Thiem has a really good forehand lol. One of the best in the world. Moves really well too.
No, his forehand does not hurt Rafa. Thiem is the one running around everywhere. His backhand is not the problem. Sure it could be more affective, but it is not the difference in dominating Rafa or not. It is a small part of the reason.

When comparing Thiem’s bh to Gasquet, having the Nadal matchup in mind, what strikes me as the big adv Gasquet’s bh has over Thiem’s bh, is his ability to create angles on the ad side esp, which is even better than Wawa f.inst.

if you don’t see how much better Gasquet is on the BH side than Thiem, you need a pair of glasses - or perhaps watch one of his matches. He is, by far, the most solid ohbh from the bh side.

I don't think he would dominate Nadal, but he would probably score a win at Roland Garros against him.

Also, I'm pretty sure "peak Gasquet" is an oxymoron :p

Gasquet's backhand is hugely overrated. Thinking it would give Thiem the W over Nadal is a new high in this area.

Actually, it's hugely underrated. In this forum at least. Like in many other cases, people can't separate a shot from the overall success of a player.

Gasquet's backhand must have been great, because he had a pretty good career with a lousy forehand.

But Thiem's backhand is probably not much worse at all.

Not at all. I think he gave up way too much ground when winding up for the one hander leaving him vulnerable to a shot to his forehand after. And it wasn't a great return weapon, slice wasn't great, taking the ball on the rise wasn't a forte of his diminishing effectiveness of his Backhand DTL, etc. etc. (and please no shot reels, I know he could hit Backhands DTL). I would take the Man's backhand any day of the week, as well as Acasuso or Almagro's.

If I was Federer and someone said, "hey, here's Richard's backhand, we're going to swap yours for his!" I'd choke laughing, until I realized they were serious at which point my laughter would turn to horror

Thiem has a better backhand than Wawrinka and Federer let alone Gasquet. Thiem has the best one-handed backhand of all time.

Dominic can slice with more precission than Wawrinka. And Thiem's backhand has always been far mroe powerful and dangerous than Federer's one.

In sum, Thiem possesses the most complete one-handed backhand.

If we look at the numbers...

...Gasquet may have the best 1HBH statistically, but it wouldn't be enough against Nadal for Thiem since the Spaniard is more solid than he is from the baseline regardless. 3 stars is average for the Top 100, 1 star way below average, 5 star way above average. Seems Thiem needs more cheap points with his serve.

But you are not Federer, obviously.

Yes, it's very underrated here nowadays. Everyone was thrilled with it when he started playing, they liked Wawrinka's too but not as much. That lasted for years, then Richard turned out to be a ladies lovin, coke snorting party animal who is wasting his potentials, while at the same time Stanislas started winning big and the treatments of their backhands switched places. Gasquet of course has a fantastic backhand - cross-court, down the line, power, spin, angles, placement, grass, clay, on the move, a return weapon at least as much as any other one-hander, handling high topspin balls better than most one-handers etc. It's one of the best single handed backhands ever, only people tend to confuse the player's career statistics and what his or her shot can do.

Things you say give you away.
Maybe I want you to think I'm not. It'd be a good cover, after all. You're not expecting something as obvious as "My *cough* I mean Federer's competition was GOAT, ROFLMAO!!!"

Look at the point starting at 0:15, where Gasquet stands his ground against Nadal's heavy TS FH, countering it with heavy TS as well. No other ohbh comes close to this against Nadal on clay.
Thiem's BH only dangerous as he flattens it out, and even if Thiem does manage to rev up the RPMs on the BH side as well, he's not very good at doing so against heavy incoming pace. But Gasquet can.
