers claim).

At worst, he is probably third favorite in Australia and Wimbledon. The myth that Nadal has no hope at anywhere other than RG is dumb, and needs to retired. Even if RG got cancelled this year, there's still a great chance of Nadal holding the slam record next year if all slams are played.

It really sucks to see this happen, but I think it had to be done. You just can’t hit a line judge, especially in the throat, hard enough that they have to leave the court. Any other player in this draw would have gotten the DQ, so to hold him to a double standard for the sake of ratings would have been hypocritical.

I’m still in shock... He seemed off/frustrated throughout the match, and it looked like an accident, but he couldn’t stop for a second and hit the ball literally anywhere in the empty stadium around him? If anything, accidents like this make more of a case for Hawkeye live. Just take the linesmen off the court.

It's time for the night train!

I'm interested to hear your views @BeatlesFan . What do you say? Fair call or not? Was it too harsh?
I mean this could alter the whole GOAT history.
My thoughts are that all those who said #18 was in the bag, need to take a step back. No slam is guaranteed and people (including you) ;) awarding Novak the trophy before the tournament even started should learn from this incident. The pandemic should teach us all that we can't accurately predict anything.

Anyway, the rule is explicit and I don't think exceptions should be made for any player, even the #1 player. I'd say the same had Roger been the one doing this.

Seriously. Rafa has played in a combined 10 Wimbledon and Aussie finals. He's been on the wrong end of 3 (07 Wimb, 12 AO, 17 AO) epic finals and was robbed by injury of another AO (14). I'd argue that Rafa's peak AO is better than Roger's peak AO. The 09 Rafa probably beats 12' Djoker in 4 sets.

Just going by the stats, dude. Nadal opted not to play US Open this year. That was his choice. Because he's not confident that he can play at peak level across 2 Slams along with the risk of injury. So he chose to go with RG even despite the coronavirus risk being the same. He'll break the Slam record by winning RG. But I don't think he's going to win the US Open ever again. He'll be 35 when he plays it next year and there are stronger players come to the forefront now.

If Serena had done this, every post in this thread would be about banning her from the sport and stripping her of her titles but because one of the big 3 was responsible, you have people on here actually trying to claim it was too harsh a punishment. Really shows you which users have absolutely no integrity around here.

I disagree. If it was Serena, dq'ing her would be both racist and sexist. Because her skin is not white, and well... she has a daughter. She would be the victim, not the person she hit the ball into.

This is way too harsh.

I saw no anger.

Maybe frustration.

Look at other examples of Nalbandian, Shapalov, and even young Tim Henman, who clearly reacted in anger and took a huge swing and hit someone.

In this case it was barely hit: it's unfortunate it hit the old lady in the throat, but a game penalty would have been enough punishment.

EDIT:

After seeing the whole incident, with the lady instantly falling to, the ground, i have to change my mind.

Compared to what Shapalov, Henman (it was so bad youtube censors it even today) and Nalbandian, it didn't look at all worthy of DQ. But even though the ball wasn't hit very hard, it hit the vulnerable throat spot and the lady was instantly affected.

This once in a lifetime fluke couldn't have happened at a worse moment for Novak, right after he created his association, and it will leave him vulnerable to critics. I hope it doesn't cause it to fold.

It's a bit like accumulated bad Karma for screaming and shouting at the crowd culminating in this payback.

It's as bad as any heartbreak that happened in his career, possibly even it's worst.

What a crazy, crazy year this turns out to be.

is this the first time in grand slam history a top player, much less a defending champion has been knocked out of the tournament because of a disqualification

Djokovic had pain in the neck coming to the USO, now he gives neck pain to a lines woman while departing
It's interesting that the American crew commentating had a round table discussion where they spent 20 minutes talking about how "angry" Djokovic has been the whole tournament, how impatient he's been behind the scenes and just not himself. Pat Shriver went into detail how "snarky" Novak's been before and after matches in the players only area and they told various other little incidents. So Novak wasn't a happy camper at this year's USO.

Two of the next three slams are at RG.....I'd say it's almost certain Nadal at least has 20 by next June and quite possibly 21.

Hopefully Thiem or Medvedev win this slam.

Djokovic will be wondering why he wasn’t only penalised like other players who accidentally hit a ball girl or ball boy. The issue isn’t the letter of the law but the blatant level on inconsistency that only adds to his case of systemic racism “They hate me because I’m Serbian!”

Nadal wasn't gonna beat Stan on that day.

Shapovalov hit the ball about 10x harder than that

I cannot stand Djokovic but this is an absolutel joke.
Yeah. He did. It broke the orbital of the guy's eye socket. If he hit that same shot into this lady's throat, she might be dead.

Rule are rules, don't think the decision would have taken as long for any player.

He is playing with fire the way he does that, not the first time. Some sympathy of course as clearly no intent.

but also WOW, what an exciting tournament we have now!
A lot of people saying "rules are rules" but the actual rules don't call for an immediate DQ if a player hits another person. It's always a judgement call from the chair umpire or tournament officials. Of course in this case the reaction from the lineswoman sealed Novak's fate

Feel kinda weird about this. The rules are the rules but it was obviously an accident - hit a bit hard to be emptying his pockets but not the angry hit I expected when I read what happened. Problem is if you start leaving room to interpret this sort of stuff it's a slippery slop, so the right call was made I think.

He hit a line judge. And an old woman at that.
Other players have been disqualified for hitting lines judges and umpires (Shapo, Nalbandian)
